Littlem, I would say that if you want to move it that you should get an idea of how far the roots have spread out since you have planted it. When I found these plants I came back again to check out their growing habits, I brushed away debris & dirt & realized that their roots really spread out. I do not know how deep the roots grow, but I am sure that they grow at least 6 or so inches deep (if not more). I would dig out a really big chunk of soil with the plants so that I would not disturb the roots too much. Whitecat, in addition to the cypripedium I think I might give her my Kovachii to see if she can do anything with it. They have really clean water (fed from a spring), clouds regularly roll thru their front yard & they get the cool winters & springs that stimulate them to bloom (the upper 90's do not seem to be cutting it for this plant). I have had mine for a while & all it has done is put up two new growths =0( I tried ice (like I did on my Phrag. Grande) and it did nothing for me. -Ray-

The successful cultivation of CCO requires extensive knowledge on their culture. The key is the root. Here is the method lectured to me by a CCO master. I had success using this method. The so-called "three pots" means you use a big, a medium and a small pots for each plant. Step 1: Choose one large tall Chinese/Japanese Classic orchid pot; one medium (size 3) orchid pot, expend the draining hole to almost the whole bottom; and one egg-sized pottery pot. Step 2: Place the medium pot, upside-down, into the large pot. The draining holes of the two pots are in one line. Then place the small pot, upside-down, onto the draining hole of the medium pot. The diameter of the opening of the small pots should be the same size as the bottom of the medium pot. The height of the small pot is a quarter to a third the height of the medium pot. Use a small piece of window mesh to cover the draining hole of the small pot. Step 3: Dip the newly divided CCO shoot, or newly wild-dug plant, into anti Fungi solution. Let it dry in shade. The roots must look dry on the outside. Gently organize the roots, ride it over the small and medium pots inside the large pot. You MUST NOT break any root, for that may lead to the death of the whole plant. In the end, gently add the CCO special cultivation soil/media (made from carbon, barks, perlites, stones, pottery balls, composed pine needles, etc.) into the large pot. After you finish filling the pot, hold the outer pot with both of your hands, lightly drop it on a wood surface once  to increase the contact surface between orchid roots and media. Then you must cover the soil top with white stones or green moss. This is a must because if any of the leaves of the orchid touches the soil, the whole plant may die of infection. Step 4: If the soil is wet to touch, water in about 5 days. If the soil is dry, water immediately. Use sterilized rain or snow water before the roots heal. Place the plant in to half shade with good air flow for at least a month. Step 5: After that, it is you usually care practice for these CCOs. This is not an easy practice itself. The benefits of this method are: 1. Improved aeration of roots. 2. The empty center serves to cool the roots during summer heat. The roots can be easily killed/rot due to heat. 3. Improve humidity inside the pot; assuming the environment is humid in the first place. Chinese classic orchids are chased after for their simple, and preserved elegance. Their unique style and culture-needs inspired generations of old-school Chinese scholars.

Be very cautious about buying a "Hong Kong Orchid" from a nursery when it is not flowering. The true Hong Kong Orchid is B Blakeana and is sterile. We bought a "Hong Kong Orchid" about 12 ft tall with a 2" trunk for $600 only to find out it was a B purpurea. We rescued four volunteers from the seeds, then asked for our money back from the nursery. After much back and forth, with the nursery claiming that even Hong Kong Orchids have seeds, we got our money back. When we told the nursery to take out the false Hong Kong Orchid, they cut it down instead. Our volunteers are now 12 ft tall with 2" trunks, grown from seed in 3 yr. We are now growing others from the seeds of these volunteers. Our neighbor, who lives on the water, has a 30 ft tall by 30 ft around B purpurea that is 25 yr old. Our Miani daughter's tree is the same size and age. Bauhinias can be ravaged by high winds and freezing temps, but they come back.

Xtal, I really don't know about that. They are in separate corners of the yard. They are both in full sun so I don't think that the lack of sun would be a factor in one not blooming. The one that does bloom is not consistent each year. Some years it will have lots of blooms and then other times, none at all. It like a lottery for us, lol. We're thrilled when it does bloom. Joey, thanks for the ID. We never knew the name so we're happy about that. Roselee, We do protect the base... somewhat. We have four pecan trees so we have tons of leaves each fall. We pile the leaves high around the root area. On really frigid nights we'll throw old blankets and a layer of plastic around the base. Since it is right next to my Gardenia, it gets covered anyway because I protect that, too. We remove the blankets when the temps rise above freezing. I suspect that some winter, we could lose it entirely. During the Spring, it always a guessing game to see if it comes back. The other tree is right next to our shed so it is somewhat protected but it gets the leaf mulch, too.
