How long before I actually get a shrub? (1 pic)

Hi all,

I want Allux Symphony, a rose that Austin does not sell any longer. I saw it at Descanso and it was perfect, enchanting, gorgeous, and exactly the right pale, pale yellow for a spot in my garden.

The only place that seems to sell it is Vintage, and you have to order it and they have to make it from scratch for you. Ugh. If I ordered two or three of them now, how long would it be before I have a decent sized set of shrubs in my garden? I'm getting old and don't have any springs to waste, you know? I looked at other pale yellow roses, but they are gold, buttery, or don't have the bajillion petals that I love so much.

It will take about an year to get a band size own root plant that can be mailed. However, Vintage takes 1.5 to 2 years before they mail it. After planting that one, it will take anywhere from 2 to 3 years for it to mature.

I am sure you will have many more springs to enjoy roses and your family.

I think it is best to keep a plumeria in the pot for a year to build up a good root system and to get the plant through the first winter as frost is deadly on young plants.However, you can plant as soon as you have a decent set of six inch leaves. I am in Costa Mesa with less heat and a few frost days too. I have about 30 in the ground but most were planted half a decade ago as two year olds.

What types of evergreens? If they are close to the neighbors side, are they ok with that? Some evergreens shed their needles and can be messy. Some grow quickly, some grow very slow, most grow in width as well as up and will quickly spread into the space there...and most are likely to give a lot of shade, meaning that you will be limited on what you can plant around them if there is not much sun. Pachysandra is a nice ground cover, very low maintainence and stays green all year. But, it does spread fast. I wouldn't put any ground cover if you have any desire to grow flower there at any point. If it were me, I would put up a hedge type shrub to act as a fence along the neighbors side, look for one that is pretty tame and grows fast - then you won't have to look at that boat. Gotta love people who park boats in their yard. We have neighbors with a boat the size of Rhode Island in their back yard. They got it cheap after Hurricane Katrina, took a flat bed truck and a crane to get it up here to the northeast, they put it in the yard, and there it has sat for the last several years - they worked on it for one summer and then just forgot about it, not even bothering to cover it in the winter...slowly it is turning into the world's largest birdhouse and the neighborhood's biggest eyesore...but what the heck. I digress... Anyway, hedges. Yes. And then something pretty and fast growing, centered in that space there. Like a Bradford Pear or a Wheeping Cherry. Plant pachysandra around it, or make a nice little flower bed with decorative rocks or whatever your husband wants. That's what I would do! Good luck!

Thanks for sharing more pictures. When we were first married, we started buying vintage mcm furniture because it was cheaper than most new furniture of decent quality. But, now that mcm is hot, we are being priced out of our comfort zone. Of course, I also capitalized on this trend by selling some things. We still miss our 8 Saarenin tulip chairs, 2 captains and 6 side chairs in fantastic condition. Anyway, love seeing it all in a fitting setting. Couple of questions: Can you tell me about your paneling. Can you tell me about the wood, plank width, and red tiled floors. What is your ceiling height? Thanks! Btw we now live in a 1954 mcm ranch with a 1976 kitchen. We have the same florecent ceiling fixture that you had. Our wall paneling wasn't painted, but the paneled ceiling was!

I know it exists but I never understood the big fuss with them because I myself have never seen them growing in naturalized areas and I’m outside all the time. I only saw one tiny seedling under a callery pear and that’s my only experience seeing them as nonplanted euonymus alatus. Maybe this happens in more warmer winter areas like where you are dbarron? Idk. Same with E. Japonicus and fortunei. Here they are highly valued ornamentals. Never seen seedlings of them either. Although the wintercreeper tends to get out of control. I know that for tree cuttings the older the parent plant is the harder to root. This doesn’t apply to shrubs?

AMaji, thank you for the information. By the time those roses start blooming, I will have changed my garden design three times. I think I had better start looking for a different pale pale yellow rose. Sigh.

Renee I have Charles Darwin own-root and its soft yellow color fading to cream looks perfect with old rose colors. I have it in a bed with lavender pink and lavender to purple roses and it blends in beautifully. It's fragrant, with large blooms that have innumerable petals. Another old rose lover bought hers after seeing mine.

'Allux Symphony' is good but there are others. 'Charles Darwin', or 'Molineux' is a little brighter yellow but it is a very rust-resistant bloom machine.

Thank you, all! I have so much bright yellow already, I wanted something very pale. I got two bands of Symphony from Heirloom, and if that doesn't pan out, I'll get Charles or Molineux at Otto and Sons.

Just wanted to put my two cents in. I have Symphony and here, in my garden, there is nothing that competes with it. It is the perfect rose for me--light green matte foliage with no disease, perfect clusters of light yellow roses that take the heat, lots of rebloom. I know nothing of Allux Symphony, though. Is it different than Symphony?

I had Charles Darwin here and for me, it sprawled in the dirt and had very bad color in the heat. It is gone. I also had Molineux. It had lots of fast-blowing blooms that took wonderful photos but were small and fleeting. I ditched it last winter after much consideration as some folks raved about it. I had it long enough to know it didn't warrant a prime spot in my garden.
On the other hand, Symphony will always be with me. It is worth the wait.

Oooooh. That's it. Thank you for the information, Kathy. Allux Symphony is the same rose as Symphony. That is exactly, perfectly right.

I can't wait until those itty bitty roses get here! I ripped out the barrel cactus and the aloe today, and the irises are getting ripped out tomorrow to make room.

I'm going to put the two of them in an open triangle with an orchid iris that blooms at the same time as the first flush, with lamb's ears in front. Just like in the Descanso photo- and the iris is the same color as that cool pink/orchid rose in the background of the photo. With orchid foxgloves behind them. And yellow columbines!
