What bad things has one of your pets taught the other?

Hi all - I've been lurking for a bit, but thougtht this would be a fun question.

Mine is this. I have two cats, Big Bosco and Little Minnie. Both are rescued cats, so who knows their history. I also have a cat flap which they both enjoy using.

Anyway, Bosco used to be terrified of water. Would come inside at the slightest inkling of rain. Absolutely hated water. Then I get Little Minnie. Well Minnie doesn't mind drizzle. What's a little water? No big deal. She taught Bosco that rain doesn't hurt. So now he stays outside when it's drizzling. Comes in with a damp coat and doesn't really mind. I dry him off with a paper towel or tissue and pamper him as he's a bit of a loner. Now, my macho macho cat comes running into the room, meowing (rare for him) to get dried off.

It's just such a funny thing that one cat taught another that getting wet is no big deal.

p.s. - The worst is when they jump into the clumping litter while wet.

My dog, Kirby has taught my friends dog, Cujo, to throw himself on the ground and wiggle around in utter bliss...it is very cute.

What my dogs have taught each other:
it is easy to jump over a 4 ft fence
it is pretty easy to dig under, too.
If that fails, it is not too much trouble to spread the wires and squeeze through
Always check the counters for food. If you can't see all the way to the back, jump up and walk there.
We are much faster than people.
When you stand on top of a police car, they can't reach over and grab you.
Chickens make good eating.
Even if you don't eat them, they are fun to chase around.
Chickens break easily.
Grab the sunny spots before someone else does.

Lass, of course, I'm not recommending leaving roses in band pots for extended periods, but I must tell you about Etoile de Mai, a tiny band I bought from Ashdown last September. Due to one thing and another it stayed in the band on my patio, in the enclosed porch during the freezes and back on the patio getting water catch as catch can and getting smaller (it was minute when it arrived!) and smaller until it became one "cane" about 2" long. I thought sure I was killing this rose that I really wanted (and paid good money for). In early April when I dug my new Niles Cochet bed I planted it. Etoile de Mai is growing and has buds on it. What can I say? They're tough. But I did lose a mini this way but it didn't last anywhere near as long as EdM under similar abuse. Sherry

A love of languages. Just because you are good at something doesn't mean you have to WIN all the time, you still want to have fun playing the game. This is a hard lesson. There are things I could do blindfolded (playing pool, mini golf, euchre and so on) so the game became boring to me. But I never learned how to play for FUN. Now I am not saying that I am a poor loser........I just sometimes have trouble having FUN playing things. Observe. If you want to know about a person, look at their shoes. Pay attention to how they treat animals and "service" people, their parents, and their siblings. Dances.

Joyful, I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt and hope you were just kidding with that post about yelling at an employee. *Totally* off base! You've been listening to that stupid mantra "the customer is always right" just a little too long methinks. If you were serious, then let's have us a discussion cuz you just hit on a pet peeve of mine! LOL I'm proud to say I've intervened on more than one occasion when someone has been screaming at an employee who is not responsible for the problem. I've also gone to bat for employees put in that position. And I've also had my share of people taking their hostilities out on me because they can't balance a checkbook, read a sign or a variety of other excuses for the problem. When the employee does something wrong, they should be held accountable but that should be by their employer. Although your purchases contribute to paying their wages, you are not their employer and reprimanding them isn't your privilege. You made an excellent point: Complaining only really helps if you do it in places where it can have some effect. Well said. Or better yet, how about people taking some personal responsibility? Go ahead and return it if you want. Good suggestion. That's not a problem. But why in the world would you keep buying it then if it's so bad? I've said (essentially) this in another thread tonight but bears repeating here: If you don't buy it, they won't sell it, get it? If you buy it over and over, you're telling them you like it. Basic rules of retail. Dollars are data and communicate well. And BTW, I'll lay you odds if you ask the cashier nicely to open it for you, most (if not all) of the time I'm sure they will. Most will have a box cutter on them or near them or have the dexterity to pop it open. And for that matter you can stand there and yell too - they'll probably still open it for you! And have a good laugh in the breakroom telling the others about you! :D I don't like a lot of these packages, but I'm pragmatic. There IS a reason for them.

I am so loving all the dog and cat stories. It is apparent that our animals enrich our lives in many ways. Here is another story about another Granddog. My younger daughter had 2 Beagles. While visiting at her house for a weekend some years ago, I stayed with the Beagles while Daughter went to a Doctors appointment. The dogs normal supper time is 4:00 she had told me, but Molly the oldest would try to tell me at about 3:30 that it is time to eat. Don't fall for her lies and just ignore her till it is 4 o'clock, she said. Sure enough about 3:30 Molly appeared in front of me as I was reading in a comfy chair. She did a little wiggle dance and then went to her empty bowl. I continued to read without looking up. Then Molly came back and did the wiggle dance and added 2 fast spinning circles for emphasis and then back to her empty bowl again. I continued reading. Molly then came back, repeated all the other moves and next grabbed my pant leg and shook my leg briskly. Now I burst out laughing. I couldn't ignore her any longer

My parrot Zack is quite talkative in the evening. Well, actually he screams, which is part of the species natural behavior so I can't really complain. However, I DO resent both of my huskies responding!

Little Dill showed little Puja how to climb into big Sofie's hammock bed on the windowsill. Now Sofie has no place to herself.

My past dogs. Murphy was very happy to play with the empty toilet paper roll. Rip into small pieces and I would clean it up.

Then Buddy dog came along, "Did you know you can eat this?" So I'd cut the roll in half for each to eat.

Getting a whack doesn't hurt at all if you just gobbled down counter food! - I knew a Tomcat with this attitude.

meghane - Sounds like a boisterous house!

elly_nj - I think you need to get a hammock per cat. I am one of those crazy cat lovers who has umpty-ump beds all over the house. I want my babies to know that everything can be softer than they ever imagined. When the foster lady brought Bosco over she said in amazement - He has never experienced anything like this.

Uh oh. It's raining. I better go home in case Bosco needs to be dried off.

Our collie taught the English mastiff to lie. She would jump up and bark like mad, as though there were something terrible at the door, so they'd all jump up and go see. There would be nothing there, and while they were gone the collie would steal their toys and treats.

English mastiffs are smart enough that they only fell for this trick once. Then the lead male mastiff tried pulling the same trick on us -- as chief guard dog, if he barks a deep, alarm bark, we always come see what it is and he shows us the threat/problem. He decided it would be a good idea to alarm bark when he was bored or wanted attention. Sure enough, we'd come right away and open the outside door to see what was going on...out he'd run and invite us to play.

To break him of this habit we doubled the obedience training he was getting and started him on tracking (so he got more attention and more interesting work to do) and my husband took the dog everywhere he went. Fixed the problem, but we still laugh whenever we remember how Gwen the collie taught Sebastian the mastiff to lie...

This is a case of a new cat teaching an old cat tricks LOL.

I had a 17 year old cat that used to bath herself like all cats - lick the paw, pass the paw over the face or ears, repeat.

Then we got a new kitten, that after a while - being a lazy butt - discovered that she could lie on her back, lay her front leg along the ground, lick it, then rub her head on it. No need to even sit up to bathe! It wasn't long before the older cat was doing the same thing ROFL.
