Thanks for the considered opinions. I know it is hard so "see" with photos and PhotoShopped at that. But your responses have highlighted our quandary. House main is 30' 6" x 24' 6" with 12 x 12 ell off the back. We have removed the 7 ft. ceiling and vaulted it to 8 1/2 ft. It is the 7' 2" (inside measure) of exterior walls and 4 1/2 pitch roof that make it look like a munchkin house. (Hubby really, really doesn't want to raise the roof and extend the chimney now that attic insulation is maxed out.) But everyone walks inside and is surprised. Right now the south wall is almost all glass (Photoshop makes it look like forest but really surrounded by 12 acres of pasture & stone walls) (Picture is of east) and therein is the rub: do we remove glass and make it look & feel more proportionate outside -- more like a munchkin house? or do we try to increase the glass on the east? Right now the glass in the house is a very modern horizontal slider. We want to orient the windows to vertical but... Small windows are 2' 1 3/8" x 4' 1" (frame size) Large windows are 2' 5 3/8" x 4' 5" -- 2' 1" off the floor To increase east wall left-hand-side glass I have considered triple window but the windows only go down to 1' 9" wide so with a proportionate triple it might look like overkill: 1 - 1 1/2 - 1. Picture window doesn't open. Shutters would be real, working with shutter dogs, etc. But, mjtx2, you might be right (and so, too, my Hubby) that all that fussy-ness will look ridiculous on our mongrel. Door is off center by one foot and entry is standard 3' so left side is about 14' 5". With two large windows with 4" trim (5' 6 6/8") that would leave a skosh less than 2 1/4 ' surround for equidistant windows-- I think. Renovator8: Main is only 3 rooms (living/kitchen, bed, bath) and ell is mudroom/laundry so we are good for Mass codes.

A Queen bed is only 5-0 wide and 6-6 long so there should not be any trouble getting it into any room with a 32 inch door from a 36 inch or wider corridor if you carry it vertically. A king is even easier since the base can be made of two twin beds each 39" wide. I can see no reason for a 36 inch door. Wheelchair access would require all doors to be 32" wide. bevangel has the right idea about the closet door. If it is moved into the short entry hall, the bed can be centered on the long closet wall. Alternatively, the closet could be narrowed 6 inches and/or the bathroom door moved against the linen closet so the bed could be placed against the bathroom wall. Decks that narrow can be difficult to furnish and use especially if the door is at one end. I would center a single or pair of French doors or a French slider on the deck and create some corner space for furniture. A pair of windows on the other outside wall might work depending on what is out there to see. The walls should be at least 4 1/2 inches thick and thicker if you want good sound separation between bedrooms. I see no reason to not swing a door against the linen closet in the bathroom. Pocket doors are only slightly more awkward in normal use than narrow paired doors. The entrance hall could be on either side of the room depending on the client's preference regarding the hall travel distance/distance between bedroom doors vs the distance from the bed to the toilet (a major concern of many clients over 60, and yes, 5 feet does make a difference). Some would insist on the bed against the bathroom wall with the toilet on the other side of the wall. To design a custom house you need to have a frank private conversation with the owners.

Thanks so much for all your comments -- and for not going "yech" when you saw my tone-on-tone shutters. I can always paint them again later, but sure don't feel like doing it now. Enailes, the pathway, which will widen to 10 by 10 at one spot to accommodate facing benches -- will be a stamped concrete in a coquina (light creamy tan color) banded in a taupey brick shade a bit darker than the shutters. The benches (Ellsworth on benches.com) have been painted to match the shutters. I like them. Amysrq, the plants you mention sound interesting and I will pass them along to our wonderful landscape architect. Thanks. Caroleah -- no offense taken on the roof suggestion. Yes, we're planning on cleaning it -- just trying to find something that will not damage the roof like pressure washing can. Next week the digging up of the old walkway and some plants will begin.
