Sirius radio has a whole station devoted to those old shows, including the old commercials. It sure brings back memories! I like the commercials almost better than the shows!!

Used to listen to The Shadow in the car, after we spent the day shopping in the "big" city and driving back home.

Paul Harvey I loved daily!

If you google "Old Time Radio", you will come upon two sites that have a large number of audio recordings of many of the shows you mention and lots of others.

The first is the Old Time Radio section at archive.org (the Internet Archive)

The second website is otr.net.

(I was born after the radio show age. My experience with watching old TV shows from my childhood years is that my memories make them much better than they actually seem to have been. But maybe your experience will be different with the old radio shows.)

I'll have to look that up on my sirius radio. I remember "Mr Keene, tracer of lost persons" and "The Shadow". Loved them. How quaint it all seems.

I remember Mama, Luigi Bosco, Life of Riley

I grew up on radio.. Our local college sponsers an hour of old radio each night and three hours on Sat.

I remember a lot of the old radio shows. I preferred the mysteries such as The Shadow (in much the same way as I prefer mysteries on TV - I guess the same type of programming appeals to me). I liked to listen to The Shadow and other radio mysteries in a totally dark room so that I could concentrate just on the voices. Same with audio books - of course the narrator's voice is important - no matter how much I might like the story if I don't care for the narrator I won't listen to it. There certainly is not a lot for me to watch on TV these days since I really only like dramas/mysteries.

How about Old Widder Brown

I remember Let's Pretend from years and years ago, in fact, sometimes I will break into song - "Cream of Wheat, it's so good to eat, yes we have it every day. It makes us strong and we sing this song, and it makes us shout hooray. It's good for growing children and grownups too to eat, for all the family's ????? you can't beat Cream of Wheat." Of course people look at me like I'm crazy. Wonder just how many times I listened to this program to be able to memorize the song.

The afternoon soaps didn't impress me as much as the after-school and early evening shows. I've loved The Green Hornet.

One that came on on Saturday night that appealed to my music sense was The Chicago Theater of the Air where they would play operettas, which I loved. My mother said I could listen as long I had my bath and was in bed. At intermission time there was always a very, very boring talk, in a monotone, by Col. Robert R. McCormick that always managed to put me to sleep, so I never got to hear the end of the operatta.

I also loved I Remember Mama, on Sunday afternoon.

Well, SheliaJoice, your list covers about all of my old time favorites. During the 1940s, my family listened to the Green Hornet, Amos and Andy, Fibber McGee and Molly, and the Grand Ole Opera.

After school, my sister and I listened to serials. These were based on comic book characters and each occupied a 15 minute spot. Four serials filled an hour. Of course, the shows shared time with ads - Remember Ovaltine, Quaker Oats, and GrapeNuts? Typically, the story line left the hero in a clift hanger or a mess and you had to tune in tomorrow to find out if he/she survived and how they escaped. Favorites were Sky King, Super Man, Gene Autry, Plastic Man, Mandrake, etc.

I remember listening to :
Howdy Doody show
The Shadow

only the shadow knows! every sunday on the way home form my "aunt"s we'd listen..and I'm pretty sure mother listen to a soap opera, Crisco was one of the ads?

My son recorded some of the old time radio shows on an MP3 player for me.

I loved many of the shows that you mention ... and did someone mention Fred Allen, with his Allen's Alley and all of the characters thereon?

His and Bob Hope's humour were somewhat sharper, and on occasion somewhat more risqué, that was Fibber McGee and Molly or Jack Benny and Mary Livingstone.

With radio ... you paint your own pictures (says this addict of our national radio system).

We didn't get TV through western Canada till the early 50s. Once just before that a group of us Univ. students were travelling from Saskatoon through Christmas en route to a post-Christmas Christian/missionary/world concerns conference in Kansas when the bus made a late-evening stop at a roadhouse somewhere in n. Minnesota. There was some discussion of whether anyone would get off to stretch legs, but closeted and more or less comfortable under our coats as we were, no one seemed much interested ...

... but when someone went into the bar and came back to announce at the door of the bus that "They have TV!" ...

... you should have seen the (wingless) coats fly!

ole joyful

I think Jim Jordan and his wife wrote and acted in "Fibber McGee & Molly". They lived in apartment building in Park Ridge, IL, along with some friends of our family. I can't remember the name of the little girl who would annoy characters by asking, "Whatcha doin', Mister?"

Do you remember Tom Mix and his sponsor, Hot Ralston? (Hum "When It's Round-up Time in Texas" to recall the cereal ditty.)

Remember the groaning organ music that accompanied the Soaps?

We had a Victrola. I listened to many a program curled up against the speakers. I also heard my first musical on its' record player -- 78's of "Oklahoma!"

Sheilajoyce, I went on the Sirius website and it looks like they don't have that channel anymore. Bummer!

Old thread but by way of update: archive.org has recently reorganized its site and has thousands of shows that you can either download in zipped form or stream online. It's quite easy to download 100 Sherlock Holmes episodes in a few minutes, for example. Enjoy.

I remember listening to One Mans Family and when it was over I would call my grandma and we would talk about the show. I think it was only on for 15 minutes at a time. Also Fibber Mcgee and Molly. Was also a favorite. I'm sure there were many more that we enjoyed.
