Canon Powershot SX20 IS?? SX1 IS? Can't decide!!

I have decided I want/need a better digital camera. I want a camera that will let me learn how to take photographs, as well as just snapshots. I am not ready for a DSLR but really do want a camera that takes great shots, indoors and out. Anyone here have the SX20 IS? Or should I spend a bit more and get the SX1 IS (which shoots in RAW or jpg)? I can't believe I am having such a hard time with this decision! Thanks for any advise you can offer on the canons I am considering....or any others that I should be considering!

IMO...best buy for your $.
You can't go wrong with either one, ...I love canon's because they are ruged build cameras, my wife has the powershot SX10, think the SX1 has HD video, I got my new 7D,.. we took some pictures, she beat me about on every picture....guess has to do allot who stands behind it.

Thanks for the reply! I went ahead and ordered the SX20 on monday and it arrived yesterday evening. The SX1 does have HD video and it shoots in RAW, but at this point I don't think I need to bother with RAW....at least not enough to pay an extra $150 for it. And there are hack programs for these cameras that make them shoot in RAW anyway....my daughter has one on her S3 and it works great. Anyway, I love the feel of it. It's large enough to feel very comfortable in my hands (unlike my casio which is the size of a deck of cards). The function screens are well laid out and easy to navigate. The only think I see so far I don't like about it is there is no tether on the lens cap. The pics I took inside look really good. I have not downloaded any of them yet, but hope to later on. So far though, I am impressed! I think I'll go to the zoo and botanical gardens tomorrow and play around with it.

I would rule out the one without the viewfinder. The area doesn't match well on our G10, but still a good option in bright sunlight no matter how good the LCD!!! LuminousLandscape.com is another good place for reviews. If it's too technical, don't worry, skim it and get to the conclusion Canon has a nice trade-in policy. When our G3 lens wouldn't pop out anymore, they offered a G10 for not that much more money than the repair. It didn't make sense not to as the G3 was too long in the tooth - worst part was it couldn't focus fast enough even on a slow moving pet. Just dropped it and the LCD is kaput. I'm wondering if I could upgrade to the new G12 when I send it in....

BTW I forgot to thank you for the tip on the camera. I have decided to get the Nik D80 I was going to get the 40 but agree this is the better buy for me. I did post a question on online buying. Have you had any experience? I went to Nikon and they suggested BestBuy and a few other Stores. One some of the photo mags I get there are some very good kit deals and that is one of the suggestions to buy because one can usually-?- get the best deal with. I ahve one pick out, right now I can't remember the website or store listed but Popular Photography has a big page listing this place along with several others as safe. If not we are to contact Pop Photo..so time will tell.. Thanks again!

I just went outside and made a little video, for some reason I was surprised that it had sound. LOL! You can hear the birds chirping! Cool. The pictures are ok, some were blurry. I haven't figured out how to use the zoom function yet. Test picture: I can see more detail in the up close pictures with this camera than my Kodak...oh, and yes, I meant Canon not Kodak, which is my old camera. It took videos too but I never used it for that. I gave that camera to Alex today. Thanks Iowagirl, I'll go back and print a copy of it to take with me...otherwise I will be lost when I actually go to do it. Thanks Glenda, I'll go check it out.

Some important things to consider when buying a point and shoot digital camera: 1) Get one with an IS if possible, 2) With a viewfinder. Many recent models took out the viewfinder to make place for a larger LCD display. The LCD display is not a big help to view when you're outdoor in bright light condition. 3) One that uses AA or AAA batteries. Rechargeable batteries of this type are easier to find but recharging can be a bothersome when you travel outside the US. However, AA and AAA are sold just about anywhere in the world, a great convenience. Which means... any of the Canon Powershot from model A590 IS and up are good buys. I just recommended to my boss the Powershot A590 IS. He wants to spend around $150 and at BuyDig.com, the price is around $145, no shipping, no tax and with US warranty. Watch out for gray market price = import and did not meet US standard; thus, have no US warranty.

Agree with Raw file, for the average guy you don't need it, my wife attached a string to the cap.

I also have the SX10 and really like it. So far, I've dropped the cap about 10 times, I think. My Sony cap was tethered, so I pull this one off and just let go. GRRRR.
