Who Is Cooked Out By The Holidays?

I think I am. We have our traditional New Years' Eve get-together tomorrow and normally I'd want to make all kinds of stuff. But not this time.

I feel like letting SWMBO provide some dips, store-bought stuff, her (awesome) holiday candy, and call it good.

But, another part of me thinks I really should make something, rather than be a slug.

I could make some shao mai. That is easy enough. There is this braised cubes of pork belly dish I could try. Maybe crank out some tempura chicken at the appropriate point in the evening. Maybe some sushi rolls. Spicy buffalo wings?

Guess the idea of cooking is getting more interesting as I think about it. But usually I don't have to talk myself into cooking. Yes, I am definitely kind of cooked out.

For us, New Year is just the 2 of us and I'm all cooked out! We're having a feast of shellfish that doesn't need anything but lemon juice and mayonnaise! Oysters, crab, prawns etc. I can relax and enjoy myself.

Yes, cooked out but not yet burned out lol! Sadly I still have a ton of money in my fridge because of a few stops at places like Trader Joe's and Ring Brother's Market where the tempting, expensive party foods are found. Salmon pate, pork terrine, cheeses from 7 different countries, salamis, crackers and flatbreads, nuts, olives, dried fruits, Stollen and (gasp) fruitcake. Not to mention the booze.

So instead of cooking, I'm going to start putting out a smorgasabord and we can eat our way through the fat, salt, sugar and alcohol right into the New Year!!

Lori, those look yummy! Artichoke Heart And Red Pepper Bites ==================================== From Perfect Entertaining website. These simple appetizers are something that we always have on hand for surprise guests. They freeze extremely well, are very easy to make, and are always popular. They go together very well with the rest of this festive menu and require no preparation time at all on a very busy day. Simply defrost and eat! Makes 60 bites 6 ounces marinated artichoke hearts in oil 6 ounces roasted bell peppers 1 small chopped onion 2 minced cloves garlic 4 eggs 2 cups shredded Cheddar cheese 1/4 cup dry bread crumbs 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley Dash hot pepper sauce Freshly ground black pepper Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and grease an 8 inch baking dish. Drain the artichoke hearts, reserving 2 tablespoons of the oil. Drain the roasted peppers and discard the liquid. Finely chop the artichoke hearts and peppers and set aside. Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add the reserved oil, onion, and garlic. Cook for five minutes, or until soft and translucent. Remove from the heat and cool slightly. Beat the eggs in a large bowl until thick and lemon colored. Beat in the remaining ingredients along with the artichoke hearts, peppers, and onion mixture. Pour into the prepared pan. Bake for 30 minutes, or until pale golden brown. Cool for 15 minutes, then cut into one inch squares. Tightly wrap and refrigerate for up to 2 days, or freeze for up to a month. Serve cold, at room temperature, or gently reheated in a 300 degree oven for 5-10 minutes.

I know this probably means nothing to those of you outside of Dallas, but a local NPR station, KERA, had a gentleman on, Glenn Mitchell, that had the most complete collection of Christmas songs and stories that was possible to have. He did a yearly Christmas Blockbuster for years. It was the best listening you could imagine for Christmas music. Eclectic doesn't even come close to describe it. He usually broadcast for 12 hours straight, within a week or two of Christmas. It was a family tradition to listen to as much of his Christmas Blockbuster we could. He also hosted a talk show, and did some reporting for NPR, but that Christmas Blockbuster was nothing short of amazing. Well, sadly, Glenn Mitchell passed away unexpectedly in 2005, but KERA kept up the tradition, and has broadcast a condensed version of his Christmas blockbuster ever since he passed away. We listened to it last night as we prepared our Christmas Eve dinner, and thought kind thoughts about him, remembering him fondly. I know this means little to those that weren't exposed to Glenn MItchell, but he was a very loved Dallas person, and even made a lover of Christmas music out of DH, who hates Christmas music otherwise. Colleen, your meal sounds amazing. Your cooking always does! I was invited to have dinner with long time friends (30 years) as my children did not come home for Christmas. I brought dolmas as a late afternoon snack which we ate with an assortment of cheeses, pate, and crackers while we sampled assorted wines and other libations throughout our lazy day. I acted as sous chef and did a lot of chopping and sauteing to earn my place at the table. My friends made a wonderful bread-less dressing made of dried fruit soaked in brandy, apples, onions, and cranberries. I await the recipe. There were brussels sprouts with pancetta and a couple of cranberry sauces. And turkey. Dessert was this wonderfully moist gingerbread from Nigella Lawson. Fresh Gingerbread with Lemon Icing Epicurious : November 2003 by Nigella Lawson How to Be a Domestic Goddess Yield: Makes 20 squares For the gingerbread: 1/2 cup plus 2 tablespoons unsalted butter 1/2 cup plus 2 tablespoons brown sugar 3/4 cup plus 1 tablespoon light corn syrup 3/4 cup plus 1 tablespoon molasses 2 teaspoons fresh ginger, finely grated 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1 cup plus 2 tablespoons milk 2 large eggs, beaten to mix 1 teaspoon baking soda, dissolved in 2 tablespoons warm water 2 cups all-purpose flour roasting pan, approximately 12 x 8 x 2 inches, greased and lined with foil or parchment paper For the icing: 1 tablespoons lemon juice 1/2 cup plus 2 tablespoons confectioners' sugar, sifted 1 tablespoon warm water Preheat the oven to 325 F. Elery smoked lamb for Easter too, but no one would eat it except him and the dog, LOL. That looks like zucchini wedges with the smoked lamb? I'd eat those. Oh, and the jelly beans too, love those darned things. I tried those eggs with the leaves one year, ala Martha Stewart. Alas, Martha Stewart does not live here, so I wasted my time and leaves and got the ugliest eggs ever! Yours actually look like they are supposed to, LOL. Annie

I am totally cooked out, and baked out too. :o)
Tonight it's just going to be hubby and me, so I am only making crab rangoon tarts and panko-crusted, oven-baked chicken fingers with a honey-mustard dipping sauce. I usually make the phyllo cups for the rangoon tarts myself, but this time I bough pre-made tiny cups. For dessert, I am baking chocolate-dipped marzipan crescents. Fast and easy. Tomorrow, fresh black eyed peas with sausage and rice, also quick to cook. And starting Sunday, lots of green salads. :o)

seagras, that's usually our New Year's eve tradition, the leftovers with a couple of things added. This year, I decided, and the little one agreed, we'd eat everything that was in the fridge or freezer beginning in November, before buying anything new. After the big birthday brunch bash on Christmas morning, my fridge was empty! I'd taken everything to my sister's house for Christmas Eve and my mom's house for the Christmas brunch. I was able to clean the shelves. I still haven't restocked. Nothing is left. Clean slate. That's what I like to think of right now as, instead of burned out. I have to be creative with what's left, like say, extra hashbrowns. Delmonico potatoes? What can I say? I can't afford to throw anything out, so I have to be creative. I'm betting it'll be Greek, whatever I buy when I am finally fully inspired to spend money.

I don't feel cooked out, but I am very tired of sugary sweets... UGH.. Hubby brought me a small dish of ice cream last night while we were sitting around and the dogs ate most of it... I am just tired of sweets... We have lots of wonderful sweet breads, pies, cupcakes, cakes, muffins and candies that Bob can indulge in. He is such a bony butt anyway, so he can handle it.

But I love to cook, so I don't think I ever tire of it..

Okay, one last cooking push and then its steamed veg and salad for . . . well, a week at least.

Hors d'oeuvres

Artichoke dip and tortilla strips
Brie wedge and water crackers
Tempura veggies and shrimp
Braised pork belly, cubed with sauce and handy toothpicks
Steamed and roasted duck wings
Shrimp cocktail, the classic type
Pork and shrimp shao mai
Pork heart - impulse buy, haven't decided how to prepare

LOL John!

Another who is totally cooked out! Last night was an easy meal , veal parm and pasta puttanesca with a Caesar salad, thankfully it was just the two of us! Today I'll deal with some leftover turkey and that pretty much cleans out the fridge.

One problem.... a whole bunch of cheese that didn't get eaten so I'll probably be searching out recipes to use it up and end up cooking all week.....: (

Me! I am cooked out - food shopping out - menu planning out- clean-up out - not necessarily in that order. I am tired and need to get back to normal.
My little dachshund had 14 teeth removed in OCT - I have been cooking for her also --she is eating mushed gourmet.
I may never get her back on 'dog food'.
She is healthier than ever, looks and acts better (not better behaved/ less stubborn - she is a dachshund after all) and I am feeling very cooked out~LOL~ what we do for our pooches!

I'm pretty cooked out myself. Looking forward to homemade soups again.

I didn't have to do any cooking at Christmas.
Ate at my DD's and didn't stop til I left Sunday.

I just hit the Lottery tonight( 3 number ), so I'll have to sacrifice and eat at a Restaurant tommorrow.
