Help with Kitchen Paint

Hello everyone - it's been awhile since I've posted here. I am itching to repaint my kitchen, after all it's been over a year!! ; ) It's currently SW Whole Wheat. I like the color but it's getting a little dull and old for me. The walls under the windows are also showing all kinds of dirt that has been hard to keep up with. I love red and have been looking at Bangkok Rust and BM Spanish Red. I know green goes well with oak cabinets and the wood trim and crown molding I just think the red would go better in my house. I have BM Mountain Moss in the office and Mediterranean Olive over the fireplace, BM Dry Sage would be the most obvious for the kitchen I just think it's a little dreary and drab in the kitchen. I have thought of Olive Branch also but again, kind of dreary. I LOVE warm colors in the house. I painted the island green a few months ago. It can be repainted - no big deal. I was thinking Antique White with a brown glaze if I paint the kitchen red or maybe black if I paint it green. Any thoughts on this? The 2 swatches in the photos are BM Spanish Red and Laura Ashley Olive 4. Thanks!

Sorry, I am liking the gold a lot more than the red or green. Maybe you need a more intense gold color. Just a thought.

Three thoughts: I have a color almost identical to Olive Branch in my bedroom right now, and have the same color of wood in my bedroom as in your kitchen, and the two colors look wonderful together. My bedroom is one of my fave rooms in my whole house! Having said that...

Another thought: I'm a red-lover, too. I think a red (darker red than your swatch) woud like nice, too. But then, you'd need to repaint your island. I would repaint it with an antique black look.

One last thought (and my favorite)-- what about a warm, rich gray shade?? It would look really complement and tie in your beautiful stonework (I can see it in your first picture). I think THAT would look stunning! I'm like you, I love warm colors in my house, but I think gray can actually bring much warmth if it's the right shade. You could accent with red and it would be lovely. What do you think?

Please post the other side as I’m assuming paint color is for walls - which we can’t see. The main kitchen space is pretty neutral so we really don’t have a good idea of where to start. Also, what does the rest of your house look like - meaning is this kitchen a separate space or open concept? A paint color shouldn’t be suggested or chosen in a vacuum. More info please.

First of all, do not paint your molding trim different colors. Yes, B.M. claims that any color in the Affinity collection will coordinate with each other. What is not addressed is the natural light which comes into each room changes paint colors dramatically, so all those colors will change once up on your walls.

Thanks for doing that mjlb! I actually considered a bright green, not quite that bright (Behr's Basil). I'm not a gray person, unless it's really warm with lots of cream/black. The rest of my house is SW Whole Wheat and Camelback and the gray doesn't really flow. I painted a swatch of Behr's Sorrel Brown. It blends with the cabinets but I kind of like that look. Eventually we would like to put stone in the backsplash. The stone in the photo is more gray than in person. The Sorrel brown matches the leather sofas and I thought it was nice to bring that in the kitchen. If I choose the brown, I will repaint the island a cream color with a brown glaze (or possibly distressed black) and bring in more cream, green (the green of the apples in the basket) and red. Is this a bad idea?

Someone here or maybe over on the Kitchens board recently painted her walls a terra cotta color. I love green and that is always my go-to first choice. But, maybe the terra cotta would bridge the brown and the red you are playing with.

Let me pop over there and see if I can find it for you...
