How to make a "built-in" fridge look more built-in
Comments (14)Gary - no, the 700 series didn't doesn't have "gills" at all. It's systems are down in the bottom of the unit and are completely covered by cabinetry toekick and / or the bottom drawer panel. It was the first unit to be TOTALLY concealed ( no trim, no fins, no gaskets showing ) and is for the most part unchanged since it's rollout in the LATE 90's !!!! - which is its biggest drawback today....See MoreEntertainment center, console, built in... where to house the tv?
Comments (3)We had a similar situation when we moved into our home, with the placement of the windows on one side and doorway on the other. We have a two-story ceiling in our family room and the proportions were a challenge for me. After looking at many consoles and media centers, we decided on a built in wall unit that we could match to the existing trim and wasn't much more than some of those modular console sets. It was nice to be able to decide on the dimensions with our taller ceiling and while it took longer to have it built and installed, we don't regret it at all. The electronic components are "hidden" in the cabinets and we got some additional lighting into the room by putting lights in the top part of the unit. I can totally relate to not being able to find the exact kind or size of cabinets you're looking for, so if you can find a cabinet maker in your area, maybe you could compare that quote to the price of some of the units you've found that would also work in your home. Good luck!...See MoreHome renovation - dated fireplace / built ins
Comments (30)Thank you everyone - will definitely close up the niches! Behind the sofa is another odd challenge. The owners moved a staircase to open up the floor which is great - but it creates that odd wall. Our contractor suggested removing that and replacing it with a bannister like the one in the adjacent room. As you can see, the stairs going to the lower level now look like you're going into a dungeon. Taking out the wall to the floor level and opening it up with a bannister I thought was a great idea to make it look less like a tunnel and open up the space even more. Also want to replace the ugly hand rail. Not fond of the cut out - thought I could wrap the columns with trim to make them look like they should be there. By now you're probably wondering why we bought this home - but it sits on a golf course with a fabulous view and in a lovely community. Love your input - any suggestions for this are very welcome!!...See MoreHELP-Tired of white built-ins....
Comments (14)We just bought a house with built-in bookcases and cabinets around a fireplace. I would advise you to slow down and give some thought as to how you will use the bookcases or whether you can live without them. Honestly, I think they have a dated amateur DIY look about them. The style of the valance is totally out of sync with the style of the FP surround. The louvered doors will be a dusting headache and, again, the doors don't mesh stylistically. What 'I' would do is either remove them entirely & use stand alone bookcases (if needed) or remove the valance & replace with a more appropriate header. And reduce the depth of the bottom cabinet with shelving top to bottom, all the same width. The bottom cabinet portion is threatening to swallow the fireplace; all one depth shelving would be an improvement. But, still, I don't like how the shelving is crowding the mantel so I would be strongly inclined to remove altogether. Very important to make the decision to remodel or remove the cases before the floors are refinished....See Morefrancoise47
