built-ins without the tv over the fireplace??
Comments (14)Oh that's so funny, we have the exact same floorplan. I was not open to putting the TV on the wall opposite the windows b/c then you'd have to put a couch in front of the windows and face away from the backyard, plus block the view. Definitely not putting a TV in front of the windows so that only leaves the fireplace wall. And the built-ins were already there and they take up every single inch of that wall -- no drywall at all. Our windows go all along the family room wall and then all along two of the three walls on the breakfast nook bump out (the third wall has a door to the pantry) and then it's all connected and open to the kitchen. With the way our built-ins are set up, there wouldn't be enough room for the tv on either side regardless. I like the room in the above link that has the TV in built-ins to the side of the fireplace and doors are covering it so you don't have to have it in view all the time. Another thought is raising the hearth of the fireplace. What gets me is the staggered look of the tv next to the fireplace, but not at the same level. Wouldn't want the TV super low so raising the fireplace would allow them to be more even. I don't know...just a thought. Overall, I'm ok with our TV being over the fireplace. If I were designing it, I would probably have done it differently. The mantle is higher than standard so our TV is higher too. I'd make the mantle lower if I could have. Then the TV could be a little lower as well....See MoreCustom built homes - when did you get your move in/completion date?
Comments (9)We worked closely with our builder because we accepted a contract to sell the previous house and would have to move. The date kept changing by 2-6 weeks, until we said we are writing this date into the contract, and now we are locked. We gave ourselves a 2 week window just in case; we only needed one week of it. We also were in the final stages of the build, and didn't forsee any major reasons we wouldn't have a certificate of occupancy....See MoreTore out built-ins, what to do with gaps between wall & fireplace
Comments (33)Thanks Ci_lantro for the code info! I looked up our local code and it's only 6 inches from the firebox for mantels and trim and combustible materials within 12 inches can only protrude an 1/8" for every inch away from the firebox. We have appx 22" of space now. Good info to have it we plan on putting the trim around it. We peeked behind to see where the drywall ends. We could take out the first row of brick but there is no drywall after that - and my drywall skills aren't such that I want to get into that mess (or pay someone to do it). Thanks everyone for the ideas. We have plans in the next week with a friend in the fireplace business and a family member familiar with the code so we'll pick their brains with some of these ideas!...See MoreFireplace Built-In Dilemma!
Comments (5)I'm having the same issue. I want to add some built-ins around the fireplace in the house we just bought, but the fireplace is almost flush to the wall, and it is stone all the way to the ceiling, like yours. I found some pictures showing it can be done and look good. I think it helps if you can somehow tie the mantel into the built-ins. I'm thinking of putting wood facing around the top half of the fireplace and matching it to the built-ins....See MoreRelated Professionals
