Good link, Ellen, LOL! I still use my egg cubers for parties and thank Beachlily's dad for inventing them. I still have the banana bunker....buried in a drawer for sentimental reminiscing of the good old days. Where is spewey, anyways?

I can just see it now. Dcarch will see that square egg and develop a mold for a mini square loaf pan.

Huuum...I like the cube egg deal...well not that I like a square egg but I'm having so darn much trouble peeling the stupid eggs these days that way I could make boiled eggs, and not have to peel them. If they could make them a deviled egg friendly shape they'd have something. I'm getting so sick and tired of the egg falling all apart while peeling even though I have tried every method known to mankind for getting them to peel easily...UGH!

Arkansas, just steam the eggs for about 20 minutes, let them set covered with the heat off for 5 min. Put the eggs in cold water to stop the cooking and then peel. The shells will pop off very easily. The trick is to shell them as soon as possible. If they set or you put them in the refrig. they will be difficult to peel, just like the boiled eggs. Works like a champ!

What the heck do they have against square eggs????? Father-in-law designed it as a joke. I think he didn't have enough work that particular day.

Peeling hard boiled eggs under running water makes it easier. Water gets between the shell and the white, preventing the shell from sticking.

Don't even bother, I have tried everything in the book...done extensive research on the issue and nothing makes any difference. The trick is NOT to peel them right away because they helps NONE! One egg will peel perfectly the next one will tear into smithereens!

beachlily, you mean steam them in a basket steamer? I have to say that's a new one...I'll have to do that next time.

Arkansas_girl, I use my Black and Decker Handy Steamer. Put the eggs in, add water, steam for 20 mins and the shells practically jump off the eggs as you are peeling them under running water. Every time. Always works. Even with fresh eggs.

OK I'm going to go and steam some right now and I'll report if I have better luck because I've only cooked them in water...not steamed! I just love deviled eggs but it's no good if they are all torn up. What's really weird is I never used to have this issue with eggs and I've always made them the same way. Only recently have I been experimenting with all sorts of methods. I mean darn, I've been cooking for 30 years for crying out loud! It's not like I've never heard the ol' "peel them under running water" trick :(

Just an update on the steam cooked eggs, I don't have a steamer thing but I have a steamer basket and I cooked a few eggs in it and the shell DO IN FACT peel right off! Thanks for that suggestion! I have been researching this problem and apparently there are many people this is happening to but of all the many many suggestions I've read, no one ever suggested steaming an egg! Who'd a thunk it!? Thanks!

Years ago Lars posted the idea of steaming eggs. I don't have a steamer either, just use the steam basket I use to steam veggies.

In fact, the square egg press "invention" belonged to father-in-law's employer because it was developed during working hours. FIL was a tool and dye maker and every job shop he worked in got problem jobs from GM--GM just followed FIL. His mind was such that he could solve problems easily. I know there was one issue with Corvette valve covers in 1989 or so. He was tickled when we took a vacation to visit him and we drove our Corvette 1989.It was the first time he could see "his" valve covers in action. Sort of. Anyway, he wasn't a forth-coming, friendly person so we made points when we could. He about burst his buttons when I toured the shop he worked in and could ask intelligent questions. Luckily, his son (my DH) doesn't resemble his father.

Not ever a gift. I actually bought! 6 square egg molds (they were only $1.25 each then). Waaay back in my youth. Precisely for the purpose of having an appetizer platter that was not ordinary. Thirty years later, my grandchildren think they are great fun to have deviled from grandma's magic kitchen (I tell them they come from square chickens.)

I also grow white skinned cucumber, purple green beans that are magic (they turn green when cooked), and bright red carrots, purple broccoli, chocolate sweet peppers, gold raspberries, and ugly warty but very sweet heirloom melons.

It is all about fun with food.

Ok Arkansas girl, you're starting to turn me into a believer... I don't like deviled eggs but my family loves them and I never had a problem peeling eggs until the past year or so... and I too tried every trick in the book I could find... next time I'll steam them.

I love my egg cubers. I fooled my DGS until he was 6, then he put some serious thought into it a proclaimed that it was a trick and insisted on seeing the egg in the shell.
