I don't really get the obsession w/ being timeless -- My purpose has always been in the pursue of beauty (together with function, of course). I bet most people who design a so-called timeless interior (or piece of art/furniture) didn't set out to achieve that. They set out to create something beautiful, and if that happened to stand the test of time, great. If not, who cares---great art are often misunderstood. hehe.. :-D 99.9% of the things in my house are bought used, and are often old (not antique). I don't know if they are *timeless* but in my eyes they are beautiful -- that's good enough for me. :-D the other 0.01% of our stuff are just really ugly, but they are loved & well regarded by my children/DH so okay, I'll let them take a pass. :-D I read magazine (uber glossy ones) a lot. I also kept older ones. There are always things to be learned, from the past & present -- There are a lot of bad rooms in 1930s magazines just as there are many of wonderful room in 2009 issues. I don't read magazines (or even catalog) so I can learn the newest trend (and jump on the bandwagon). I read to learn new ideas, to see beautiful things and figure out why are certain rooms more appealing than others. What really bugs me are new things that pretend to be old. Fake patina gets me. There is no shame in being new. I like patina that's there because the piece has been loved been used been around. So to answer your question, Parma, in order to decorate in a "timeless" style, one must decorate with things (which you think) are beautiful & useful, & well loved. As for what would stand the test of time, I think in general, a piece of furniture that has nice scale, good proportion, and well crafted has better chance of surviving the design Darwinism compare to something that's poorly designed.

My advice - find another place to post pictures that doesn't pop an ad up on every single click of a picture. That's enough to make me close the page and stop looking. I looked at both - the craigslists ad & Angelfire. On craigslists I like a bulleted list of features instead of reading a few lines. Makes it easier to glance at features when there after reading so many ads.. btw, you can use HTML at Craigslists, so you can bold and make fonts larger. Thank you everyone. I am having trouble typing right now so I can't respond to each of you at the moment but I wanted to clarify that I am not rafor. I tried setting up a photobucket account the other night and I felt like each page just got hung and I'm not sure I ever actually set up an account. Is it always that slow? We have grayish white trim througout our house because we replaced all of the windows in our house with Anderson Woodright windows that were prepainted. I insisted on realwood mullions because I like the look of them architecturally better than the mullions inside the glass. We had to match our trim to them....DH is my painter and he will not repaint them. I will try to add more later. The keyboard on this computer is sticking and making it hard to type right now. I wouldn't worry about what to call it. If you like a more modern type of farmhouse look, this exterior is probably one of the easiest to make it look like one. Check out these pics and follow what they've done. Since you're getting new windows, look at doing the darker exterior color like black or a dark bronze, bring in some wood accents, and if you need a new roof at some point, look at metal. your little overhang porch could easily be done like this. as for the interior, love JudyG's design w/the wood entry. removing that wall and opening up the staircase w/that stair style would be perfect for the look you want. taking down that wall would look something like this: but you could choose the style of staircase you like
