Hi neighbor! We are from Minnesota, and do a lot of camping. One place you may want to consider is the Boundary Waters Canoe Area... Beautiful! It's up in the northernmost part of MN. We go to a lot of state campgrounds... some of our favorites are St. Croix State Park, Interstate Park (I prefer the Wisconsin side), and Lake Itasca. Try the MN DNR site for good descriptions of each park; you can even reserve camping on the site. We like the walk-in or backpack sites- more privacy, and usually they really in the middle of nature. In Wisconsin, we like Big Bay State Park (Apostle Islands- in Lake Superior.) You take a ferry from Bayfield, WI out to the island (Madeline). Amnicon Falls Park is also a winner. Really... there are so many, I can't name them all. Northern MN or WI are the best locations- you really can't lose there. Have fun!

There are a number of problems with what she is doing. First it is best to use weights to make this kind of bread...you can't just say " about 1/3 c of starter " . Won't work. This is supposed to be a very wet dough. So her measurements for water aren't off but she didn't allow for the wet starter ! You are starting with something that is quite difficult unless you are used to working with wet doughs. Jim Lahey has a wonderful and easy wet dough to try first before you use a sourdough wet dough . He doesn't use weights but his formula is impossible to mess up. I would be glad to give you a perfect formula for a sourdough boule like you are trying to make and it is tried and true as I use it all the time. The weights are very accurate and it is fool proof.Do the link first a few times though. The other problem with her starter/possibly your starter is the way it is being fed and stored. It has to be fed = parts water and flour every single day. It has to have 1/2 of it thrown out every single day for the first week and then add in the new flour and water. This makes it very healthy and prevents over-growth of unwanted bacteria and helps the good yeast thrive. Another thing is how it is stored. It must only be lightly covered. It has to be really stirred every day and kept only lightly covered as yeasts are aerobic and need oxygen to thrive. I don't know how she got her starter going. I have a t&t formula for that too :) Mine has been growing very happily for 4 years and I use it weekly. There is something wrong with the Youtube as I kept getting an echo and couldn't get it to play right so I gave up ! The temp in your house isn't too cool. A healthy starter loves cooler temps. My brother has done this many times. One time...I believe he was in college in Ely, MN. It was a survivalist camp. They dropped them off on some island in the Boundary Waters and told them they would be back in a week to pick them up. They had a small backpack and a sleeping bag and that was it! He loved it!!! This thread is getting kind of comical with the discussion of what an outhouse is versus a porta potty. If you go to www.dictionary.com, here's the definition of OUTHOUSE: an outbuilding with one or more seats and a pit serving as a toilet; privy. dictionary.com doesn't have a definition for porta potty, so I checked the associated encyclopedia, which is reference.com. For porta potty, they suggested Portable Toilet. Here's the definition of Portable toilet: A portable toilet , also known as a 'porta-potty', is a modern, portable, self-contained outhouse manufactured of molded plastic in a variety of colors and are often used as a temporary toilet for construction sites and large social gatherings. So, right there in virtual print, at reference.com, it says that a Porta Potty is a portable toilet, which is..... a modern, portable, self-contained outhouse! And, an outhouse is an outbuilding with one or more seats and a pit serving as a toilet; Granted, the 'pit' in a porta potty is shallow and self contained (not dug in the ground) but it is certainly a pit. And, so far as having hand sanitizer and real toilet paper, those are often included in traditional wooden outhouses as well as the plastic modern outhouse porta potty!
