Where Should We Camp?

Ok so DH and I just moved to Iowa from CA. Miss all the wonderfull places we used to camp there and now having to find new adventures here and in our surrounding states (MN, WI, IL, MO, etc) any ideas/suggestions?

We tent camp, love to relax, fish, hike, and relax. We don't need running water or even flush toilets. We know with showers and such you get more people. We have been to the N/E part of the state to Yellow River Forest and been to Forestville, MN. DH would go to the same place over and over again if I didn't complain, but I enjoy trying to find some place new. Hard to search the web as most sites really don't do some places justice.

I just came across this site today and have been reading all your posts and looking forward to chatting with some fellow campers. It has been a tuff adjustment to go from such a wonderland of places to a place where a small hill is considered a mountain!

Well, camp anywhere except on concrete! Makes it tough to pound in yer tent stakes!
I'd suggest going to an established campground for the first time out, if you haven't camped in the new place where you live. then make the aquaintance of the fellow campers there, and, in no time at all, they will fill you in on a lot of things you need to know about where to go!
most campers are a friendly lot, although there are a few stuffed shirts who will look down their noses at ya! But those people are few and far between.

Hi neighbor! We are from Minnesota, and do a lot of camping. One place you may want to consider is the Boundary Waters Canoe Area... Beautiful! It's up in the northernmost part of MN. We go to a lot of state campgrounds... some of our favorites are St. Croix State Park, Interstate Park (I prefer the Wisconsin side), and Lake Itasca. Try the MN DNR site for good descriptions of each park; you can even reserve camping on the site. We like the walk-in or backpack sites- more privacy, and usually they really in the middle of nature. In Wisconsin, we like Big Bay State Park (Apostle Islands- in Lake Superior.) You take a ferry from Bayfield, WI out to the island (Madeline). Amnicon Falls Park is also a winner. Really... there are so many, I can't name them all. Northern MN or WI are the best locations- you really can't lose there. Have fun!

No chance of snow here, hot and humid here. I didn't tell the kids but they might have guessed from our shopping trip today. Was looking for Aqua shoes, we found them and have each got a pair. I've been told the water is suitable for swimming but shoes should be worn due to a crustation in the water with a spine on it's back. Also have been told that there are no leeches at this place BUT the last time they were there, there had been reports of a bullshark spotted in the lake. Yes it's a seawater lake. At least if we don't want to we don't have to go in the water then there's no chance of being eaten. There's no bears over here, I don't think I'd want to go to sleep in an area near bears. I also went looking for a billy, we do have some but I doubt that we will be allowed to have a campfire. I'm only taking simply cooked and carried foods. Maybe some bacon, eggs and pancakes for breakfast, cereal, bread, tinned foods. There's shops about 10 minutes away if need be and a seafood co-op too, I'm looking forward to a big meal of prawns.

One the secretaries in my office is totally blind. She is just amazing. I work in NYC and she takes 3 different subways to get to work. She doesn't hesitate to ask for help if she needs it, but that is rare. She and I both loved spinach pies from a restaurant nearby and whenever I went there I'd bring her one. One day she asked how to get to the restaurant and I gave her the directions (she did not want anyone to accompany her). A short time later, she was back with her spinach pie! She said she got there all by herself and when she got right to the door someone asked her what she was looking for and she said the name of the restaurant and they guy said you've found it and opened the door for her! She went to a camp for the blind when she was a child, actually she still goes some years.

Do you entertain in this room or is it strictly for family TV watching? If everyone wants to cuddle up on the big sectional then I would float it in the middle, but it looks too large to walk around it that way. Get one with fewer seats. If you have guests over a lot, they'll be happier if you have a pair of chairs and a 3-seat couch (maybe with a chaise portion that can flip from left to right when you want to rearrange.) People won't sit in the corner and they'll usually leave a vacant seat between them on any sofa. No one will want to sit on the end of the chaise with nothing to support their back, and they may not feel comfortable hogging the entire thing for themselves. It isn't very practical for entertaining.

Man, I have also recently ordered flag pole light on Amazon for my landscape and I am very satisfied with it! This thing has automatic daylight sensor, it fits most flagpoles from 15-25 feet with 1 minute installation. Moreover, solar flag pole light is best in brightness and batteries last long enough. I put it in front of my house so that everybody who passes over see my new purchase! And what about your flag, I would recommend you to put it on house-top, in front of a door or in front of a house because the main reason is to put it in such way that most of the people see it, otherwise why should you buy it?

Tweinke -- I hope you're still lurking here. I remember great camping trips as a kid in northern Minnesota. My husband and I would like to return this summer, but we'd like to have a cabin. I've found vacation rental homes, but it's just the two of us and we want something rustic (with a bathroom) on a lake. I've checked the DNR site, but it seems to only have campgrounds. Do you know whether the State parks have cabins for rent?

Hi quandary!

I am not sure about private cabins... the DNR does have some cabins for rent in some state parks. Check out:

I know Itasca has some with bathrooms, and I think they are fairly close to the lake there. Other state parks also have cabins, but some are more rustic than others. Good luck!

REd Bluff in Missouri is beautiful. Nice Cold creek. Has pot type bath rooms and water pump not far. Both tent and RV camping there. If interest email me and I can give you basic directions there. Its on the huzzuh creek. There are spots where the creek is only 3-6 inches deep. Great for little ones , but also deeper places for *real* swimming.

I realize I'm weighing in a bit late, but I'm new here. If you don't mind a drive up to my home state, Minnesota, I'd recommend you visit the North Shore of Lake Superior. I'm fond of Split Rock Lighthouse State Park, but there are more parks and trails than I can mention here. I've got a homepage with some of my favorite spots listed. Feel free to check it out.
