Help with Mudroom/Sunroom Layout

My husband and I recently moved into a new home. We are growing into the house and don't currently have furniture for all of the rooms. What's really confusing me at the moment is our "mudroom", a room that links between our attached garage and the kitchen/rest of the house. This room has two walls of windows, with 3 doors. One door to the garage, a door to the backyard, and a door to the drive. We generally enter into this space from either the garage or the drive, so we need a place to drop our things. I bought a bench/hutch from LL Bean for the drive entry-door and that seems to be a catch-all for most things. I just simply don't know what else to do with this space. We don't want a tv room, since we have our tv in the living room. I think it might work as a sitting room, since it has lots of windows and can be nice and sunny. The room is ~13 ft x 15 ft. Any help for how to decorate this space is appreciated.

Do you have pets? Do you have kids that can use a play space like ping pong or foosball? Can you get an armoire that can be used for storage and hanging space...hats, gloves, etc? Or for pantry storage like canned goods and bottles of stuff? How about a recycling center? With all that wonderful light, and durable flooring, how about a table and chairs to use for crafting space for painting projects and other potentially messy things?

I'd love that space for a painting/art area.. an office.. maybe even a library if it isnt too high traffic. It looks like it gets great light and it's so open -- I'd want to use the space for something I enjoyed.

What is your dining space like? Would this be a good location for a breakfast, coffee, sitting area? I could see a big round table, a coffee station, some comfortable chairs some funky coffeehouse style photography or artwork, flowers, shelves with pottery and/or cookbooks.

Have fun with it! Do something here that you wouldn't or couldnt do elsewhere in your house!

Sounds pretty unanimous; we had better rethink the 2 separate rooms thing. Our original concept actually was to connect the two, but then DH had the bright idea to make the window into french doors, and having that entry into the sunroom seemed a better idea than having to pass through the nook to get there. Plus it allowed us to close it off for HVAC reasons. In addition, it made the roof a bit simpler/cheaper. But that's probably not worth the savings if it looks dorky. One detail I didn't include is that the nook will be 2 stories high, and the 2nd story will be a sitting room off the master with the same window configuration. The sunroom will likely have a radiant heated tile floor (we've got them in our master bath and kitchen and have grown rather addicted). SOOOOO, what if we modify as follows: --connect the two rooms by adding a wall parallel to the existing outside wall, making the far right window in the nook into a doorway (roughly 7' wide), so there's a hall about 4' long between the 2 rooms. --keep the existing french door from the FR, as that's the easiest entry. Open hallway on both sides? I don't really care about feeling like the nook's separate, but should I do something to make it more aesthetically pleasing? Perhaps columns? As for the advice on slider placement, I haven't given a lick of thought to furniture placement (we were just focused on wanting all those windows!). I'll mull that one over. Wouldn't a slider look odd if it weren't centered, though? Thanks to everyone. It sure helps to be able to bounce this off of others!

I go with the sunroom, too, and here's why. You can build a shed for cheap at some point, and until then you'll probably keep one car inthe driveway, and all the bikes and basketballs in the garage along with the yard and snow tools. The sunroom will make a great playroom while the little ones are little. I've seen that sunroom with nothing in it but a low-pile play rug and Lego. Or balls. Or plastic hockey sticks. Or those big Little Tykes (slide, trikes, trains) Or Hot Wheels. Or dollhouses. Or art projects (easy-to-clean tile floor). Usually just one or two of those. But a great playspace, near you but not, outdoors but not. After they are done with those types of toys, it can be dining space and added living space. You don't need the shed until Boy #1 gets a car. Oops, didn't mean to scare ya lol! Upstairs, I wonder if you can steal some space from the game room to make a reach-in closet for Bedroom 2, and use its walk-in closet to expand the bathroom. 5 boys will need more counterspace, more drawer storage, and (I can't believe I'm saying this, I'm usually a 1-sink gal) 2 sinks. Downstairs, consider eliminating the study closet and adding a shower to the powder room.

Sounds good. I would just suggest window seating plus seating in the center since the windows are far apart.Maybe long bench under the 8' window and chairs and table facing each other in the middle of the room. At the backyard door end of the bench (extending past window), it could be open shelves underneath for shoes or a lift up top for storage (or both). and hooks above for jackets. That leave the rest of the bench under the window but is one continuous unit. And also leaves the other windows open for viewing. On the walls against the stairs, you could add shelving or a bookcase or bar cart.

IMO the sun room would be a better spot for LR type use and the TV in the space next to the kitchen. I think too many windows that will require to much window covering to cut glare in this space . BTW the area near the kitchen also a better place for a playroom . I like spaces for adult conversation out of the kitchen area.

Most definitely I would use it as a houseplant room, and over-wintering houseplants that will go back outdoors in spring.

I thought I replied to this, but I agreed with Andee. I see you have plants already, why not get a long, tiered plant stand to put under the windows?

An indoor/outdoor large area rug with garden colors would be nice. You can put an indoor mat near the door to wipe feet on.

It's a great place to use as a sitting room. Maybe some wicker furniture?

Thank you all for the great thoughts! It really helps to hear others' opinions.

I do agree that I need something to hold the plants. I've been dragging my feet on this because I didn't know how I wanted the rest of the room to look, so I wasn't sure what kind of stand to buy.

I also like the idea of the indoor/outdoor rug. I think that will bring color into the space and keep the floor a bit warmer (tile gets cold here in New England!).

This is a high traffic room (since it's where we enter the house, as well as where guests enter), so I want it to look put together. I am thinking a sitting room is the way to go. I may consider moving some of my current living room furniture there and buying something new for the living room itself.

I need to figure out the paint for this room also. I am thinking of a sunny cream (something like BM Windham cream) or perhaps a blue-green shade akin to BM Palladian Blue (have this in the dining room and it looks nice with the dark wood molding). Any thoughts on this?

Be careful of painting this pretty room in a cream color -- the yellow undertones may clash with the pinky/taupe tones in the floor tiles ....

But a paint color with a slightly grayer tone might work very very nicely ....how about BM Pashmina AF-100? Then add some brighter fresh green accents ....

Love the idea of a plant stand! :)

Nice room. Yes, a sitting room to read, relax, with lots of plants would work perfectly. Eleen Kennon paint color Taupe would be perfect with your floor and your wood. Love the space!
