Personally I have no experience but I googled up the following article about someone with a similar problem. Not that I would rush into anything since nitrogen might not be the right "fix" Is it too late to simply remove as much of the compost as you can? I thought you might also contact someone like Kings Park in WA whose horticulturalists might help, or even your State's main botanical gardens/ department of primary industries who would have qualified people who may have suggestions.
