Mid-range DSLR Recommendations?

I've been kicking around the idea of finally ditching our point and shoot for a new DSLR. Don't want anything too complicated - we're just your regular run of the mill amateur photogs. Won't do much high-speed fancy photography. Mostly nature and kids. We also do a lot of home renovations so would also like to purchase a wide-angle lens right away. Don't really want to spend a ton of money on this. The only other cameras I've owned have been an old Canon AE1 and a couple sony waterproof point and shoots. They've both been very good to me.

What can you recommend in the $500-$1000 range? Including lenses? Is this ridiculous to think we could get a decent camera for that price? I saw Canon Rebel on Amazon for a great deal including some lenses.

Any advice would be much appreciated.
