Redroze--Question about your back splash
Comments (8)I'm SO sorry I haven't checked in for awhile. I was actually trying to wean myself off the Kitchen forum and look into other hobbies, but fortunately I keep getting drawn back in. LOL Here's a pic of uninstalled tiles that are sitting on the counter. The main thing gives these tiles character is they are handmade. So our backsplash guy had to make sure that the grout lines made up for the uneven edges. Also, the actual surface of the tiles itself is uneven - some tiles have areas that pop forward a bit more on the sides. You'll notice the edges of the tiles below are not perfectly straight lines. Tile guy was VERY diligent in adjusting accordingly. Finally, there is colour variation from tile to tile. So again, gives it a different look that other subways. I think this shot from my blog shows the colour differences quite well. DH says that it looks like a natural stone/marble due to the colour variation. With that in mind, I think that the non-handmade subway tiles look wonderful but have a different look. More uniform in colour, edges, and surface flatness. I'm assuming the Daltile is a non-handmade tile? I don't think you should be concerned about it looking boring, but it will look different than the Ann Sacks. Why are you worried about going matte? I think it will balance well with your polished Bianco Antico. I can see clearly from your paper template that the 2x8s will look great. I don't even have to tell you about the hundreds of thousands of kitchens that use the standard subway tile and look hella terrific. What are you concerned about specifically? Perhaps I can help....See More98.627% Finished Kitchen - Transitional White Inset w/ glass tile
Comments (136)Thank you all again for the compliments, it's been a long time and I wanted to reply to a couple of questions. go_figure, the dimensions of the oven/pantry cabinetry is 16 feet. The range cabinetry is 10 feet. The island is slightly over 7' long by 3' wide. Regarding the red espresso machine, we LOVED that machine and tried to make sure we matched some red items with it. Sadly it died about 18 months ago. We replaced it with a bland silver espresso machine which actually produces much better coffee. We still can't get ourselves to throw away the broken red machine so it sits in our basement knowing it will never get fixed... Thanks again all, and best wishes on all of your remodels!...See MoreFinished Dark Espresso Maple with White Delicatus
Comments (17)Once again I so appreciate the compliments on our kitchen from all of you. This kitchen forum is where I learned of our granite, about stacked cabinets.... So I am very grateful. :) We really love the Miele coffee system. We were not huge coffee drinkers but now enjoy a cup or two quite often, it's so simple to use. It's nice to also have quick access hot water for teas, hot chocolate.... Our ceilings are 9' 1 in the kitchen area and 11' 1 in the great room. I really love how the stacked cabinets turned out. Haven't figured what decorations to put in the glass cabinets at the top yet. The cabinets up there are dark but do have lights inside to display stuff. The paint color is if I remember correctly is called Wrightstone by ICI Paints. Any suggestions for lighting to add more bling above the island would be wonderful as well as what to put in the upper glass cabinets. Thanks again....See MoreRedroze & others w/dark floors- will you hate my kitchen??
Comments (20)Just looked at some of the above posts and images. I love Boxerpups' stain, it's just lovely!!! I think the think that "bugs" me about the golden oak is the yellowish undertone, which is of course subjective. I think you could pull off lighter floors in a caramel colour, or nutmeg colour. If you do choose the golden oak,I noticed that many of the inspiration photos with golden oak floors have all white kitchens including a white island which helps keep everything feeling neutral since the gold of the floors provide a bit of a pop. If you do go with a stained island, as I mentioned, you have to make sure it goes with your hardwood stain...compliments it. One point - I think it's a misconception that dark floors make your house look smaller. I've read in some magazine that it actually makes your room look bigger especially if you have light walls and ceilings, as the dark floors make the floors look deep and the light ceilings and walls look expansive. I've also seen small condos with dark floors that look superb. I agree though, do what you like!...See Moremalhgold
