Finished Dark Espresso Maple with White Delicatus

We have been in our new home almost a year but due to some changes I made in the kitchen, and some mess ups it took a while to finally be done, yay!!! This forum helped me immensely, so thanks to everyone here at Gardenweb!!!

Here are the details:

badgergal- great point. In fact, I spent some time thinking about all the options. Here was the problem with that area: The run of wall cabinets stops about 4" shorter than the countertop. If I were to end it at the wall cabinet, it would've looked silly by not extending to the end of the counter. And I couldn't stop it right at the end of the counter, because it would've split the triple switch cover. So the best option for me (at least what I decided)was just to run it all the way to the door trim. I do have a little tile left, and trust me, it has been discussed!

I'm very happy with mine. I had slab cabinets in the past and these are shaker so having little ledges to catch dust was a new thing for me. My old cabinets were also dark so the dust thing is clearly a function of the cabinet door design because I never noticed dust in the past. It's not a big deal - I do sometimes brush the corners with a pastry type brush to get the dust out of there if I notice it building up. There's no problem with fingerprints. I have good windows in my kitchen but we live in the woods so it's relatively dark in my house no matter what. I also have a galley kitchen and 42" uppers - which could make for a cave like appearance. Even though I had dark cabinets before when these went in after having the white, empty kitchen for a couple weeks it was shocking. In fact I thought I might have made a huge mistake. I got over that idea in about a day though - once I adjusted to the change - and I've just loved them ever since. I do have a lot of types of lighting and glass doors on some of the cabinets. I don't have a lot of stainless though - paneled fridge and dishwasher and mantle hood. I also have a high, vaulted, white ceiling which is helpful I think. Counters and floor are light. I think alot depends on if it's important to you to have a light, bright feel in your kitchen or if you like warm and cozy. I am definitely in the latter camp.

Thanks rtwilliams! We have a Nebraska furniture mart just a few minutes away so will have to go check it out and look at what they have (bet my husband won't even let me near the place). I still have my heart set on a creamy leather chair to team up with a black table .....maybe something similar to this (although I kind of wanted something with a nailhead trim too) and maybe a nice rug. And...and.... The paint that I used for the doors is Sherwin Williams All Surface Enamel Latex in Satin Black. I had no idea what I was doing, so it is what the salesperson recommended. The first one I painted about 6 weeks ago, so it hasn't gotten too much wear and tear yet, but it seems to be holding up well. I was really worried about how it would clean up, but we actually scraped the popcorn off the ceiling of a room with a black door (anybody who has done this knows how much dust it generates), and it cleaned up beautifully. The true test will be the door to the garage because the dogs will sometimes scratch to go out. Not very vigorously, so we'll see how much it will take.

breadandsuch, I am waiting for a price quote on the Shiloh Inset cabinetry since I fell in love with the look in a show room near me and I remember that is what you had also that I loved. I will keep you and everyone updated. My kitchen is smaller but Home Depot refacing gave me a ridiculous $18,000 to reface my cabinetsbefore new counters and leaving the soffit and Home Depot $9,000 before removing the soffit and new counters and installation of my floors. I am hoping the new cabinets will be doable since I love them and I am ready also for a new counter and better lighting. The cabinet store had the Polar in the store with the square recessed panel and it was beautiful. But yours is so beautiful also. I guess if the quote is good, I will then have to decide between the Polar and the Soft White.

Thank you both so much, I am very pleased now. The only thing I might still change one day is maybe replacing the pendants over the island with mini chandeliers if I can ever find the perfect ones in a reasonable price range.

Oh this is so elegant, smooth and classy. What a nice space it must be to work in and also to relax in. You did a fantastic job!!

I love your cabinets, the granite, and of course your beautiful floors.

And the Miele coffee maker is the bomb. We recently got one too and I can't say enough about how great it's made our day-to-day use of the kitchen. We drink a lot of coffee and having it always available, no muss no fuss, is one of my favorite things. How are you liking it?

Anyway, congrats and best wishes for many years of happiness in your beautiful new space.

Very lovely! I really like how well integrated to the open space this beauty is...and the granite is perfect! I do like the pendants you have, simple and elegant, but see what you mean by wanting to add a bit more bling!!! Enjoy!!!

Exquisite! Of course, Delicatus is my favorite granite, and it goes so well with your gorgeous cabinets! Love the stacked cabinet look and with the dramatic large pulls. How high are your ceilings? Beautiful!

Beautiful! LOVE the granite, backsplash, floor, cabinets! Love it all. Enjoy your gorgeous kitchen! Delicatus is one of my favorites. The chandeliers would be amazing in your space. Maybe as a birthday/anniversary/Christmas present?!

Once again I so appreciate the compliments on our kitchen from all of you. This kitchen forum is where I learned of our granite, about stacked cabinets.... So I am very grateful. :)

We really love the Miele coffee system. We were not huge coffee drinkers but now enjoy a cup or two quite often, it's so simple to use. It's nice to also have quick access hot water for teas, hot chocolate....

Our ceilings are 9' 1 in the kitchen area and 11' 1 in the great room. I really love how the stacked cabinets turned out. Haven't figured what decorations to put in the glass cabinets at the top yet. The cabinets up there are dark but do have lights inside to display stuff. The paint color is if I remember correctly is called Wrightstone by ICI Paints.

Any suggestions for lighting to add more bling above the island would be wonderful as well as what to put in the upper glass cabinets. Thanks again.
