Another thing to consider is the soil pH. If it's too high it could inhibit flowering. Are the azaleas in an area where lime has been applied, such as next to the lawn? A soil test sent to VA Tech will tell you if this is a problem. Your local cooperative extension office can tell you where to get the test kit. It's much more reliable than the inexpensive kits you can buy at the store. Have you pruned them at all? I don't know when they set buds for the summer bloom but I've only done some selective pruning on mine. I'm in zone 7 near Richmond and mine bloom sporadically all summer with a full flush of blooms in spring and again in fall. I've had them for 9 years this month.

He's right, all you can do is wait and see at this point. Unfortunately if it survives, it might be so severly stunted that the other may grow significantly larger in the next couple of years. Only time will tell. Just be careful not to overwater or underwater as this will make matters worse...sometimes less care is best for maples.

About the watering, that also depends allot of the soil, climate, and what it's been doing lately. Where are you located? i.e. I'm in Northwest Arkansas. For here, at this time, 2-3 inches a week would be way too much water, probable even for a red maple that likes water.

That's a pretty one. And, I'm with ya'll, it never ceases to amaze me how fleeting the vibrant colors can be in a beautiful sunrise/sunset.
