I think the style is either cottage or country. What style are you trying to achieve. Here is my opinion and it is worth what you paid for it ;) Modern won't work. Eclectic could, cottage yes, country yes, traditional probably not, transitional could work depending on other things.

think if you really like it then I'm guessing your style is leaning somewhat towards it anyways so it should work. Color wise I think it could work. That would be a very pretty color against gray.

I think it's adorable, but yes, to me it screams country cottage/shabby chic (and so for that piece I see the walls being white).

It would look great in beach cottage decor. In fact, I've grown to love eclectic beach cottage as my favorite decor. :)

Well, I think you should go with your gut, and what it seems like your gut is saying is I love this, but it is not working with the direction I want to take me house.

Didn't someone post recently don't decorate around a mistake? You just keep throwing money at it and you are never happy? Can't remember what thread, but might be a good read for you to help you make up your mind. :)

That all said, I love the piece.

Sometimes you have to get the paint up and on the walls and the furniture in place to see if it is going to work or not. I'd stop buying anything else till the house is done and you've had time to see it and how the light is going to play in the house.
In the meantime collect pics, blogs, ideas whatever you need to do to find your style but don't start sweating it till the house is done. Lots can happen in that time frame. Your taste could even change between when the first nail goes in to when you actually get to move in.
Lastly remember if the style works but the color doesn't you can ALWAYS paint.

Boopadaboo - I did read that thread about decorating around a mistake! I just can't decide yet if this is a mistake or not, KWIM?

I definitely love the idea of eclectic, but I find there's a really difficult balance between eclectic and just plain *crazy*.

And Lyfia - if you have ideas on how I can make this fit into "transitional", I'm all ears. Transitional is the style my DH seems to like most, but at the same time, he's really intent on keeping the hutch, which I think is totally cottage and maybe the wrong direction for us. I can't decide if he REALLY thinks it works (this is probably the case, but I am obviously skeptical and consider myself more qualified to make this decision than him, haha) or if he just doesn't want to "waste" the money we spent, and so he's going to force it just so he can feel okay with the purchase.

I'd definitely consider us a casual traditional/Pottery Barn type group. We gravitate toward simple leather sofas, and I am a sucker for a shaker style/uncomplicated white kitchen, if that makes sense? That being said, I love color and am not afraid of it, I just want it to work.

I really do LOVE the piece. I'm the type that just knows instantly if I love something; I don't have to do a lot of thinking about whether or not it appeals to me. I just am not sure if it's going to fit in with the rest of my house?

Here's just a quick idea of a color palette (maybe not so much the pink, but the turquoise, brown and paprika color). I have this vision in my head of a vase of bright orangey-red tulips on a hutch this color. Again, LOVE the color of the hutch, but not sure the style is working. :(

It is a pretty cabinet -- but I do say that it is more of a cottage, shabby chic or beach house style.

I guess I am the odd one out here. I love it and I think it can work in many styles, including traditional. Wouldn't work in very modern or very formal setting, but I think it can work in relaxed traditional, transitional, cottage, country, beachy and probably lots of others too.

My kitchen island would probably be considered shabby chic or cottagy if looked at in isolation. My house is very traditional. I fell in love with the island while on vacation. Bought it (10 years ago; well, actually in-laws bought it for us as a house warming gift) and have never regretted it. Everyone that comes to my house comments on how nice and unique it is and how much they like it. Nobody has said it's nice but doesn't match your house.

I would not make any decision about selling it until the house is done and you move in and put it in place. It will look fabulous against neutral gray walls. If you don't like it then or it's just not working with the rest of the house, you can consider selling or finding another spot for it.

If you love it, you love it. If you buy what you love, it will most likely work.

Okay, so, let's say hypothetically that it doesn't work for my eating area.

Would it be too ridiculous to repurpose it as a bookcase/storage unit (maybe with some cute baskets underneath) for DD2's room?

The scale may be a bit large, but maybe not. I am planning something like this for her room, and this piece might work if I don't get too fancy with the built in...

I think it would go with your new kitchen but not sure about the gray wall color. As for the style, I love it and think it is traditional and could work with anything except total modern decor. Can you get someone to photoshop your paint color up on a wall and put the piece on it and see the contrast? I see a white or pale yellow or beige wall behind that piece.

You also might consider "French" which mixes styles and texture. I think the shuttered doors create the country feel. As well as the color. Really like it.

As for repurposing. I did so with my hutch because the kitchen was too small and the only eating area in my home. The top lifted off and I used the base in my bedroom for a long storage/side table. Could be at the end of a bed or under a window. The top portion would work hanging on a wall in another room...with the dish/glass storage pieces removed.

I also added dark mission pulls which changed the look far more than expected. All was painted a dark teal. My decor is rustic and it worked for me.

And I love the bed idea. Plus yellow as mentioned. And..putting it in the bath. Great bottom for a sink install.

Hang on to it. At least until you get the major work done. I really like the piece.

I think that you can play around with the pulls on the hutch and give it the spin you want.

try some oil rubbed bronze pulls on the hutch, and see if this takes it more of a county french transitional look

try some crystal pulls, and see if this takes it more victorian traditional

try some rustic iron pulls and see if this takes it more primative

try some funky art glass pulls and see if this takes it more eclectic.

I think it would be a mistake in the DDs room. Too large and does not add needed function very well
