What's in your lunchbag or your loved ones?

Since you make lunches in the kitchen, figured this wouldn't be too off topic ;)

Just got done making DH's lunch - I'm SO TIRED of the same ol, same ol. Looking for more ideas. OK, here's what's in his lunch for tomorrow...he works a 12-hour day.

Huge serving of my homemade Dak Makhani (Creamy Black Lentils & Kidney Beans, very spicy, Indian)

FAGE yogurt w/frozen blueberries

Powercrunch protein bar (it's high protein, low sugar, crispy wafer bar)

1/4 of a huge Hershey's Dark Chocolate bar (his fave)

Apple

Orange

Carrot & celery sticks (unless that's in his lunch, it's not lunch!)

A dip made from Ranch Dressing & Rooster Sauce (Srichi)

For backup: A can of boneless, skinless Alaska salmon (he loves this - he usually doesn't eat it but it's there just in case).

I do a lot of bulk cooking so the freezer is full of Roast Beef with gravy, split pea soup w/ham, Meatballs & Arrabbiata Sauce, other stuff I've forgotten already.

There's usually goodies at work so he's not hurting. :)

I'm a SAHM so my lunch isn't put in a bag, but here's something crazy my 5y.o. DS likes in his lunchbox. Leftover fried oysters, and roasted asparagus with tarragon. I like my leftover asparagus cold, but he likes his warmed up. I don't make a aioli much anymore with the remodel going on, but that's fab with cold roasted asparagus.

What discerning tastes for a 5 y.o.! :) I've never had aioli...do you have a recipe? I love asparagus, too. I usually just saute really quickly or grill in the summer.

I was a SAHM for our 4 kids, too...so lots of lunches to pack.

OK I love all the plants I am glad I dont have to be a judge over them but I have a question...I have 2 old men cactus and I bought a old woman this week shes bigger and harrier so if I put them all together whats gonna happen :) Also I bought a obesa (this store was going out of business) so I kinda went cacti happy. it just was tagged baseball cactus, now I didn't know about them changing sex, man what kind of cactus store as he selling LOL I truly need to read up on some of the cactus I bought I just have not had the time or know the correct name to look them up thats why love this place you can find what you need. You all have beautiful plants I learned just by looking I dont know why the old man was a bit redder than I ever saw was it out in the sun a lot this year? Bye all for now happy growing.

Someone sent this to me. SELF CPR What are you to do if you have a heart attack while you are alone? If you've already received this, it means people care about you ... The Johnson City Medical Center staff actually discovered this and did an in-depth study on it in our ICU The two individuals that discovered this then did an article on it .. had it published and have even had it incorporated into ACLS and CPR classes. It is very true and has and does work. It is called cough CPR. A cardiologist says it's the truth ... For your info ...If everyone who gets this sends it to 10 people, you can bet that we'll save at least one life. Read This...It could save your life! Let's say it's 6:15 p.m. and you're driving home (alone of course), after an usually hard day on the job. You're really tired, upset and frustrated. Suddenly you start experiencing severe pain in your chest that starts to radiate out into your arm and up into your jaw. You are only about five miles from the hospital nearest your home. Unfortunately you don't know if you'll be able to make it that far. What can you do? You've been trained in CPR but the guy that taught the course, didn't tell you what to do if it happened to yourself. Since many people are alone when they suffer a heart attack, this article seemed to be in order. Without help, the person whose heart is beating improperly and who begins to feel faint, has only about 10 seconds left before losing consciousness. However, these victims can help themselves by coughing repeatedly and very vigorously. A deep breath should be taken before each cough, and the cough must be deep and prolonged, as when producing sputum from deep inside the chest. A breath and a cough must be repeated about very two seconds without let up until help arrives, or until the heart is felt to be beating normally again. Deep breaths get oxygen into the lungs and coughing movements squeeze the heart and keep the blood circulating. The squeezing pressure on the heart also helps it regain normal rhythm. In this way, heart attack victims can get to a hospital. Tell as many other people as possible about this, it could save their lives! What if you're NOT in love, love with your granite?

Hi tinker! First I'll chime in with everyone else: do keep looking, but only up to a point. As edlakin wrote, it's really hard to compare anything to an idealized something else (I'm grossly paraphrasing). Your old kitchen and its granite can achieve (unfair) mythic status, kind of like what we do when thinking about old loves when our current love is ticking us off! You have the loveliest taste, tinker, and I know this from seeing those beautiful furnishings and textiles over on the Decorating forum. I do want to suggest that your previous granite was on top of painted cabinets (beautiful kitchen!), whereas in your new home it will be the cherry cabinets which will be supporting the granite. I'm having a hard time phrasing it the way I want, but basically your old "ideal" granite might not be so ideal in your new setting, on top of cherry (not painted) cabinets. Does that make sense? Your new granite might end up giving you the same pleasure as your old because it will now be in a completely different environment, with the different finishes complimenting the granite in ways you couldn't have imagined. This new granite might not have looked wonderful on your painted cabinets, but it might look amazing on the cherry. I'm so glad brody_miasmom shared the pictures of her beautiful kitchen so we all could see the granite with wood cabinets. I know your cabinetry (wood / door style) will be different, but it really showed how lovely that granite is with wood. What are you thinking for your backsplash and wall color? A little history. The noodle board vs stove board:. The noodle board is used in homes where pasta is traditional. The stove board is used in homes where summer kitchens are common (summer kitchen is a kitchen outside of the house, so you don't heat up the hs. in the summer). For those of us where neither pasta or summer kitchens are part of the culture we call this the pastry board. It moves around to many surfaces, stove, table, dry sink etc. And we always had a marble piece to fit it so we could do butter pastry. Once we had electricity (1959) we kept it permanently on the old wood cooking stove, since the new electric stove was hidden in a tiny pantry (we weren't really ready). So, don't feel bad if you don't know what a noodle board is, your ancestors probably didn't eat pasta much. I use a noodle rack myself because it's takes up less space. My pastry board is well over 100 yrs old, is 30 inches wide, all one slab of wood! It hangs from a square nail attached to my possum belly kitchen queen (now coffee station). I use it as my grand mother did, and love that it softens my cooktop.

I can't find my favorite aioli recipe. The book got packed in the secondary cookbook box during our move-out for reno. Here's another good one.

Process 2 large egg yolks, 4 t. fresh lemon juice, pinch of sugar, and 1/2 to 1 t. minced garlic in food processor until combined. With the machine running, slowly pour 3/4 c. veggie oil in a steady stream, about 30 seconds. Scrape down the sides. Process 5 more seconds. Add s & p to taste.

It's great with crisp veggies too. Or sometimes I put it on grilled fish if I don't have any compound butter left.

For the asparagus, I toss spears with olive oil, coarse kosher, fresh cracked pepper, and dried tarragon. Then I grill it in summer or oven roast at 475 during the winter. I live in rainy Washington state so we don't grill out all year.

I'm going to try your Arrabiata sauce as the one I made years ago wasn't as good as yours looks!

breezygirl - Thanks for the recipe. Kinda looks like mayo? Do the raw egg yolks ever freak you out? I guess one could always used pasteurized eggs.

I like to cook my asparagus that way, too. Once I tried freshly ground black pepper, there was no going back to the pre-ground stuff. I use a boatload of extra-virgin olive oil...what a lovely invention!

It's very rainy here in Valdez, we even get more than Seattle...conversely, we get the snow, too. This year has been bizarre, though...we've gotten more just plain cold & lots of hurricane-force winds.

Let me know how the Arrabbiata sauce turns out for you...remember to only use the fresh basil :) I use more than called for 'cause, well...it's just plain "Good Eats" as my hero Alton Brown would say :)

Also a SAHM, so no lunch packed for me or DH, who works from home.

Here's what was in the boys' lunches this morning.

WD's lunch.(14yo) GF Brown Rice & Flax Seed Linguine with Mussels in a Lemon Garlic Sauce. He also got a bottle of water, an apple, and some chips.

SB's lunch.(6yo) Turkey sandwich with sambal aioli(from a jar) cut with cookie cutters in a heart shape, and rabbit shape. The rabbit's eye is a sliver of pickle. Carrots & dip. Yes I've read the article about baby carrots, but they're thoroughly washed & peeled and I'm not obsessing about it. Also fruit chews & a juice pouch.

WD is gluten-free to help control his ADHD, so it's imperative that I pack him somewhat exciting lunches. I just like using cookie cutters with sandwiches for SB. That sambal aioli is his favorite sandwich topping.

Today my kids (6th grade DS, 8th grade DD) got home made apple pie for dessert in their lunches.

We celebrated Pi day yesterday (3.14) with, of course, pie. Quiche for dinner and apple pie for dessert. Good dessert left overs today!

Usually their lunches consist of a plain sandwich for DD (just bread and salami - that's what she likes!), with fruit, water, dessert. DS likes a mega sandwich -- a few kinds of meat, lettuce, tomato, cheese on a roll; plus the sides. Sometimes they do hot lunches, with soup or left over pasta or meat in a Thermos. DS is more adventurous - he likes to add salsa and other things to sandwiches. And he put extra hot sauce in our very spicy gumbo on Mardi Gras, while DD was reaching for her water glass due to the spice.

I usually work from a home office, so I mostly eat left overs. Occassional trips to Whole Foods for sushi. Yum. When I work from our downtown office, I eat wherever my office buddies are going, and I pack some fruit in my brief case. (Clementines are perfect to-go food, IMO.)

chicagoans - lucky kids to get homemade pie :) Funny how your kids can be so different, huh? I love Whole Foods. Don't have any in Alaska but I'll be in California next week so I get to visit one soon :) I also love Trader Joe's so TJ, here I come!
