Agardenstateof mind: You shouldn't have brown recluse spiders in NJ. I believe they're found in the midwest. I used to be afraid of spiders. I got over it by stopping myself from running away whenever I saw one, forcing myself to hold still, and concentrating on bringing my breathing and pulse back to normal levels, while thinking about how irrational my fear was. Eventually I stopped having that gut fight-or-flight response whenever I saw one, and they don't bother me anymore (unless they're particularly ugly and/or in a really creepy location). Now my mom and sister will call me when there's a spider in the house, and I'll trap it in a cup and release it outside. To be honest, the thought of squishing a spider bothers me WAY more than the thought of one of them crawling over me. Exoskeletons- ugh! I have replaced my fear of spiders with a fear of stairs- stair are much more dangerous (especially for us clumsy folks)! Good luck, Jenn :-)

If you have cut the vines loose from the roots but it is still green on the wall, there must be other connections to the ground, possibly on the other side of the wall already. Please do not spray that much stuff. What I would do is manually remove as much of it as you can, completely off of the wall if possible, down to the ground, and whatever roots you can extricate. If it's not possible to pull it off of the wall, just make sure you have severed all connections to the ground. This will force the roots to use stored energy reserves to start growing again. The foliage on the wall should die without its' roots, but may take a while to show it. When it starts growing again, put the tips of the new growth in a jar of foliage-ingested herbicide, like glyphosate. If you dig a little hole for the jar, it won't tip over. Cover with plastic wrap, leaving a hole just big enough for the vine to go in. The vines will drink poison and take it to the roots to kill the whole thing. Be sure to retrieve and properly dispose of the jar when the vine has died. The first few tips may not be enough to completely kill an established ivy vine. There may be several individual vines that are not connected at the roots. Keep hacking at it and sticking the tips in poison. This method prevents the substance from being sprayed, which can drift onto desirable plants nearby, and none is put on the ground. You could also use a cotton ball or paint brush to paint the cut stumps with a brush killer made for such purpose. Whatever product you might consider, please read and follow the label instructions.

Quirky - To each his own. I have lived in the North, Midwest and the South and each has it's own attributes. It just depends on what you want your quality of life to be. For me, give me my 3 acres on the lake, in the woods, and the ability to drive peacefully (for the most part) anywhere I want to go without horns, rude drivers and deisel fumes from public transportation! I can fly to any art museum or other cultural even or location that I desire while staying warmer in the winter and being surrounded by unassuming people who live free of the big city ratrace. One more thing....history? Ever hear of the Civil War? There are some beautiful sites honoring that piece of American history in the South, no matter what side of the political fence you are on.
