If you have cut the vines loose from the roots but it is still green on the wall, there must be other connections to the ground, possibly on the other side of the wall already. Please do not spray that much stuff. What I would do is manually remove as much of it as you can, completely off of the wall if possible, down to the ground, and whatever roots you can extricate. If it's not possible to pull it off of the wall, just make sure you have severed all connections to the ground. This will force the roots to use stored energy reserves to start growing again. The foliage on the wall should die without its' roots, but may take a while to show it. When it starts growing again, put the tips of the new growth in a jar of foliage-ingested herbicide, like glyphosate. If you dig a little hole for the jar, it won't tip over. Cover with plastic wrap, leaving a hole just big enough for the vine to go in. The vines will drink poison and take it to the roots to kill the whole thing. Be sure to retrieve and properly dispose of the jar when the vine has died. The first few tips may not be enough to completely kill an established ivy vine. There may be several individual vines that are not connected at the roots. Keep hacking at it and sticking the tips in poison. This method prevents the substance from being sprayed, which can drift onto desirable plants nearby, and none is put on the ground. You could also use a cotton ball or paint brush to paint the cut stumps with a brush killer made for such purpose. Whatever product you might consider, please read and follow the label instructions.

Hi, I'm in zone 8, Las Vegas and need some help on deciding on what vines to plant on 2 walls that meet in a corner. The back wall area I want to cover is about 12' and the side wall is a little over 8' and the walls meet in the corner. Both walls are about 6' tall and are near a swimming pool. I have Queen palms, a meidterranian palm, cannas, and lantana in front of the walls but want a vine for the wall (it's cinderblock). I keep changing my mind on what I want to plant there. My original plan was Balboa Sunset Trumpet vine, but then I read trumpet vine can be very invasive and since the walls or neighbor walls I was worried about that but I love the color and flower of that vine. Then I saw a beautiful vine at a nusery called Royal Trumpet vine (different species than the Balboa Trupmpet) and loved that too but then I read it is a zone 9 plant so it most likely won't surrvive the winter here. My next thought is to plant Creeping fig and Morning Glory (Ipomoea Acuminata). I know the Creeping Fig will attach itseld to the wall and I thought I would attach wire to the wall for the Morning Glory. The Morning Glory would be covering the Creeping Fig until if dies out in the winter and then I would still have the green from the Creeping Fig. Any thoughts on if this is a good idea or not? If it's a good idea, how do I space the plants. Any other thoughts on vines for that area? Oh, I also already have tangerine crossvine that I just planted on the back wall (just past the 13' wall, I could get more of those but thought it might be better to mix it up a bit. Oh and the organic solution for creeping Charlie is to dig it out by hand. Here's the process. Start at one corner and dig out the grass down 2 inches deep. Move through and throw away everything that looks like grass, creeping Charlie, or roots. You will not finish this very quickly. Wait a week for your back to heal. When you start again, start at the same corner because something will have grown back in. Likely it will be the creeping Charlie. The area you already dug up will go much faster this second time. The keep pressing on out into the grassy/weedy area. The next week when you start again, start at the same starting point again. This time it will go even faster because you'll be able to see fewer and fewer sprouts of anything. It is very tedious, but it's organic. Once you decide that being completely organic is a great idea in theory, you can spray the Weed-G-Gone CCO or Brush Killer. Remember you aren't saturating the soil with the herbicide. You're really only wetting the leaves of the weeds themselves. When you are satisfied the weeds are out and not coming back, then restart your organic fertilizer routine. Sometimes a chemical spray is needed for your sanity.

I forgot how to do that. It was basically another one of my twisted gags. I am so glad someone gave the o.p. a Stern warning about planting Comfrey.It is very easy to plant ,but nearly impossible to get rid of. I only had it in one spot,but the rough look of the plant outweighed the other purported benefits so I decided to remove it which took 2 or three years of backbreaking,heavy shovelling.This was just one small spot it was growing in! So the thought of having a large area covered in it is overwhelming.Major machinery and manpower would be needed to remove that much Comfrey. I have been reading first hand reports from people who have grown it around fruit trees and who claim it to be a miracle elixir. I don't think any real scientific studies have been done on Comfrey's effect on fruit trees. I think maybe it has a lot to do with root structures.Comfrey has deep roots and is an accumulate plant,so would it be as beneficial for a deep rooted Meyer lemon as it would be for a shallower apple tree.Thing is I have a small garden and no room for fruit trees,but if I had a large enough lot I myself would experiment and have 2 identical fruit trees,one surrounded by Comfrey,and the other without Comfrey nearby, and then compare the trees performances over a period of years.To me,Comfrey is a little too hard on the eyes,so I won't have it in my flower beds,but I just got this cool idea to plant some next to my compost pile.First though, I should explore to make sure there isn't a small remnant of it imbedded in the weeds at the back of the yard. I heard this line Booking 14 and thought someone didn't have their morning coffee,so out of confusion I googled it and discovered it's a Comfrey cultivar.Apparantly sometimes people do know what they are talking about even when we don't think they know what they are talking about. I feel extremely humbled.Good feelings to all here.
