Fun Way to 'Peel' a cooked egg

I had added this to Glenda's post about how to cook the perfect egg. But decided to give it, it's own post.

It's so funny...I tried it. You crack each end and peel a small hole then blow the egg right out of the shell...Just pops right out..

The kids will love it.

There us also one short video about peeling the potatoe.

Dunk your boiled potatoe straight from the boiling water into an ice bath and the peeling will slide right off...I haven't tried that one yet...but together it should make a quick and easy potato salad for Easter...plus a little fun along with it.

Peter, I have an egg cooker too, I found it in the tool shed after Dad passed away and rescued it before it got broken. I haven't used it yet, I'm afraid I'll burn the house down. You can see that the element is rusty... Anyway, I didn't' jinx myself. I boiled 2 dozen eggs, all less than a week old. I put them in a big pan, covered them with cold water: Turned on the heat and brought the water to a boil, then turned the burner off and let the eggs sit for 15 minutes. I don't usually let them sit that long, but I got busy making ganache for the Boston Cream Pie, and I have my priorities, LOL, especially where chocolate is involved. I drained off the hot water and ran cold water over the eggs until they were cool enough to handle, but I had a couple of other projects, so I put them in a bowl and stuck them in my second refrigerator, aka the garage. They stayed there overnight. Sunday morning I peeled the eggs for potato salad and devilled eggs. Even after using fresh eggs, overcooking them AND letting them sit overnight, this is what I got: Was it a fluke? Nope, I did it again: I did have one "egg failure", because I dropped one of the eggs on the floor and it broke. I let Cooper have that one, although I could have peeled it and used it for potato salad, I suppose. I roll the eggs around on the counter to crack the shell all over. You can see the membrane still intact on the inside of the shell, that's how I pull the shell off in big pieces. Oh, and the air pocket is usually at the larger end of the egg, so I start peeling there, to be certain I can get the membrane off along with the shell, instead of little specks of shell. That probably doesn't help at all, but using the "roll and crack" method I seldom have trouble peeling eggs. Annie

I'm just posting my results in case anyone else comes across this--to prevent anyone from making the same mistake I did. Azzalea wrote: I think 3 dozen is too many to cook in one pot. It takes so long for the water to come up to a simmer, that it throws your cooking time off. Better to do 1- 1.5 at a time. She was right. But they were already cooking by the time I read that. I soaked them all in a pan in vinegar/water. They covered the bottom plus some on a second layer. Since that's the way smaller batches usually are I added salt and boiled them all together. They did take a long time to boil, and stuck to the shells. Sunday AM I boiled another doz. especially to use at the table. They were going to 4 different houses after Easter dinner so no problem getting used up quickly.

Ã¢ÂÂemptied the pot, put the eggs back in the dry hot pot and shook the pot vigorously till the eggs were cracked all over.Ã¢ÂÂ - This also help delaminate the membrane from the white. 5. Ã¢ÂÂ-----. I then put the cracked eggs in an icebath for 10 minutes. The shells peeled off in one piece stuck to the membrane and didn't take a single spot of white with.Ã¢ÂÂ - The smaller egg has more air space, and air shrinks in ice cold water, sucking in water along the way, and the layer of water between the membrane and egg white serves as lubricant which makes the peeling very easy. It works for me. I never do eggs any other way. The yolks are always yellow, they don't turn green from cooking to long.

You need to remember that any egg peeled this way will not be germ free. I can just see kids spitting and blowing the egg out. Be sure not to use the egg in egg salad!

Sheila, have you ever seen a kid peel an egg? Especially a dyed easter egg? They get covered in lint and fingerprints and gawd knows what else. I don't think any sane person would let the kids peel the eggs for egg salad without washing them first - if at all ROFLMAO!

I also don't picture very many people making egg salad by blowing the eggs out with their mouths. I mean, they wouldn't LICK an egg every time they peel one then put it in a bowl, would they?

Then again, I close my perogies the old fashioned way. Yep, if anybody asks how I make the edges stick, I tell them "I lick them closed like an envelope".

I kept following those threads and I can now fold my honey's t-shirts the japanese way... lol ...and about the germs on the egg blown out... Remember the old addage about having to eat a pound of dirt before you die? Sometimes I think people are TOOOOO careful. ...and yes, I would wash it first... Now to boil some eggs...

I can't watch video with my connection - but it sounds like my "eggstractor"

My dear mother gave it to me. You poke a hole in each side of the egg and put it in this device that looks like bellows. You push down and the air forces the egg out of the shell.

Well - it also shot the egg CLEAR across the room. OMG! I laughed so hard I nearly wet my pants...It was so fun!!

It was actually faster to just peel the egg the old fashioned way - but so funny to use the eggstractor :)

Okay...tonight it didn't work...but the eggs had sat until cold and they were the kind that didn't peel easy....half the egg stuck to the shell.

I was trying to show Jeff how it worked....I about blew my brains out....and they wouldn't work. Also the yolks were not as done as I like. So I think I did a better job of cooking them at lunch...and a not so good job at supper. (I was making potatoe salad for supper)

LOL at iowagirl, and a big yuck to the idea of egg salad from eggs blown out of the shell.

LOL, just having fun with you about the "e" on potato, Patti (remember when VP Quayle did that?). Couldn't resist after you did it the second time, after having caught yourself the first time. Believe me, I do that sort of thing all the time, so I can relate!

When i was a kid,I made colored eggs with uncooked eggs, then pricked holes in both ends with a pin and blew the raw egg out. I thought I was so clever. Now I know an easier way.

Patti, it IS a good thing to keep laughing, isn't it!! If I remember correctly, when he was Vice President, he visited a grade school classroom and while there, misspelled the word potato by putting an e on the end of it, and the press had a field day with it. You didn't really misspell it, as you knew the correct spelling, even came back and posted a correction. I think your finger just kept finding that "e" key for some reason. LOL.
