I use cotton thread on cotton fabric. My LQS owner gave me pretty much the same reason as above for matching cotton to cotton. She said that a poly thread was stronger, but more important had less 'give', so under tension the poly thread acted more like wire cutting into the softer cotton fabric. Cotton thread would have it's own 'give', she said, and share the tension so neither would break, and give a longer seam life in the end. Now, my OCD will show, but waxing a thread doesn't make it stronger, it prevents thread from getting weaker. Waxing smooths down the tiny little furries so they don't catch on the fabric with each pass like little velcro hooks. Waxing helps prevent the thread from wearing thin during the sewing, so you always pull thread through Thread Heaven silicone wax the same way it will be passing through the fabric. Having the furries slicked down also helps the thread not tangle so easily. Right handers thread a needle, then cut and knot the end coming off closest to the spool. That's because hand sewers typically add twist to thread as they sew, and a little overtwisted thread still handles pretty well. A left handed sewer who threads this way will be untwisting the thread as she sews, and that tangles up like a nightmare right away. A left handed sewer should try knotting the end furthest away from the spool, so her added twist will still be overtwist.

Until the prices on cotton burr compost went up in our area, it was a pretty common high quality compost sold in stores. We have some very difficult clay in many of the area soils, and this compost was known as a superior product to loosen up the soil. Because we also tend to be fighting alkaline soils, the compost is available in our area with some added sulphur to help lower the pH. gardengal hit it on the nose with her reply about nutrient content; this is a reasonable rich compost, so in our area the usual recommendation is not to put more than 3 or 4 inches compost on the soil. Note that there used to be another cotton burr product which was compost with the addition of cottonseed meal after the composting process. This stuff might very well burn plants used at the same rate as the plain compost. I haven't seen the combination product available here for several years. I prefer to make my own compost, but if circumstances prohibit someone from doing so, a compost like this is a great choice, in my opinion. Besides being an excellent soil addition, it significantly contributes to the quality of our environment by utilizing a waste stream from cotton fiber production. Another vote for LL Bean. I haven't bought any T's from them in a year or so - but unless they've changed anything in that time, they're worth a look to see if they'll work for you. Not ridiculously sheer and not unreasonably thick - just a nice solid weight. I have several colors in both V and crew neck and wear them frequently in the summer.
