Very funny! As I started to read the lyrics, I could hear Gloria Gaynor singing and I was transported back to Zelda's disco - or maybe it was Scotty's on 7th - whatever, I was dancing to the song. :-) However "Last Dance" by Donna Summer was my favorite disco hit ever!

Thanks for your confessions! I am only making some take-alongs to the meal at my daughter's house. I thought I was making such great time today as I kept looking at the clock and it was only nine thirty. I dawned on me that I've been looking at the clock all morning and it's been nine thirty each time. LOL. Not a disaster, but it would've been had I not noticed. Question, does anyone know the answer? This year the turkey's legs were bound together with a plastic tether. My DD asks me does this need to be taken out and replaced by wire or twine, or is it oven-proof? I dunno! It doesn't say on the label. I can't find it on line. I asks my husband the retired butcher. When he retired, they were still wire. He calls his brother, who is still butchering. He doesn't know, either. For goodness sakes. If the meat packing industry is going to change the routine and start sticking plastic into carcasses, shouldn't this information be in everyone's faces?

It looks to me like it's showing signs of a viral infection (yellowing dry stems & purple new growth) You could do two things; one is try and save the whole plant or, the other is start again from cuttings and forget about the old corked base. Or you could do both and try and save it and use the cuttings as back up. give your cuttings a light bleach bath before potting up. make a solution of bleach and water, about 1/2 cup to a gallon of water. Place the cuttings in this solution for about 10 minutes then rinse well. You just want it in there long enough to kill nasties, not the cuttings. Pot up in sterile soil. My guess is you watered the plant after potting it up, causing root damage and the viral infection to manifest. (about 90% of TC have viral infections waiting for poor conditions to show symptoms) It is not under watering. Underwatering would show by the new growth drying up, not the root zone. Pot your plant in one size larger, nothing more. They prefer to have tight toes. Do not pot you plant in plastic, they need clay for the roots to breathe. They also need a well draining soil. They live like orchids in the wild and orchid soil is an excellent medium. AV soil like PG suggested is also good, use a chunky substance like fired clay pellets (LECA) and perlite to lighten the mix. Any soil you pick has to drain within minutes, with no pockets of water. They like to be drenched, then left to dry then drenched again. maybe twice a week this time of year, to maybe once or twice a month in winter. Wait at least a week before watering after potting up, this gives the feeder roots time to heal.

No fancy preparations here. Heat with wood...use a propane campstove when I have to. We did plan on this by having backup gas heat that does not require electricity. I keep a 20 qt. stock pot on the woodstove for "washing up." Oil lamps, candles, lanterns, and an Aladin lamp keep us in light. We are both Ham Radio operators, so we have communication until the batteries run down on the hand-helds.... after that we have the radios in the vehicles in case of emergency. Our phones used to go out about 2 hours after the power failed...phone company finally fixed that problem. Mainly, I watch for signs of wet snow or ice and fill large stockpots with clean water and the bathtub with water for flushing. I make huge pots of stew and hearty soups in the winter and always freeze a few quarts...just in case. Keep some milk in freezer and since I bake my own bread, I nearly always have extra in the freezer. Most often when we loose electricity it is not extremely cold...wet snow and ice come at temps that just barely make freezing and slightly below. We were out of power for 6 days once...when it came it was barely cold enough to freeze down here on the lake, but 12 inches of wet snow fell in the surrounding area. The power crews ended up working in their shirt sleeves before the week was over. Back then the problem was 11.5 miles of rocky, hilly roads. Three of us with 2 chainsaws spent 2 hours cutting and dragging to get half way out before meeting others trying to cut their way in to feed cattle. Now we have Air Ambulance service, so a little less concern for our older, less healthy neighbors. That was 20 years ago...now the County shows up with a snow blade and salt for the bad spots. Hard to believe how much change has come about. The down side is that it took developement, and more permanent residents to make it happen.

Very funny - in retrospect of course. Your story reminds me of the year my turkey was cooking very well until I opened the oven door to baste, only to find that the oven died. DH rushed the turkey over to my inlaws to finish cooking. Sides were modified to cook on the stove top and grill. However, that year was a breeze compared to the Thanksgiving that we required a visit from our local fire department. I am still trying to block that particular memory. LOL Thank you for sharing your story. I always try to remember my mom's mantra: when God gives you lemons, make lemonade!

I have both Gaynor and Summer on vinyl. Still have my turntable and we were talking a few weeks back about having a vinyl party. I think it would be a blast....maybe serve some retro foods from back in the day.

I posted those lyrics onto my Facebook page, and one of my girlfriends swears she is going to sing them at her family's Thanksgiving dinner with her 12 year old daughter. That should be a memory!

Thanks for the reposting, Alexa. I still sing that every year too! :)

I'm just reading through last night's postings while I wait for DH. We're about to take off heading to NY for my EMG (hey, hey, I will survive!) & some other tests. I won't be around tomorrow...they are incarcerating me for a couple days & I will be licking my "wounds". It's such a fun test. They stick you with 150 needles, hook you up to a battery, then flip the switch to see if you twitch! (I wonder if they're going to pump Cajun seasoning through those needles before they "fry" me? lol) So, this is a good opportunity for me to say, HAPPY TURKEY DAY, everybody!
