FG is the only one left on my subscription list, and that largely due to their excellent index, pronunciation guide and on-line back-up. . . Jackie, YOU have touched on something that I find really stimulating - catalogs.....many years ago, they were pretty lame compilations of seed and/or plant lists, frequently with drawings instead of photos. With so much competition today, glossy catalogs have really come into their own; I often wonder if White Flower Farm started this whole trend, for at one time their catalogues were not only a joy to look at, but also to read (much less so today) and loaded with interesting garden information. Then, there's the late, lamented Heronswood catalogues, which were such classics that I think a lot us of hoarded them; and we still have Tony Avent's gorgeous (and delightfully off-the-wall) catalogue from Plant Delight's. Over the past few years, I've taken to ordering (it's so easy online) a few new catalogs each year, just to get me through the winter, and have often discovered wonderful new sources as a bonus. Try the David Austin Roses catalog (stunning) or even pay for the always valuable one from Fairweather Gardens. . . Carl

Great thread! Glad to know others share my problem! I didn't realize how bad my problem was until I packed them up for the remodel into boxes and saw how much cubic footage they claimed. I have cooking magazines that go back to '99 and I accumulated probably a 100 kitchen & bath mags during the last year planning and executing the remodel. Even though I'm pretty much done, I still find myself looking at the racks in stores. In my defense, I do sit down and go through all the Oct/Nov/Dec cooking mags every year about October to pick out things I want to cook during the holidays that year. Some recurring favorites, some experiments. I find myself doing that in the spring/summer too, looking for recipes for fresh, seasonal food. My problem with clipping the recipes is that I want to keep the pics, too. Anyway, I wanted to say thanks for the scanning idea, Suzy. I intend to work on getting my office and guest room back into shape this weekend converting them back to functional space from them from my temporary remodel storage. I think I'm going to go scanner shopping first! And I might try just the ad removal for the holiday issues.

In the past, I was a real magazine junkie. But over the past few years, I have really cut back. My daughter enjoys National Geographic so we still get that one and my son asked for Nat Geo Kids so we will subscribe to that one as well. I just got a really smashing great offer for Smithsonian and so will probably subscribe to it as well. Used to subscribe to Cottage Living but stopped when I realized that every "cottage" re-do was done by an architect and his artist wife, a lawyer and his antiques dealer wife, a doctor and his interior decorator wife and that the "cottages" were usually about 3000 to 5000 square feet in size. Not my idea of a "cottage". The magazine went under. I was not surprised. Although I will say that my most favorite part of that magazine was the back page where a reader sent in a photo of his or her home and an architect/designer did a lovely sketch of the home "cottage-d up". Wish I could get his name and send him a picture of my house. I love Bookmarks and must resubscribe but then I stop and look at the lists of titles I have written down from each issue of Bookmarks. I will never get through all of my TBR lists... let alone read magazines as well! How do you all find the time?! A note on the fundraising sales. My sister bought a mag from my daughter during a fundraising drive. The magazine title was switched on her from a travel magazine to a fishing magazine with no prior warning. And because she bought it through a clearing house, she had no recourse. The travel mag went under and the clearing house substituted something of similar value without consulting her. PAM

Cricket is all short story writing pieces, (fiction and non-fiction) and not particularly compelling, IMHO. (As a teacher I subscribed for a year but since it was "meh" I quit.) Cobblestone was more interesting to me, but I don't think for my granddaughter. My grandson loves history, but he's getting something else . . . ) I loved a lot of the books on the "Mighty Girl" list, but they were so specific, like "How to Deal With Teen Anxiety." Great topic but who wants to get that for Christmas! I really liked the "American Girl" series, but again, so specific. I wish there was a compendium of "best of" for that. I liked the Teen survival guide, but it is really text-dense, like a visit with a therapist. I'd rather get a book that covers other topics too, not just emotions and drama. Some of the reviews mentioned how intense it was. Not that it wouldn't be wonderful help for my granddaughter, but just not Christmas present material, IMHO. Maybe I should just pick three of these small American Girl Guides. I like the idea behind the title, not sure if the essays are appealing or not to a teen. Edited to add what do y'all think of this? I wonder if it could be colored in too . . . Personally, I like the magazine.
Healthy meals, might have to go purchase this months as I see on the website they have a lower fat pumpkin bread recipe.

I think they do that because they can't handle multiple delivery addresses on the same order - likely what you'd want in the case of a mag. Just go in and order again.

I'm laughing, FOAS. I'm trying to get rid of old magazines and you post this steal. My mother just asked me if I wanted another subscription for Cook's Illustrated for Christmas, and I passed (love to read it, never cook from it.) I'll tell her she can give me this instead:) She says "THANKS!!!", and so do I!

PS As an aside, I used to get this magazine and found some of the ingredients too "one time use." I picked it up at the orthodontist the other day and was pleasantly surprised!

I like Cooking Light and a couple of my favorite recipes have come from them. I'm trying to cut down the magazines I get, but now, I'm going to have to think about this...

I used to subscribe and got a little annoyed by the ever-growing spa and beauty section, so stopped. Someone gave me a couple of the most recent issues, and I was VERY pleasantly surprised to see they went back to their focus.

Y'all are my "Cooking Light!
I got the magazine for a lot of years....but it got to much spa and beauty...so I dropped it.
But my DIL loves it....and maybe my daughter would too...
For $5 it's cheaper than buying her a margarita at lunch!!

Thanks. I just placed an order for 2 subs - one for me, one for my daughter-in-law who loves to cook.

Thanks, I ordered one for myself and 2 for gifts. I had cancelled mine sometime ago for the same reason several have mentioned but at any rate it'll be worth 5 bucks.
