frontline plus question

i treated my dogs on march 15 after finding two ticks on ashley, my great dane.

today i come home and the first thing i see on the rug just inside the kitchen door is a tick. not a little tick. this was a fully engorged tick that fell off one of the dogs. it was still alive.

i know frontline doesn't repel ticks but i thought once a tick bit the dog, it died. period.

am i wrong?

They don't die after engorging. If they did, they would all die after feeding!

i looked at the frontline website. their claim is that when a tick bites a treated dog, the tick dies. i assume this would mean the tick died BEFORE it gets engorged with blood from the dog.

obviously, this tick has been on a dog for at least 2 or 3 days or more. i checked the expiration date on the packages before i used them because they were left over from last fall and they had not yet expired.

so, why did this tick not die once it bit??

There is a generic version of both Frontline and Frontline Plus, aka Fiproguard and Fiproguard Plus. The "plus" is an added ingredient that is a breeding inhibitor for fleas, however fipronil (primary ingredient in all these medications) will kill both fleas and ticks. Personally I have good luck with just plain fipronil (Fiproguard) without the added ingredient for my two dogs, but flea populations here are not too bad. A lot depends on where you live. Fipronil takes 24 hours to kill ticks, but that is soon enough to prevent them from transmitting Lyme disease. The ticks just pull off or fall off. The generic is cheaper, and online is cheaper, but any of these meds are equally effective, regardless of where you buy them, providing they have a valid expiration date. O.K. How do you split it? Like I have two dogs that are 55 lbs. and 9 1/2lbs. Are you saying buy the one for the bigger dog and split it or what? I'm not quite sure I understand. Would I not o.d. my smaller dog and u.d my larger dog? Please explain. I am all for saving money and find this interesting, and if it would work would be willing to try it as long it wouldn't hurt.

There is nothing in frontline plus that is lethal to a cat... just don't make the same mistake with Advantix (often confused for Advantage which is safe for cats), which does have a very toxic product that can make cats very sick.

Frontline is very expensive and has always worked for the 20 years I have been using it. I have flea bombed my house twice now, washed every single piece of material blankets sheets pillow cases clothes, and put Frontline on my dog and sprayed our yards twice now, front and back and we still have fleas. I want my money back for the Frontline. I don't know what you guys have changed in your product but it doesn't work anymore. My dog hasn't had fleas in 7 years but my mom brought over a dog that did have fleas and now for two and a half months I've been trying to get rid of them and can't. I have given my dog two doses of Frontline between his shoulder blades and I have bombed my house twice washed every single thing that can fit in the washer or the dishwasher or I wash it in the sink including my laundry. I mean it seems like every fast food restaurant. You have a quality product and then you start cheapening it and cut cost and now their food is shit and now your product is also. And the Frontline is not working. The house was nice and flea free but the dog is still scratching. And then those fleas jump on me. I think it is your responsibility to backup your product and contact me. I mean you absolutely obviously change something in your product so it doesn't work anymore but you still charge the same price. I cannot keep affording to throw away a hundred and something dollars on a product that doesn't work. Please contact me. Maybe the ticks get immune to the meds like fleas. I was freaking out oo when my dog who is on flea meds kept getting fleas on her...and I know they were biting her becuase I found flea dirt.

I have no idea myself, but my Frontline Plues packs just arrived from Amazon yesterday and I'm planning on treating both my furkids this afternoon. I was under the impression this stuff would repel and kill fleas and ticks. I'll check back here to see if someone in-the-know can answer your question.

In my opinion.

Frontline plus dog flea control just wasn't doing a good job and had such a strong odor that lingers for a week. Then I tried Advantage by Bayer and it works wonders, plus it has hardly any scent. Seems like it cost slightly more but so well worth it. I always check the expiration date to before I buy flea control.

Has anyone else noticed the difference?

Maybe it hadn't bit your dog since the frontline was applied. There are a number of scenarios as to why you might find a live tick in your home.

I have two cats and a dog. I use Frontline on all of them and I have never seen a tick or a flea in my home.

Lynn, Frontline does not repel fleas. It kills them, their larvea and renders their eggs infertile so more don't hatch.

According to the Frontline website, it kills "up to 100% of ticks within 48 hours" so it is very possible for a tick to become engorged before it dies.

If you want a faster tick-killing product, then I would use the PrevenTic collar. It has amitraz so you have to be careful about touching the collar yourself, or having kids or other pets touch or lick it. But it works really well. One collar lasts 3 months. I know people who just put it on their dogs when they go outside or to certain parks and they are happy with it. I haven't used i myself.

The tick probably disenganged itself from the dog because it was getting ready to die. Give it a couple days and see if its still alive... :-)

I smile because I would have incinerated it before check to see how long it lives.
