My two cent cut-and-pasted reply to a previous post regarding my own experience taking plants when moving: Regarding taking the plants, been there, done that, would do it again but only in limited form. Next time I move I'm only taking plants that are hard to replace, either because difficult to find and/or very expensive to replace (e.g. I have a couple beautiful mature laceleaf Japanese maples and a stunning mature tree peony that would cost a fortune to replace, if I could even find one that big for sale), and plants that have sentimental value. Other than that - it stays. Reason I say this is because last time I moved I took all I could - I dug up pretty much all of my perennial beds and rose bushes. Guess what? Off the top of my head, besides a laceleaf Japanese maple and one peony that I took with me, I can't think of any plant that moved with me that is in my garden at the current time. There are various reasons, but the two main reasons are soil and light conditions different than what the plants required - a general statement of failure to thrive, if you will - and the plants didn't fit into what I was trying to create at this place. And oh the guilt I initially had when I had to trash a lot of plants after a year or so of keeping them in temporary locations, realizing they just wouldn't work. I found homes for some of them, but tossed the bulk. (I've since gotten over the guilt of shovel pruning over the years....) Plus, it was a lot of hassle, and there is an expense. Don't forget pots and potting soil cost money, even those 99 cent plastic pots add up. The headache comes in when you have to actually do something with all those plants. I kept all the pots of stuff in a temporary holding area, but what a pain to have to keep with the watering, not to mention it was so messy with stuff all over the place, and the stress of knowing I had to do something with all those plants grated at me. Of course, if you move to a place where there are nice beds mapped out or you have a vision right off the bat of what you'd like to create, that would make thing easier, but realistically how often does that happen? So, my advice is take what is valuable or sentimental and leave the rest. View it is an opportunity to start fresh, to create something beautiful and unique that relates to this new chapter in your life.

Pam - I see you saw my comments on the rudbecka Rustic not-really-dwarf mix on the other thread. For folks who missed that, the 1/8 oz pack at Swallowtail (in their annual seeds section) contains about 3000-4000 seeds so that actually beats the prices on most of what they offer in their bulk section. The Swallowtail bulk section is always worth checking, but sometimes they also have wickedly huge seed packets at low prices in their regular section. Some of my faves there include: California poppies at 4500 seeds for $2.49 - $2.95 depending on type. Strawflowers, 5000 seeds for $2.49 Cosmos, 1300 seeds for $1.95 Foxgloves Excelsior hybrids at 20,000 seeds (yes, no typo) for $2.95 but currently out of stock. (But you could get 2500 seeds from ValueSeed.com for $0.99 if you need a bunch right now.) They've got some other bargains in there too but those are my favorites. Their xeranthemum and paper daisies have bargain packs but I wasn't impressed with the flowers or plants - especially when compared to their tall strawflower mix. That tall strawflower mix is a real winner. I didn't know they were as hardy as they were - my plants were green and flowering into the beginning of December here. In your area you might still have them blooming at Christmas. Another of my favorites is Helenium Autumanale - especially after seeing it as Bluestone's Perennial's cover flower in last year's catalog. I bought a pack from the bulk section at Swallowtail - 1000 seeds for just under $10. I got those in late May last year. The germinated fast (and with a very high germination rate), transplanted well, many bloomed the first year and I got a nice seed farm level of seed out of those. Helenium flowers are gorgeous with a lot of variety. They blow in the breeze in a super pretty way. I don't think it's possible to take a bad photo of them. I ended up hositing a photo group on Flickr just for helenium flowers because they are so beautiful. They are even super easy and fun to seed save from - seeds pop right off without fuss. AND they are long lived and perennial to zone 3. Oh, and they propagate easily by division so that once you have a favorite color you can divide it and make a garden full of clones if you like. I also think that they are likely to be a hot item for gardenweb seed and plant trading. Unless everyone who reads this ends up growing their own. :) Lynda Here is a link that might be useful: Slideshow from Flickr Helenium group

I really do appreciate your post treehugger because I have just Come back inside after finding a perfect spot in front of a bed Of long-term heritage seed Shasta Daisies. This bed is beside the gunite pool and it has the right clay/soil/sand Mix for the coneflowers to be transplanted into. They will remain there As long as they survive in a row 16-18"apt for the space between Flowers.I have already dug up abt 1/2 the length of the row. They will get full sun,but in south Alabama that can mean(almost )Texas Hot! But we are on the gulf plain and get lots of rain. Zinnias grow well here if they are not flooded out earlier on. I grow the most heavy stem and tall Zinnia I can find so large Butterflies like Tigers can land on a flower that will not bend over. I will ease the cones from their abt 10" plastic pots with their potting mix Kept around them and settle them in with gentle watering;we have well Water( no chemicals). I will probably have to dig more than one bed but that's ok. I have wanted coneflowers because I have the wild sunflowers Also I have grown the tall Mexican Tithonia with good results. So thanks again for the "Try this" DD
