Torn ACL or general lameness

Hi all, I am new to this board and have some info I would like to offer just in case you were to get this diagnosis. It would be nice to be able to just trust that your vet is right. However, it is unfortunate but we have to be informed, educated, ask questions and get 2nd and some times 3rd opinions.

My dog was diagnosed with a torn ACL in Sept. and I was told she needed surgery right away. Because two vets in the same practice gave a different diagnosis (one said the limping was from ticks) I got concerned and did some internet research. I found a group that does "conservative managment" which is restricting activity and letting the body heal itself. Many times can be very successful. I also took her for another opinion elsewhere. That vet said she didn't think it was a torn ACL but maybe meniscal damage and wanted to do exploratory surgery. She really wasn't qualified so I went to a "specialist" (who I later found out has a terrible reputation for screwing up surgeries). He said she had a torn ACL, hip problems, and spinal problems and recommended surgery right away. We then went to a holistic vet to try prolotherapy.

To try to make a long story shorter she started having swelling problems and I took her to yet another vet. After six months I finally found out that she did not have a torn ACL and probably never did. She had BONE CANCER. Her femur was totally eaten away. We got lots of pain meds to give us a couple of days to say our goodbyes and put her to sleep 3 days later. I found out from a few others on a bone cancer site that some vets will check to rule out bone cancer first any time there is sudden lameness. Just a thought to pass along in case you ever get the diagnosis of torn ACL. It would be worthwhile to check for cancer before surgery.
