Koi question: could Meatball be a girl?

Ok, I admit it, I'm a sexist. I just assumed, based on size and coloration, that my koi, Meatball, was male. (S/he was one of the biggest fish in the $10 pool at the pond shop, has a shiny pewter body with a white face and a big red spot on the top of his/her head.)

This morning I noticed that Meatball was looking pretty thick around the middle, though his/her tail area is still slim. The bulge is symmetrical, so I'd guess it's not a tumor. Is this a sign that a blessed event is drawing near? Is there anything special that I should do?

A couple of years ago someone in the pond had babies, of whom 4 survived to increase the school to a dozen. Unfortunately, fish don't tell you much about this sort of thing.

Meatball is about 9-10" long and about 2.5" thick/high in profile. Viewed from above, s/he has gone from about 1.5" thick at the abdomen to at least 2" or a little more.
