WOW!!! Coming right along. The potatoes corn and flowers look great. You're putting pigs there next year? My daughter had her yearly pig roast this week-end over two hundred people were there. About fifty of them spent the night. They were all there for bteakfast. I didn't spend the night even though I live fifty miles away.

I'm hoping to have pigs next April. Looking forward to ham for christmas. Probably not ham (curing involved) but pork roast.

* holding their tails like males do * Hi, Eric, I've been enjoying reading about your ducks on this thread and others. I've been looking over the pics and trying to figure out how the males are holding their tails different. I got 6 Rouen ducklings on March 17 and having a great time with them. I kept them in a large storage box in the kitchen until a few days ago when I built a pen in the garage. Since its still pretty cold here in IL, I put the heat lamp back on them. Will that be enuf for those few days ahead when the temps dips to freezing? I have been taking them outside every afternoon for a while to wander around and swim in our little pond. They have grown so fast and are getting too fast to catch when I want to bring them in. In one thread you mentioned whistling when you want to bring them in at nite. I've tried to get them to follow me by holding out lettuce leaves but its not working. Since I can't whistle, what else can I do to bring them in? Its pretty hard to herd them by myself. Lynn, The water feature is a stream bed and pond dug out of the dirt, then layered with a liner protector and a very large rubber liner (made for ponds/streams). At the top of the stream bed, higher than the stream to create a waterfall effect, there is what is called a bio-falls box/waterfall. At the end of the pond there is a skimmer (that sucks the water back up with a pump). The water is plumbed underneath the stream bed, so that it goes back to the waterfall box... round and round it goes. On top of the liner, there is riverbed gravel, riverbed rocks and very large rocks to line the pond with. This is very intensive work, not to even mention the plumbing part. If you have never done a pond/stream (with fill valves et al), I wouldn't make this my first project. You may want to hire someone to put it in for you. You can buy kits on-line if you're feeling industrius, but it is A TON of digging. Find someone who specializes in AquaScape (company name of a certian type of waterfall system that works great). If you live anywhere near Arlington, I would highly recommend (which those words do NOT come lightly out of my mouth - I am VERY picky, to the extreme) Prime Landscape. They didn't install my system, but have helped me trouble shoot and do clean outs. VERY, VERY patient, detail oriented and CAREFUL with and around my daylilies. The beds are mulched with extra fine ground hard wood mulch. I use the fine ground because it degrades faster than the regular hardwood - which I found took all of the nitrogen from the soil. Now, when I mulch, especially if it is a new bed, I amend the soil with compost, then put down a 1"-2" layer of compost on the top, then put down blood meal (or any other 100% nitrogen fertilizer) and then put the mulch. The extra nitrogen helps to break down the bottom side of the mulch (good for the soil), and keeps the nitrogen in the soil, in the soil (for the plants). Hope this helps,

Thank you everyone.. The floor is concrete stamping and hardwood around that. When my dh built the house himself and no his isn't a builder. I met him when the house was just finishing up. He actually instead of flowing the hardwood through the kitchen in his mind it was here is the kitchen let's outline it.. LOL He laid tile in it. But due to the fact we are a concrete company - he decided last year the broken tile had ton come up. Beleive me I begged for the hardwood to go throughout. But then we decided what the heck let's try the stamp able overlay in the kitchen. Kinda a testi..we always do stamp able overlays on slabs, lets test it on plywood. Its held uo good for the past year. Iam just tickled pink I got to paint the cabinets and do my thing. Again thank you everyone fornyour kind words. Carol

thanks maggiebkit. yes, they are inset but i omitted the rail between the drawers so that I could have a little bit more interior space inside my drawers. The 3 drawer banks on either side of the range have 3 equal sized drawers (rather than shallow, deep, deep) because I wanted the top drawer to the left of the range to have a 2 tier cutlery divider. When you open the drawer it looks like a normal cutlery divider drawer but if you push the drawer forward, there is a section below lined with pacific cloth and with little slots for my sterling silver. I have never had easy access to my sterling and therefore haven't used it much even though it is the most beautiful pattern I could imagine. It will be really nice having it handy. The 3 equal sized drawers will be nice I think as I am not sure I really needed the extra height for my colanders and tupperware, bread, etc. that are going in these other drawers. Across the aisle in my peninsula I have a 3 drawer bank with the top drawer being shallow for utensils and the two below it being deeper for my pots and pans.

cool! i'm envious and enjoying this series, a labor of love i can tell...are those flowers volunteers or did you add them?

i can't wait to see your pigs...DH did the grow-your-own-pig thing years ago and wants to do it again, he thinks i'll enjoy the experience...told him i won't go to the auction and when he gets 'em he has to hide them behind the barn 'cause if he makes me look at one i'll have to touch it and then i'll have to name it and then it's a pet and he will NOT be puttin' a pet on my table...thought i had him til he said he'd get a runt for me to keep

When I ordered cover crop seed from Peaceful Valley, they through in free seed. It's different flower seed mixes.

You are so lucky to have the space for your farming. Michigan used to be farm land but Urban Blight took over and now where farms used to be we have supercenters,subdivisions amd mobile home parks. Our dairys have become co-ops. I miss Michigan.

Are you guys slaughtering your piggies yourself? I couldn't do that, but I guess they'd still have a much better life than pigs from the big "farms".

I really understand that you couldn't look at them and then eat them later. I can't even eat animals that I didn't know or name. I am keeping my fingers crossed that my DD (who just turned 3 last week) will stick to a vegetarian diet.
It would be nice to have a few chicken for happy chicken eggs and maybe sheep for the milk and wool, but they'd have to die of old age...;-)
