Like lyban asks on the pink thread, how is the progress on your little stone cottage coming along?

Oh, sorry Lyban, I missed that.

The stone cottage is virtually done. I was waiting on some backordered rods but other than that, it was done in early December.

I haven't done a "reveal" yet, waiting for that detail, and also I thought I might wait until it's spring and we have some vines and flowers etc.

We are very happy with it. I did learn a lot by "GCing" this little project. We had great workers. Skilled, caring, careful, talented and very dedicated. Bad weather, weekends, whatever. And still it took 3 months for this tiny building, and a lot of money. We paid at an hourly rate that was very fair, but the fact is, I chose things that are custom, time consuming and difficult. The details, which I love, can run up the costs tremendously, but they also "make" the project. Sometimes when I see what people pay for projects, or whole houses, I feel like my eyeballs are being gouged. While that is still true, I can now better understand why apparently similar projects can cost a ton more if you want special detailing.

What was satisfying was paying the laborers themselves. We were so happy with their work ethic and work product, the overruns didn't pain me so much. I was left with the feeling that I paid just what it cost to get what I want, and who can argue with that.

Wow! May I inquire, what are your off-season rates? I'm sure I cannot afford a high season lakeside vacation at Le Chalet Petit Pierre.

Thanks for all the feedback! GottaGarden: This place is in Gloucester, MA -- hence the ubiquitous granite. On paper it's in zone 6, although I think there are several microclimates even within the borders of our property. Catkim: I agree, I hate those ugly plastic chairs. I found a set of 4 super-cute old metal bistro chairs at a thrift store last year, which I'm going to use on the patio once I paint them -- I'm thinking a nice deep red would look nice but I welcome suggestions. They would be out there now but I stupidly tried to remove all the old paint myself instead of taking them to an auto body shop or something. I probably did 10 coats of paint stripper each, plus too many hours of both hand and electric sanding, and they still have paint in the more hard-to-reach crevices. So at this point I'm just giving up and painting the damned things, assuming they're not covered in rust after spending the winter sealed in big plastic bags. I also need to find a table and get an umbrella that matches. I actually have charged admission before -- for the past 3 years we've had a big party in late June; the first one was after one of the 5-year storms and there were rocks all over the yard. I told everyone that they could not have a beer until they brought me a rock that was at least the size of their fist. It worked pretty well. Amazon: I hesitate to put up an arbor because (and none of you would have known this) there is an excellent view of the yard and the water from our bathroom window, and I'm afraid of spoiling the view if I cover the patio. I also am not sure an arbor would do well in that spot -- the wind blows heavy and constant on that patio, so much so that it's often rather unpleasant to sit out there. But I do realize that the patio needs more definition, and maybe I should reconsider the arbor idea. I was going to try making a container garden of the patio, putting taller plants around the edges, especially at the corners, to create a wall of sorts. I also want to put a wooden bench and maybe a chaise or something among the containers, to encourage more lounging in that area. Of course, I will need to figure out how to water the containers during the week. Actually, there is sort of an interesting story for why the house was built so close to the ocean. The estate was built in the early '20s by Arthur Leonard, who was a big name in the glory days of the Chicago stockyards. Apparently Mr. Leonard had something of an ego, and he intentionally built his house dangerously close to the water -- I guess it was in some fit of machismo, to show that he wasn't afraid of the ocean, or to imply that he could afford to fix the place if it was run through with water. Which of course it was, practically every year. By the early 70's, no one was really using the house regularly and it was such a financial burden to keep fixing it that the family decided to have it torn down. It pains me to say it, but the cottage that's left is headed in that direction. To be honest with you it's something of a money pit, and eventually we will have to sell the place unless one of us starts making seven figures.

Hello Mayblooms! Welcome to the Cottage Garden!! I wrote an incredibly long post to you earlier this evening and when I went to post it, Garden Web told me I had to LOG IN! Oh Boy. It's pretty difficult for me to type, so I can't do it over. I'll just say to you what everyone else pretty much has, already. Start small. Start with the places that you'll see most often, either when your outside or when you're looking out the windows. Plan for winter scenes since most perennials die back to the ground in winter. Work your soil with compost and composted manure before you ever buy a plant. You want it to smell earthy and be easy to dig in with just your fingers. Start with a small area and build it bigger from there if you wish, over the years it will all come together. Yes, I said years. Don't keep looking for the end result because the reality is, it will never come. Not if you are a true gardener anyway. There is always something to tweak, something to move, something to rejuvenate. The most important thing is to ENJOY THE JOURNEY! Plan well so you don't have to re-do. If you feel overwhelmed with all the space, think of your yard as as a beautiful park and see the sky in the background as the fence your going to plant along. It really helps and it really will look like a beautiful park one day. I live on a cattle ranch, where there is a lot of open space. I understand where you are right now. The first FULL YEAR I lived here all I did was observe, the sun and shade at all times of day in all seasons, the deer and squirrels, their paths and hang-outs, the weather and it's extremes and the micro climates in the yard. Where the wind blew around buildings and things and also where it was blocked. It was the best spent year I could have given myself as a gardener. I really learned what was going to work and what wasn't, before I ever lifted so much as a finger. I also planned. One by one the images of what I really really wanted our place to look like came to me. I planned for years into the future, during that year so going it a step at a time when I finally started, really did work well. Right now is a perfect time to start that. Best wishes, MeMo

Hey guys, just following up. Thanks everyone for your input. TheFoxesPad, i very much imagine a similar use .. for me or my kids! A few general obeservations: 1. I am thinking more about tying it to our house, and to my surprise that means white trim 2. There is a part of our house, a small room off the living room, with very similar dimensions. It is stone about 6.5 ft up then clerestory. It has a gable roof. 3. Before our reno, the house has a very lovely little solarium at the side entrance. We had to demo it to make a mudroom and craftroom (believe me I hated doing it). My DH save the Marvin french doors and oversized windows. We'd love to use them, although whatever facade gets them will really change in character, so still mulling it 4. I want to emphasize its garden setting and path as much as the pond 5. The contractor says if we use too much glass it will be very hot in a stone house ... 6. Decided against post and beam, too much visual weight for the space. Probably shiplap ceiling, painted. Floor should be tile --- maybe antiqued saltillo 7. Our house has a cedar shake roof. Thinking we should copy it although I like tin or even copper too. 8. I think we will put in a sofa bed for those adult guests who want to stay there, and a small loft with a window for the kids as a reading nook. When we have narrowed done more decisions I will post again for input. In the meantime, thanks!

We had Scherr's paint them. I got Scherr's to give me couple of quotes, unpainted, primed only and fully painted. It just wasn't that much more to have them painted in the big scheme of things. I am glad we did. I've painted primed cabinets before. I got a much better finish. One thing that you need to know is they use a catalyzed varnish finish. While it's color matched, it has a slightly different cast due to the way the light hits it. It is much sturdier than basic paint. So, be sure to get any directly adjacent trim painted by them, too. I had a piece of trim a the top that was hand painted. It was noticeable if you looked at it really closely. The rest of my trim was separated by drywall and you didn't notice the difference with the drywall separation. The only way you would get an exact match is to use the same paint product on both. Small, but noticeable if you really look. It was a really good experience. We enjoyed putting them together.

What a lovely little stone cottage you've built; and how nice to hear of skilled craftsmen taking pride in their work and being appreciated. Can't wait for the interior shots when you're ready to share those. Thank you for posting the nighttime exterior photo. It looks like a painting. In fact, transferred to canvas, this would make a wonderful work of art -- the kind of thing your girls would always treasure.

Oakley, LOL. At the holidays, we still send photo cards with the kids. We can do that until they are grumpy preteens I suppose?

LOL, Schoolhouse. I actually think we got the proportions a little wrong for the exterior, but it got us what we wanted on the interior (always the trick!)

Lazy, maybe when the weather gets warm we will set up some easels and paint plein air! I havent done that since college...

Three, Ha! No, this is a little stone building that was on the property when we bought it, but we raised the roof to make it in to a playhouse for our girls.

Maire -- Yes, they have had sleepovers there. It is 100 steps from there to our pool, which is also where the bathroom is. They loved it! I would stay there too but the heat we have in there was not as toasty as id like.

Java - It IS a very romantic spot!

Especially since, per DH, the whole place (with its Q sleeper sofa and double loft mattress), will have to be razed, once they are old enough for boyfriends.

My nephews live in a mountain resort area in.NC and their architect father has completely renovated an old train caboose for them. Itis perfect in every detail--- took a year to refurbish, sleeps five, has electricity and lights and a microwave for nuking popcorn, etc but no actual cooking. It is actually higher up the mountain on land they own that the boys can easily bike to. The kids really enjoy it---but I told their parents they'll have to padlock it in a few years as nephews are now 13 and 11. Our barn was a similar teen hangout :-)

In re the soon-to-be-arriving boyfriends, maybe someone can invent a low-voltage electrical device that can be implanted in upholstery, mattresses and rugs that delivers a small shock when it detects a Y-chromosome over an area larger than a teen-aged boy's behind ... ?

Maybe you can install a small camera and if you see something you do not like you can come out with a large blow horn! That should scare them! haha

Then you can tell them "I am always watching"
