Bringing the meal with me!

We're going to my FILs home for TG.

His wife died a few years ago, and didn't do much cooking for a couple of years before that!

It is VERY challenging to figure out what might be in his kitchen (haven't been there for a year or more)

The closest store to him has parking problems even during non-holiday times, so I'm trying to do all of the shopping here at home (including picking all of my fresh herbs/veges)

I'm even bringing a lot of my own kitchen gadgets to make my cooking experience the best.

I haven't heard from the other relatives if they are bringing anything or not! This might be a GOOD thing!

Nancy, I had similar experiences when we went to my MIL's for TDay. She had not done a TDay dinner in some time, & when she did, it was always the same meal. I would open spice/herb boxes/jars & there was no scent.

Good for you for doing it - it's a challenge & rather fun to figure out how/what to do. ...And guarantees you a good meal or two. (smile)

A few years back, my grand son got out of the hospital the evening before Thanksgiving. My son and his family came and we cooked, sauteed, mashed etc and loaded it all in the car and drove the almost 50 miles to her house. She set the table and we had Thanksgiving!
It'll happen....maybe not as you would have done it at your home....but it will be family....and that's cause for thanks.

OK corn meal is used as a fungicide and very very mild fertlizer because the protien content is so low. So in essence cornmeal is just a fungicide and not much of a fertlizer. Corn Glutten meal on the other hand is both a premergence and fertilizer. If spread at 10 pounds per 1000/ft2 makes for a very good fertlizer. If spread at a rate of 20 pounds has some limited preemergence.

I would suspect that indeed some critter, came around and walked on your garlic trying to figure out where the good smell was coming from. I wouldn't worry about the bent over tops, those plants will go ahead and crop for you. I think they would like you to put a few sticks around them to hold their tops up, they'd feel better and maybe do some repair work. I got a little too enthusiastic hoeing out some weeds a few weeks ago and chopped the tops right off two nice plants, can't fix THAT problem, but now they have put out some new leaves and don't look all that bad. They won't be as big at harvest time, that's all. Yours may not be hurt much at all. I recently came across some notes from a garden lecture that said the alliums like lots of minerals, so I went out and sprinkled some Planters II. I usually give my garlic and also my brassicas some sulfur, since it tends to be a bit short here, and I like these foods to have a good bite to them. And one thing you may not be able to do, but it's saved us from low nitrogen situations, is use diluted urine. I can guarantee it won't bring cats around! Our garden is way out in the sticks, we have no plumbing out there, so we have a pee bucket. In winter it goes on compost heaps, but in summer it goes on anything I think needs a boost of nitrogen. I did it in town too, but discretely, after we had two dump trucks of leaves plowed into our garden and wound up with a terrible N deficiency. Everything I planted just turned yellow and sat there till they got some nitrogen. They'd turn green for two weeks and grow, then I'd have to dose them again. We got through that summer without having to use any chemical fertilizer (some 6-6-6 would have fixed the problem immediately) and the next year we had the most beautiful black dirt and the nitrogen was available again.

Sharon: THANK YOU FOR THOSE FANTASTIC PICTURES !! I also did red-cabbage test today Sat. 7/25/20. Distilled water boiled in red cabbage is actually acidic according to on-line info. "Pure distilled water should be neutral with a pH of 7, but because it absorbs carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, it's actually slightly acidic with a pH of 5.8." From your pictures above, the grayish blue solution is alkaline with pH 7.5. My pH 7.7 clay is a bit bluer (tested by Earth Corp. soil testing company). Black, gray, or clear solution is neutral pH .. means it's a fantastic buffer (good for plants). I tested COMPOSTED grass clippings and it's clear water above black solution. Buffer is great to neutralize the acidity of rain. Clay buffers better than sand/loamy soil, but the best buffer is composted organic matter. Coffee is also a buffer (at first pinkish, but after 20 min., it's a clear solution). COMPOSTED plant-matter is very alkaline and neutralizes acidic rain well. COMPOSTED leaves decompose to alkaline pH, when I stuffed a bunch of leaves in LOAMY & fluffy soil .. the next year that got converted into HARD CLAY, very alkaline. Green grass clippings stay fluffy longer (more nitrogen & more acidic). Brown leaves are considered "carbon" in a compost pile, and decompose to alkaline pH & hard like clay. My tap-water in red-cabbage is VERY BLUE, it's at pH 9 as stated on village's website. I also tested baking soda and it's more blue than my tap-water. I tested paver's sand or yellow coarse sand, and it's slightly alkaline. I tested composted manure and it's very alkaline (from the lime added to deodorize and kill weeds in the bag). The pH of composted manure is just as alkaline as my clay at pH 7.7. Your LAST pic. is slightly acidic. Rain-water is even more acidic & reddish purple. Rain water here is pH 4.5. I also tested some drops of vinegar and it's fuchsia red around pH 3. All my rooting-soil for cuttings are black or clear solution at neutral pH (they have lots of yellow sand or vermiculite mixed in). The clay taken from diseased & black spotted roses are slightly acidic, rather than blue like my pH 7.7 clay. I had tested 5 different roses with black spots in the past, and the soil taken from the root level is pinkish in red-cabbage juice. It's either acidic rain can't drain well from that spot, or else there's NOT enough buffer to neutralize the heavy rain going down.

Sleevendog, the wonderful thing about belated Birthday well-wishes is that they extend the happiness : ) And thank you both (Islay, too) for the Charcuterie Definition. I didn’t know the French pronunciation, but doubt I’ll use it here, or even the word charcuterie. Most here would think me pretentious, which is silly as I like to use words correctly. So, does this mean if I make canadian bacon or pastrami (from pork), I can (temporarily) call myself a Charcutier? LOL! Well, I just might anyway! Sleevendog, thank you also for mentioning the free-edge/live-edge board. That was my gift to myself : ) I think it’s so beautiful! I often toss together a board (the bread board above was from an old restaurant, the charcuterie with live edge from Etsy) of cheeses, crackers, meats, apples, grapes… whatever I have on hand, for pre-dinner snacking, or lunch nibbling. I wanted a larger, prettier board than the bread board : ) Funny thing is, when I bought my first furniture, the area in which I lived had tons of furniture with free-edging/live edging (horizontal slice tree trunks, vertical slabs). And they were cheap! And huge! I bought a large one for my coffee table on a major budget. New! After a while, the area was over-saturated with them, and I couldn’t give mine away when upgrading. Truth! So when they first came out, it took me a while to not see them as ‘cheap’ stuff! I have learned a new appreciation… everything old is new again : ) I think it looks both rustic and fine, simultaneously. I am a wood grain lover. And while I have your attention, those flageolet beans? Amazing. We can’t stop eating them on salads. I’m making some with leftover too-salty ribs, shredded, and roasted tomatoes next. Mercurygirl, you sound like me, I’ve moved several plants, including roses. Hard to keep up with where they are until they leaf out or bloom! Naturegirl, you are most welcome! Edie, I have one of those rolling pins! So heavy! I am sure you can roll it out thin enough. I would recommend a few things… if using crackers for cheeses, don’t add cheese to the cracker dough, just make them as is, and perhaps toss in some dried herbs (the flavor of dried herbs does come through) as appropriate. If serving with a soup, or alone, cheese tastes wonderful : ) Annie, don’t do what I did, though, and over prep/cook! I was feeling a bit frazzled by the time the day rolled around! But yes, making lots of nibbles satisfies everyone. And they can be easy ones. BTW, your hummus was wonderful! Thank you! I froze some, and hope that’s ok.

Oh Nancy,
You brought back memories.

Several years ago, when my mother was ill, I told her I would provide the meal for the whole family (about 20 of us). It was my gift to her. She insisted on having dinner at her house and that was the only I could keep her out of the kitchen.

Christmas morning we packed up the car. About 10 miles into the trip we had a flat tire. The coolers, Christmas gifts and kids had to stand forlornly alongside the road while the tire was being changed, then we went home to switch cars because it was one of those small temporary spare tires.

About 50 miles later the oil light went on in the car. Pulled over checked and the light went off and we were on our way again.

About 20 miles later I was talking to my husband and the lense of his glasses just popped out onto his lap while his hands were on the steering wheel. It was beginning to feel like an omen or something.

We were almost to our destination when a woman flagged us down because she had run out of gas. She needed a ride to her relatives.

We did make it to Moms and the meal turned out well but it got me to thinking. If we hadn't made it to our destination, what would everyone else have eaten for Christmas dinner? I had visions of them eating the wieners that spin on those racks at the convenience store because that is all that was open.

Nancy, I sure hope it goes better than it did for lvmadison, LOL.

I've cooked meals at Dad's and at my ex-SIL's home. Dad's house was bad enough, he cooked a little bit but stepmom did not cook at all and their kitchen was tiny. Her pans were usually in the oven dirty, so cooking there meant doing a couple of weeks' worth of dishes before I could start or use the oven.

The ex-SIL though, didn't cook at all. I tried to make gravy one year and she didn't have flour. OK, so she doesn't bake. She didn't have salt and pepper either, though, and I thought that was pretty extreme.

I always managed, though, and so will you. Happy Thanksgiving and good for you for doing it. No matter what happens, it'll be wonderful.

My "out-of-the-box" Thanksgivings often end up being my best. I just enjoy being with family anyway, I have no great attachment to Thanksgiving foods being a certain way. I mean, I would kinda want some salt and pepper on some of them, lol!

Thanks all! We went shopping today and I already have a OSL (Oh sh** list) going, but I think we have pretty much everything covered.
Got a call from BIL and his wife today. She said "I'll bring a pie"....Ummmmm, no offer of anything else. Oh well.
I hope she heard me say to bring a couple of bottles of wine! If not, we've got that covered also!
