Please vote on drapery fabric - pics

Hi all! First post for me in Home Dec, but I post in kitchens and appliances.

I am making drapes for my family room. I can't decide between the 'right' side of the fabric which is a rusty brown with gold vines or the 'wrong' side of the fabric which is gold with rusty brown vines. The wrong side of the fabric looks just like the right side with inversed colors. Please tell which of the two fabrics you prefer.

The drapes will be ring top, no pleats, just sweeping the floor. They will be lined. They are mostly decorative and cover a window that is bumped out. We only pull the drapes if the morning sum is making watching TV impossible. But the morning sun is so nice, so we hardly ever do this.

I will be getting a new rug for the french door and a new lamp for the table, but the rest of the furniture, carpet, wood floors, windows, etc stays.

Here are pics of the two colors and the room. I used ring clips to hang them. The colors didn't come across all that well - the two panels look totally different in my room, but the first pic shows the fabric colors best and the 2nd pic shows the wall paint color best:

And the last pic is old: the railing next to the table is gone, the walls have been painted gold, and this pic has the old curtains:

I like the light side the best! I have been admiring your home- so beautiful. And your pup!

I like the red for two reasons:

1. It pulls in your other reds, like the lamp.
2. I'm personally not a fan of curtains that blend into the wall, though a lot of people seem to like the look.

jlc LOVE the colors If you have occasional moisture, I would rec remedying the source before putting anything down - I know & have lived to regret it - 2 carpets & one expensive piece of high end Armstrong flooring later. The rolled flooring will trap the moisture underneath & grow mold - I pulled mine up and out several times w/water damage, cleaned w/bleach & put it back. It was such a beast to take up as it is so large & difficult to manage. 1st place to ck is gutters, downspouts, leaders all pitched away from house - landscaping/gardens should be pitched also for run off away from foundation - if its not those it could be a high water table, which can be remedied w/sump pump If you clean the floor really well with TSP (tri sodium phosphate) rinse, rinse, rinse - then you could put several coats of cement paint - and keep ckn'g on the moisture before committing to another type of flooring. I just put the peel/press tiles down on my utility side of my basement - did it myself & they are holding this pic is old & shows the nice armstrong flooring

I saw a lovely kitchen on the hgtv forums that had cabinets similar to yours. Their paint color was BM 'Toasted pecan'. I liked it so much I went and got the paint strip because I was thinking about it for my kitchen (only to find we're being relocated in a month or two). It looks awfully dark on the paint strip, so I was thinking about the one up from it, 'Tuscany'. I just held that strip beside SW Whole Wheat (don't have a Tobacco Road) and either one looks like a good complement. It's a reddish-brown, "terra cotta-like", very similar to another of my favorites, BM 'Audubon Russet'. It would look great too. Tracey

Taking your questions one at a time: Plain, simple panels would work fine in this room. Either rod placement would work. It's a matter of what you prefer. Question--when and how will you be using this room? If the panels are your only window covering, will you need them to block out sunlight at any point during the day? If so, you should consider covering all the glass. If you are planning on sitting in the room in the late afternoon, you don't want to be blinded by light coming through the transoms. Again, treating them all as one window would work. So would treating them as three separate windows with the panels stacking in between. Which look do you prefer? Stacking the panels in between the windows will give the wall a softer look, while pulling the panels open to either side will highlight the windows and the light. The need for shades or blinds depends on a couple of factors. First, how much privacy will you need? Second, will you be closing the panels to get privacy? Once you turn on the lights at night, it's pretty easy to see what's going on from outside. If you are going to use lined panels and close them every night, you don't need shades. If you would prefer to leave the panels where they are all the time, you would want to consider shades or blinds for privacy. Velvet would not be over the top, if the fabric is made into simple panels. It's not just about the fabric, but also about how the fabric is used. Velvet can look heavy, depending on the weight of the fabric and the color. But so can other fabrics. You can treat velvet casually or formally. About the rugs--usually I am in favor of two rugs for two seating areas. The rugs help define the space. But given the floorplan as you have it in the drawing, that would create a line of plain flooring extending from the doorway to the windows. I agree that would cut the room in half. If you are going to keep that floorplan, I'd say one large rug would work better. The alternative would be to create one seating area by the windows, anchored with a smaller rug, and a larger rug anchoring a seating area by the entrance to the room.

I prefer headboards made of wood because fabric is harder to keep clean especially a light colored one. Over time, if you lean your head against a fabric headboard your hair could leave "body oils" behind. Have you ever watched a decorating show where they're doing a room makeover and when they move the bed away from the white wall (where there was no headboard) you see a stripe of dirt that runs across the width of the bed. It's disgusting, and for that reason I would shy away from anything made of fabric. Not even leather but at least with that you can condition. It doesn't look like #4 goes with the style of the armoire. Is the armoire a Mission style? The doors appear to be but the legs I'm not so sure of. Bed frame #4 has red undertones to the wood, what you often see with the British Colonial style/Bombay Company style. Is that how you want to decorate the room? Your bedroom is gorgeous without even a stick of furniture in it! Because you painted it before you bought your furniture now you're going to have to be more careful about the wood tones you place in the room. Color has undertones to it, paint color can have yellow undertone to it, or an orange, or green or pink,etc. Just because it's a neutral beige doesn't mean it goes with everything. You can tell by looking at the paint chip on the fan deck, if the colors next to it are trending towards the yellows then you know your color has a yellow undertone to it. If you chose a bed with a red undertone it may not look right in the room if the undertones of the paint on the wall tend towards the yellows, as if appears yours does. Even though it's very subtle you should always consider it when chosing paint colors because your eye will pick up that something isn't quite right even if it isn't glaringly obvious.

I vote for the red ones too. Your room is very pretty. I love your beagle- I have one! Aren't they great?

I like the darker ones. I think it looks best with the wall color and coordinates well with the wood molding and the other rich colors in your furniture.

Both are nice although the lighter and brighter one is my favorite. Could you make them reversible for changing out with the seasons?

I like both, but in the view with your dog on the rug, the lighter really brightens up the area where they hang. Seems like the darker version would create a huge dark space on those days you do pull them.

The darker, it offers more contrast and brings out the other colors in the room better. The lighter ones seem to disappear into the wall.

Thanks everyone for your votes, your help and your compliments - so sweet!

I'd be happy with either fabric, but I think that I'm going to go with the darker brown, which is what I was planning when I bought the fabric. That's also the consensus among you voters. I think it makes the window area more of a focal point for the room, and this area is really the prettiest part of the room.

olychick: thank you for pointing the dark corner - I hadn't thought of that. I'm still going to go with the darker color - I hope I'm not disappointed!

alicate: I also wondered about making them reversible, but I have no idea how I would do that. I need to line them since the sun shines through them some (but they aren't sheer). If anyone has ideas on how to make them reversible, that would be ideal!

The beagle is named Sherman. He's such a fun dog - my two teen boys just love him.

Thanks again everyone! I'm excited to finish sewing the drapes and get them hung.

Love the fabrics, would also choose the darker color. Wonderful room! Are there more pictures of the rest of the house somewhere?

My vote is for the darker one. Maybe it's my monitor, but the lighter base color seems not to go well with your wall color. The darker one looks good with both the wall color and the trim.

I think the darker ones work better with the wall color - the light ones seem a bit on the taupe side for your wall color. Additionally, I think the darker drapery with the lighter pattern are a nice transition between the lighter walls and all the darker trim in the room.

I am glad to hear that you rarely close off those windows and the bumpout, tho. That would be my favorite place in the room!
