No offense taken here PBob, I was just was not sure you knew about the Petersen Papaws still being under patent, and that asking for scion wood from them probably not result in any offers as I think most here will respect those patents. I think many of us are frustrated in obtaining the Peterson Cultivars. I have eaten a lot of native Pawpaw, but no grafted ones yet, as mine have a few years to go, and I havenÂt had the greatest luck keeping them alive either. I have better luck with your namesake persimmons, I saw your post about scion for them as well and in a couple years I should be able to share scion wood of them with you. I have couple that would be available now, and replied as such in that post, but they are pretty common cultivars, if my plans workout this year I should pretty much double my cultivars from the current 8. I need something to eat while I wait on my PawPaws and my Magness pears that Lucky just burst my bubble on. I was thinking maybe 7 years, but 15 years, maybe I will pull them out now before they get too big. Emailing Nolin River and ask to be placed on the PawPaw waiting list seems to be the only path for PetersenÂs cutlivars. The other place that is listed for propagating them is Forrest Keeling Nursery, but has anybody been successful purchasing from them? I was not, I know they are wholesale, but who do they sell to? Maybe someone is establishing a commercial orchard and purchases all they have available. Basically Forrest Keeling told me they had them, but would not sell me any.

Spray as close to harvest as the label on the fungicide allows you. Yes, spray the summer sprays starting in July and spray through August, maybe even into September depending on the weather. I try to spray every 21 days or so. One inch of rain, cut the time in half, two inches of rain, respray. I usually do my last PC spray by the middle of July and then summer sprays from then on, as many as needed based on the weather. Commercial instructions will probably tell you to spray every 10-14 days, we don't need every fruit perfect for home use. I store my best keeping apples for winter use and the ones least perfect or not good keepers I use first. Keep in mind many sources on the internet are advising commerical production of fruit. I managed to have home grown apples year round. My winesap, granny smiths, stayman, and Arkansas Black from last year lasted until my McIntosh came in this year. I just started eating the Macs a few days ago. My goldrush hasn't started producing yet but I look forward to adding that one to my winter collection. As a side note, I was at our local farmer's market over the weekend just looking around when I saw the appleman. He had Granny Smiths that he "just picked", here in zone 7 (Virginia)I usually pick mine very late October or early November. I try to pick them just before a killing frost, which seems to get later every year. From experience I expect it would take a rather heavy frost to damage the Granny Smith apple. I have missed ones on the tree and found them in late November and they were good.

yeah our woods has some really really swampy areas too, the county drained all the neighboring land onto our property, bless their little pointed heads. However, we have been working on establishing a drainage system to keep the land from flooding, we have a swamp and overflow pond, and then a drainage ditch to another overflow pond to another drainage ditch that runs about 800' farther through our woods, mostly swamp in that area and then on to a creek on the neighboring property to the river. we haven't established the drainage areas IN the woods and swamp area..some of it should be made into ponds so as to keep the rest of the woods from flooding, but swamps also purify the water so they are necessary..and lots of wildlife live in them in the winter, esp the whitetail deer and bear..so we don't want to get rid of all the swampy areas.. yeah if Joel hadn't been with me i likely would have quit after a few fall downs in water..but he was there to urge me to finish up..later that week i did roll off the remaining wire and it appears that we must have gotten just about to the end of our property line marking it..so that is good, (however just past where we ended were some beautiful maple trees that i hate to think might get cut down if they AREN'T on our property. Meldy we had a pulp co steal a bunch of full size maples and oaks back there about 20 years ago..when my FIL had them pulp off his property, they were supposed to only take enough of the aspens to get through our properpty to his and they cleared nearly the entire forest..we were so sad..they gave us a few hundred bucks..like that helps..we haven't been able to use the woods since..

Hopsalot, Thank you for the information, will check those sites out just in case the deal I worked out falls through. Yes the Kiowa are sweet but not as sweet as I think they should or could be. I grow a LOT of fruiting plants and some plants like the blackberries are not in the perfect spot but do get about 5 hours of sun. If they got 8 hours they would be even better I am sure. I tore out the old plants and gave them to Floralcity Lou. Of course a lot of suckers keep popping up from the root fragments but because the Kiowa are thorny and the others are not it is easy to pull them out as they pop up. The original soil was just sand and it was mulched heavily 4 feet wide and 12" thick with woodchips. I re-mulch it every year and by now the soil is pretty decent.
