His giclee prints have increased in his studio. But I find it very hard to believe that peoplea re going to continue paying an escalating price for an open edition of a print. People like Gordon and Arvid and Kincaid and Moss and Reese and a host of others are making their money by selling "artist approved, and signed and numbered" prints. They are taking their art and making it into a "collectable"...and unless the merit as art is there and holds out, 20 years from now someone will be posting on a board like this and asking "Does anyone recognize this picture?". They are creating a market by making a limited edition. I would much rather have a fine quality Andrew Wyeth print, even though they are contuing to be sold. Linda C

Hire an expert and make sure you own your domain. Go buy it on Go Daddy or something - just make sure you own it. I've tried several avenues for a blog over the years. Blogger, Go Daddy, Typepad and a few others I can't remember right now. Currently using WordPress. It is not user friendly to get set up unless you choose to use a template. And there are some decent looking templates out there so that IS an option. Custom WordPress blogs/themes will cost ya. If you're lucky somewhere between $500-$1000 could easily run you more than that depending on how 'custom' you want to get and/or the size of the online store. Once you get someone to set up the theme or skin of your blog on WordPress, then it really is easy to maintain and add posts. Windows Live Writer with WordPress is, IMO, the easiest way to compose posts. Just think very carefully about everything you want and must have and make sure you get it all 'built-in' right off the bat. WordPress has many, many plug-ins. You need to get with a WP designer and decide on which 'store' plug-in will work best. WordPress is probably enough for you -- definitely find an expert and talk it over. You can only get so far trying to do it ALL yourself. If you think you need something bigger and more robust than what WordPress has to offer, there is also the option of Joomla and VirtureMart. I've had online stores, blogs, and websites for several years and have tried various hosts and blah, blah, blah. Ended up with website and store on Joomla and my blog is all WordPress -- essentially two separate websites that are linked together so it looks like it's all one. I'm not a complete novice when it comes to this stuff, and honestly it has been challenging for me. A lot of time, a lot of work, big learning curves. Coulda saved myself a lot of grief if I would have just gone ahead and paid someone to do it. i.e. I'm spending this weekend reformatting past blog posts because a new version of the blog went live on Friday. It's at times like this that I question my choice to try to save money and do it all myself. If I could do it over, I think I would choose to invest whatever it cost. If I would have chosen to hire someone, maybe -right now- I'd just be worrying about new items for the store or the next blog post instead of all this admin type crap. All I can say is good luck, talk to a lot of people, and do your homework thoroughly.

I third etsy or your local outdoor art fair or gallery walk. If you do want a print/giclee, you might search Gallery Direct (or similar shops) to find the print. I wanted a specific type of art poster and I found it there. I prefer original works, but many of my originals are original prints and lithographs. A fine antique print can be very valuable and expensive (a Besler botanical can run anywhere from $2500-10,000 depending on rarity - unframed!), or can be quite affordable (Curtis botanicals and Cassell's poultry prints). Original prints are very good value compared to oils and watercolors. But I have some of those, too - some by local artists on the Vineyard. I've only bought a reproduction prints once and it was with great reluctance. My late husband had seen an oil painting by well known coastal artist, Ray Ellis. It was gorgeous - had the Edgartown Yacht Club in it as well as the light house. It was $40,000 so that was NOT going to be ours. A year later, a limited edition of signed giclee version became available - it was $750 unframed. My husband (a total non-materialist) wanted this print. He was dying and we ordered it. It came in several months later and went to be framed immediately. A few weeks later, he was in the hospital dying. Called the frame shop, they did a rush order and a friend picked it up and amazingly, hospital maintenance hung it at 5PM on a Friday! He died on Sunday night, but loved looking at his picture and all the memories it held for him. I had it over the bed in our bedroom for a few years but I just never really liked the fact that it was a giclee - it just looked very fake. I gave it to my son and he has it in his apt over his sofa - looks great there. I replaced it with an antique oil painting of a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel that had belonged to the grand dame of the Cavalier Club - her family did not want it and I got it for a song. It looks much better than the giclee print. Collecting art is something that takes a lifetime. A local antique print dealer once told me that one need NEVER apologize for a blank wall - the right art will finally appear and one will buy it. In the meantime, no cheap "place holders". She was right and still is right.
