How shall I frame/display these botanical prints plus other art?
Comments (36)Hi, Val, just thought I'd show you the botanicals I've framed, just to give you more ideas, but it sounds like you have it almost all figured out. I have enjoyed watching your room come alive! I got all my botanicals off Ebay too & decided to do ready-made frames and had custom mats cut to make the prints fit in my frames. I used 16x20 frames with inserts of 10x13 openings. My botanicals are slightly smaller than the insert, so to fill it out, I used black mats on all of mine & I love how it makes them look more important. That touch of black all around really makes the botanicals stand out, I think. Whether this is proper placement or not, I have no idea, but it worked for my eye. I have framed several sets of these in this same way & will show you all the pics of how I've used the black mat exactly the same way. These were standard black frames from Michaels & came with the ivory mats inside with the glass & these had a black border built in on the inner ivory mat already, I just added another custom black mat to fill in the space that I needed to fill to fit my botanical. I know you can't see all the details on these pics, but hopefully this will help you some: This one is open frames from Hobby Lobby & I bought standard mats & again added the custom black inner mat so the botanicals would fit. HL does a great job with adding mats & glass & very reasonable. These gold frames came from Tuesday AM & they had the ivory mats with gold edge already in them, along with the glass. Comments (10)Our preference is to choose mats and frames that, ideally, will complement each piece individually. Unless we had a series or some closely related pieces, it wouldn't occur to us to consciously go for the kind of cohesive look you describe. However, to the extent that our taste iteself is cohesive, many framing jobs work well with each other, and many pieces are done in similar kinds of mats/frames. Many of our frames are brown woods or gold. Most photographs are in black frames. I don't care much for silver, and the only silver frames we have are on an oil that had already been framed that way in the gallery and some photographs, also already framed. What I can see in this room, which has mostly contemporary pieces with a modernist look....(1) Colored pencil piece done on a brown paper; mat is a tannish color; frame is brown wood. (2) Ink and watercolor (blacks and greys) on ivory paper; double mat - wide outer one in a very light brown and thin inner one in black, and white edge on outer mat shows; ornate antiquey gold frame; (3) and (4) two modernist prints, black on ivory paper; mats are a slightly darker ivory; frames are black wood, very simple; (5) oil on board, much chocolate brown in it; frame is dark brown with a thin gold strip. If I look into the next room....oh never mind. There are 16 pieces of art there! However, four of the 16 are 15th c. manuscript leaves, done on parchment, and all four are matted and framed identically (ivory mats and ornate gold frames). Comments (18)The wall color is SW Ramie. The chair was my grandmothers, and it is just sort of a placeholder right now. I have been searching for new chairs. I would really like to get 2 chairs, but I am unsure how to arrange everything. I would also like to get a new rug--I've been coveting a real hand-knotted forever. The current rug is very nice, 100% wool Couristan machine woven. It is in the same line as My3dog's lovely living room rug. They have been selling this line of rugs in the last year at Tuesday morning for less than half price. It doesn't come off quite as pale in person. I want to eventually move it into my bedroom, where it will be perfect. Does anyone have recommendations for a rug? What color scheme? I really like some of the orientals that are a bit more modern without a really tight or busy pattern. Something maybe like this: This rug is from Williams Sonoma home, and is way out of my price range at over $2K. Is it possible to get a hand-knotted for around $1K? Comments (57)I have thoroughly enjoyed browsing all the photos and reading the stories of your collections here. Such beautiful pieces and wonderful, touching stories. To see most of mine, you'd think my home was full of antiques, which is far from the real deal, but these seem to be most of my most interesting non-art things. However, some of you have given me some ideas for things I could do in the future with things I have stored! This is a small collection of silver vases, albeit in need of some polish right now. My collection of miniature tea sets. This started with my aunt giving me her much-used Mickey Mouse set she had used back in the 30's as a child and a then-new set when I was about 8-years old (the blue and white delft set). The rest is a mix of old and new I picked up along the way as an adult. I also have a lot of old hankies that belonged to my grandmother and great-grandmother, and yes I use them at weddings and funerals. They made some of them, including the tatting on the edges. Gallery hallway of family photos (old and new) To honor our home states (Alabama and Ohio) I started looking for old maps of our states and regions. This is one of Alabama and of the Eastern US in our breakfast room. The next one is an Agricultural map of Ohio. I think I've posted enough. Thanks for viewing. BTW, those clocks are awesome! 5 years agolast modified: 5 years agoWanted to share the last two, all framed up. (Pardon the glare. ) The little girl is 16 x 20 overall and Sir Pip 11 x 14. The enlargements were done by Nations Photo Lab, and they did an outstanding job. I'm pleased with this project and looking forward to the show!

(Some of the photo below altered to blur personal details.) Mostly just wanted to show off that pretty blue ribbon. I feel like the dad in A Christmas Story: It's a major award! ;-)
