Very nice shot! I like those photos with the dark in the background.

Show us a pic of the hibiscus flower after it opens, I'm curious to see what it looks like.

Hi Ed :-) Thanks for your response! I understand how diverse Hib R.S.'s offspring can be. I think that's why I'm drawn to growing out various crosses instead of buying named plants. It's exciting to imagine what they might look like and I'm looking forward (many months forward!) to witnessing their first blooms. I would love to hybridize my own. Maybe someday! But, currently, I have only two young plants: Purple Magic & Black Dragon. And I live in Maine with no greenhouse. Such a short season up here! I'd be very lucky to get a pod to maturity. I was just wondering if any others that purchase seed find so many that are not viable. Is it the norm? Here is my Black Dragon. I haven't had a bloom on the Purple Magic yet.

It's a Hibiscus rosa-sinensis 'El Capitolio' the salmon variety, which is a sport of the original red El Capitolio. It's also known as a Poodle hibiscus. What is a sport? (In case you don't know) The Gardenweb glossary defines it as "An abrupt, naturally occurring genetic change resulting in a branch that differs in appearance from the rest of the plant, or, a plant derived by propagation from such a genetically changed branch." Basically, a branch with salmon colored flowers showed up on a red blooming El Capitolio plant. Someone took cuttings of that branch and there it is - salmon colored El Capitolio hibiscus plants! Nice find at a WalMart! I have both the red and the salmon. Love 'em. Barb

Re Lowe's - I had an interesting talk one day with the garden manager at my Lowe's. She explained that each Lowe's allows their managers to decide which plants to buy and what to put on discount. In addition, Lowe's buys the plants outright as opposed to HD which only pays the growers for the plants that sell in the store.. This explains why usually only the newest plants at HD look good, as they have no incentive to care for them - they just return them - seems odd, but I guess if you're a big box store, you can get what you want. This is why, if I'm going to buy at a chain, it will be Lowe's because they do have the incentive to care for what they've bought. Does this make sense? Anyhow, probably more than you wanted to know! lol Hester

Hi Enna, Well, you didn't get an immediate response, so I guess I will "jump in". I don't grow Hibiscus, but I do grow and breed zinnias as a hobby, and I see several tricotyledonous zinnia seedlings every year. There are several outcomes. Usually a normal main stem will arise from the three cotyledon start, so those are apparently irrelevant. Occasionally there will be several nodes on the main stem with three leaves per node and three side branches arising from those nodes. The side branches are usually on a plan-of-two, but occasionally even some of the side branches will exhibit the plan-of-three. I think the plants on a plan-of-three look better than normal zinnia plants on a plan-of-two. It's not just that they have 50% more branches, but the triangle geometry looks "cooler' and more artistic. For that reason, and just because they are so "different", such plants are a breeding goal of mine. I refer to them as "threesies" and abbreviate that as "3Z" in my notes. If you find any tricotyledonous seedlings, I think it might be worth your while to grow them and even treat them as potential "breeders". The objective is to have the plan-of-three continue up the main stalk of the plant. ZM

Both pictures are really nice. I love the dark leaves and then the eye pop with the bud..........and the open flower picture really shows every detail. Very nice. Now I have to start learning to use my camera so I can maybe some day take great pictures..........although this is a picture I took to capture the water drops on one of my daylilies....I think it turned out okay........

linda..your shot is great..I'm still learning as well..I'm a jack of all trades, master of nothing....at least with digital, you can take 300 pics at a time, for nothing more than your time and a little battery use....so click away!!!

What camera are you using?

epaoshaguy, I am not using a fancy camera, just a Canon Power Shot SX100 IS. I still don't understand all the settings and get confused trying to read the manual cause ya have to keep flippin' back and forth between different pages, maybe I am just gettin' too old! LOL!!
Hmmm, wonder if there is a dummy book to teach me how to use it? LOL

Hi linda...I have a Nikon D40x with an 18x55 lens and 55x200 zoom lens. The 200 is a fairly slow lens, so I have to bump the iso setting in lower light, resulting in a grainer picture...at any rate its a far better camera than I'm able to utilize....but I'm still learning. I have no doubt that a course on basic photography, use of light and such would make a huge difference...until then, I'll just keep shooting and playing around....
