Sounds like you're having one of my moments. I could use my scale all the time but I forget about it except for certain things.

A pint's a pound the world around. Is it the same for brown sugar?

LOL momj47, coincidentally, for brown sugar, it does happen to hold true.

Easy one, about 3 1/2 cups of brown sugar to a pound.

I guess it is a matter of how hard you pack it. My Salter conversion chart says 8oz per cup, Cooks Illustrated says 7.... but unless I'm doing my math wrong 3.5 cups to a pound would come to about 4.5 ounces a cup, which seems way off from either of my sources.

Linda, you probably know the answer by now. But it is actually 2 1/4 cups of brown sugar per pound. Not 3 1/2 cups.

You are right, Ann, guess I hit the wrong key and didn't proofread!

Well doing a search on the web I've found that 7 oz per cup (or 2.25 cups per pound) to be a common answer, but answers range from 6 to 8 oz. Again, I guess it's a matter of how hard you pack. Me, I can't help but think it's neater and more globally accurate just to weigh. Why can't America get with the program? Weigh. Metric. LOL!

I just put the bowl on the scale, zeroed it out....and dumped in the brown sugar until it weighed a pound! I have no idea how many cups it was!
I often buy brown sugar by the pound, so no need to measure, just dump in the box...but this was a 2 pound bag that had some used out of it.

I'm another who always heard from Grandma that "a pint's a pound, the world around". Now I've found that it depends on what you're measuring, but 2 cups is pretty darned close, if you don't have a scale and your recipe isn't such that you need an exact amount.
