Kate, Tessa and others! Mais non! You must check out the California Garden and Landscape History Society at their website which is cglhs.org. They have an interesting newsletter and a fabulous annual meeting with tours of historic gardens, some public, some private that most of us would never get in otherwise. Join! I live on the opposite coast but am a member, just for the publications. No doubt I'll get out there for some of those meetings, as I have been attending the wonderful meetings of the Southern Garden History Society each year. Last year Atlanta, this year New Orleans. Back to California. I hope you get Pacific Horticulture magazine which often has articles about California garden history, and blurbs about garden tours. And check out THE book about California garden history, which does indeed go back centuries, "California Gardens: Creating a New Eden", by David Streatfield. He is the most important scholar in this area and the book is beautiful, as well as informative and RELIABLE. Sorry for the emphasis. A sore spot with me. Another excellent book, heavy on fabulous photos, light on text, is "The Gardens of California, Four Centuries of Design from Mission to Modern", by Nancy Goslee Power. California is oozing with garden history. You just have to plug yourself into the network to hear about local tours. As an afterthought, who is going to see this info on a Virginia thread??

@ worthy Thanks for your insights. We discussed the possibility of adding transoms above the bedroom doorways to bring more light into the hallway. The concern was the expense of adding more height to the second floor. A solar tube (not visible from the street) might be a cheaper option, although I always worry about roof leaks. I have mixed feelings regarding a basement laundry. I like the separation from the living spaces to minimize noise and potential water damage. However, I agree that bringing laundry up and down flights of stairs can be annoying (this is our current situation). At our next meeting with the architect we will reopen the discussion of laundry room placement with the options of: 1) keeping it in the basement; 2) moving the guest bedroom to the basement to make space for a laundry room on the second floor; and 3) using the suggestion of @MrsPete to install a dumbwaiter. Regarding the house footprint, we have tried to be as efficient as possible with the space available. With a narrow city lot (80') in the historic district (zoning requires two story) the house footprint is constrained. We also really enjoy the backyard for gardening and kids play and do not want the house to swallow the entire lot. Overall, I think we have achieved a good balance of a nice size home (3,000 sq. ft.) with most of the features we desire, that also blends into the existing historic neighborhood (the newest house on the block is 100+ years old).

Alisande, I know what you mean about abandoned buildings. It seems like such a waste to let them go. When I lived in New Mexico I'd explore ghost towns. There were many up in the mountains. Often associated with a mine that petered out. Here's a pic of what is left of Lake Valley. The name is as appropriate as Greenland! Or sometimes I'd happen across an old homestead that didn't work out. Ron

This year I hope to make some progress on the basement. I am waiting for the quote from the contractor regarding my bathroom. I think I'll email/call him today. That will be done by summer. I took out one of the fluorescent fixtures in the basement and the stupid junction box is on a joist perpendicular to the floor, so no way can I install a new fixture. I'm not moving a junction box! A guy at work can though, so I need to clean up down there a bit and I'll get him to come over and move it. There are two more down there, so I assume those are the same. I am just putting in inexpensive track lights from Ikea until we can get things going down there. For the immediate future, I need to get the basketball hoop set up so another guy from work can help me put that up. I need to replace the one we have, because it's broken, and this one we will mount higher. Yard work is never ending of course, but the weather has been less than pleasant for that on my days off. Days I work are beautiful of course. I'm still training for my 15k in Toronto in 3 weeks. Yikes! I think I'll be ready. I have no grand illusions of finishing in a great time. I just want to have fun. :)

Wow, these are great! I want to see more of that Old Burying Ground. And it would be nice if the Mt. Vernon gardeners could stop by here to do a little landscaping.

alisande, I like your idea of famous and not so famous. My original title for this thread was going to be Classic (and not so classic) views of Historic Places...but I didn't have enough room. :)

Here are some more photos of the Old Burying Ground in Beaufort.

Girl in the Rum Barrel. She died at sea returning from England, but her father had promised her mother he would bring her back home. He did, inside a rum barrel. It's an odd juxtaposition to see this old marker with McDonald's happy meal toys. :)

Thanks, Pam! I've never been to Beaufort, but for some reason (another life, perhaps?) I've always been strongly attracted to it.

I'm a volunteer gravestone photographer for FindAGrave.com and RAOGK.org--the latter standing for Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness. I took a lot of assignments last year, but this year I'm back to work for pay so I haven't had as much free time to wander around cemeteries. Your pictures are giving me a push, though.

Hi alisande,
I am drawn to these old graveyards, too. Charleston SC's Bonaventure Cemetery is beautiful as well, if you ever get there. The stories they have to tell!

I have seen FindAGrave.com and will check out RAOGK.org. I am a rank amateur family genealogist and these projects interest me. I love the idea of uniting families with old photographs, gravesites, etc.

New to this forum, but just had to say how nice your photos are and add one of my own of my favorite place to go camping. This is on the Tombigbee River at St.Stephens Historical Park.

I've been sitting here all week thinking "well, I don't have any pics of my own of really historic places"... when in fact, I have pics of one of the most important historical places of ALL TIME! Texan, of course. The place Texas independence was won --- The San Jacinto Monument on the site where brave, scappy Texas volunteers in the Battle of San Jacinto routed and defeated the largest, best trained army in the Western Hemisphere at the time of Mexican dictator Santa Anna. "Don't Mess with Texas!!"
