Back when my kids were young, and they are now late 40s and early 50s, my husband and I had a rare weekend trip without them to a bowling tournament. We were in the hotel room and I was idly looking over my grocery receipt from the day before when I noticed an item was $7.77. This was before meat or anything would cost that much (and before you could tell what the item was) and I finally decided it was the 77 cent purchase of laundry detergent. For that moment, it really ruined my weekend, since that was a large sum to us with a young family. Fortunately, I went to the store on Monday and they also realized what had happened and I got a refund.

It was also the same weekend when someone maliciously pulled the fire alarm for the hotel in the middle of the night, so I remember it very well.

Yesterday morning at walmart market, they overcharged me for Jerry's Dr. Pepper. I asked them to re check, and sure enough I was over charged. Four twelve packs gave me back $4.95!

I do have a story...but not one of being overcharged. On a recent shopping trip to Meijers ( A Michigan based chain that is spreading down to other states), the cashier somehow hit a $5 vendor coupon button. It wouldn't clear off for her, so she called for help. That person couldn't do it without it taking 10 min or so, so he said he didn't have a problem with the discount. So I received $5 off, plus, I thought I heard (and read on the screen) $67, instead of $57, so I spent $10 less than I thought!

Went to the grocery store once a few years back and bought ingredients for stuffed peppers. Maybe 5 or 6 items at most, including 3 green peppers. The store was busy and I was tired and in a rush and though I thought the total was a bit high, I didn't question it till I got outside where it was quieter and I could think. Come to find out she'd charged me for 33 peppers instead of 3...And when I went right back inside with my bag (everything fit into just one grocery bag) not only did they not believe me, but they questioned the cashier several times to make sure I was telling the truth. Now...Don't you think I'd be a *little* obvious and don't you think it'd catch *someone's* attention if I had bought 33 green peppers? I don't even think they had 33 green peppers in the store, lol!

They eventually did refund my money, but they made me feel so low, as if I'D done something sneaky, that it was years before I ever went back to that grocery store.

And btw the stuffed peppers turned out great, lol :-)

Yes, Walmart is one to watch - I've been charged twice for the same item, many times.

Also, one of our grocery stores, Price Chopper, is famous for double-scanning. They once charged my DH twice for a $30 bottle of whiskey. I'm glad I knew how much the charge should have been, and looked at the receipt and saw how much he was charged. It was mixed in with about $200 worth of groceries, so unless I had been aware, they would have taken us for $30 + tax!

Both have been on the news in the last year - it's always a good idea to watch the prices as they ring up, then check your receipt when you get home. It might be a bit inconvenient, but when the amount reflects an overcharge, it's worth it.

In the drive through, I received too much change at a MacDonald's a few years ago. So I parked the car and went in to return the 12 cents or so. None of the employees could understand me. One manager reached into his pocket and offered me his personal change. Finally, as the lunch customers in the next line were watching this unfold, a few suggested that since none of them understood, that I just leave. I did. I think I left the change on the counter. I was wanting it to go into the drive through cash register for the end of the day tally.

Yes - one time I was charged the price for raspberries when I was actually buying rutabagas - one rutabaga should not cost $10, LOL. We both look startled, and she realized her mistake in the code immediately, and fixed it.

The worst experience I had was when I came home with the groceries, and realized that not only had the cashier given me the receipt and coupon strip, she also given me back my check. I felt awful, so I went back to the store immediately.

Well, she acted as if I'd stolen the check! She actually accused me of stealing. Sorry, no, she had stamped it with the "deposit only", so she HAD to have given it back. She tried to snatch it out of my hand. I wouldn't let her. I went directly to the manager and explained that I was just trying to return the check, and I was mightily ticked off that I was being accused of theft.

He was so ticked at the cashier's attitude that he refused to take the check. It was for about $155. I never saw that cashier again either.

i always-always check my receipts. I was at Joanne's Fabrics on day and in a hurry btu non the less I checked when it seemed like I overpaid on something. The person that refunded money said that the person entered the wrong number for an item. 14.95 to much.
I also watch walmart and target. I do not go to my car until I have checked right in front of what line I came out of. There are way to many people that can hurt you in public, or even sitting in your car. Also then I do not have to go back to the store if there is a mistake...

Well mine isn't a grocery store experience, nor was I overcharged, but I thought you'd all get a laugh out of my experience. About 20 years ago when I was working, I brought my paycheck to my bank for deposit and handed them my bank book to be updated. I was in a hurry so I didn't look at my bankbook right there, but glanced at it when I stopped for lunch 15 minutes later. Expecting to see a balance of just under $700.00, I just about choked on my tea when I saw they had somehow deposited $1,160,000 into my account! I went right back to the bank, and it was withdrawn from my account, but they still had to figure out where it rightfully belonged. It sure was wonderful feeling rich for 10 minutes!

One time when I was living in Regina SK, I went shopping at Safeway. I asked for parcel pickup and when I drove up to the pickup door, the young boy was putting groceries in a car in front of me. When he was done, I handed him my number tag and he went into get my groceries. He comes out and explains to me that he accidently put my groceries in the car ahead of me and their groceries were sitting there. Now, they only had 3 bags of groceries, I had just finished spending over $200.00 on groceries. So I gave the boy my receipt and he had two of the cashiers go and re-do my grocery shopping. Now my question is, if the couple ahead of me knew they only had 3 bags, why didn't they say anything when the boy was loading the groceries in the car???

I do the self checkout whenever I can. That way I can keep a close eye on what I'm paying.

I try to always check my receipt before leaving the store. If I can I get behind someone that has quite a few items to check and it will allow me to unload mine so I can watch the cashier ring up mine. I don't usually buy a big amount at a time, so I can do this. If not, I check my receipt before leaving the store.

One time years ago, my teen age girls were bickering and I wasn't paying attention and thought I was paying quite a bit more than expected but paid and got them and myself out to the car. When I got home I checked and was charged like $25 for a 4 roll pack of toilet paper.

Went back the next day and showed the cashier the mistake and the dimwit said 'well maybe it was the colored tissue' (This was before they quit making the colored TP and ones with designs) Told her no it wasn't colored and if it was no TP would cost that much. Finally after much debate got my money refunded. She didn't last long at that store nor at the next one she worked at.

I always check my receipt before I leave the store. There have been too many mistakes. The funniest was when I was charged something like $33 dollars for some string beans. I think they put in the wrong weight, maybe, huh?

Here in Michigan there is the "scanning law". Say an item is priced $5 and it scans for $6. If you pay for it, completing the transaction, then go to the service desk they will give you back the $1 overcharge and then the law states that they must then refund you 5 times the amount that you were overcharged, with a limit of $5 penalty to the store. So on that item you would get $6.
Plenty of times I've been overcharged and gone right back to the store with the item and my receipt!

I was charged for 2 sets of sheets this past xmas,and had only bought one set.I didn't notice until a few day later when i was getting the gift receipts ready to pkg with the gift.I called wal mart and spoke to a store mgr.He told me to bring the receipt with me the next time i was in.I di and they refunded my money.

Years ago at a grocery store they charged me 19.99 TWICE for 2 chickens.I kep thinking why is this bill so high,so checked everything before i put it in the car.When i saw the chickens i went back in and told them.At first they acted like they didn't believ me,so they went over everything,and again refunded my money.

I watch the prices ringing up like a hawk since about 15 yrs. ago. I had grocery store deli cheese priced at $2.28 ring up on the bar code at $22.80. Cashier took it off at my insistance. And it rang up that way again. And again. The manager was called and couldn't get it to scan correctly and was unable to override. GEEZ!

... and the result as far as your relationship with them was concerned?

I think that it might rattle their chain were you to do it now, telling them how often you used to shop at their store ...

... and how often you have, since that experience.

It seems to me that stores need to hear the results that their actions cause in their customers' choices of where to shop.

Yes, Wal-mart pharmacy. DH is on prevacid. We get sixty pills a month. Have insurance and also have a discount card from prevacid which makes the meds cost us $10. Last week went to get it and they gave us the discount but forgot or just didn't use insurance and told me i owed them $296.00. Didn't take me long to speak up, they looked it up and said, oh yeah we didn't use insurance. Goes to show you what a mark up on meds. The young man waiting on me told me it was a good thing i caught that. How would i not catch it.

Our water bill! I guess they've been overcharging us for awhile and we didn't realize it! Last 2 months we've owed them...NOTHING! Good deal for us !

Yesterday at Albertson's the popcorn salt rang up for more than the shelf tag said, so I got it for free!

I always have a tally in my head of how much my groceries are going to be, give or take a few dollars. I always review the store receipt when I get home. Just Sunday I was charged $4.82 X 2 for an item that was supposed to be 2 for $5.
Turned out the sale sign had been put there by mistake, but I did get my money back. All of it. Then I tried to explain that I owed them for 2 of the product at the price that was quoted on the sign - they couldn't seem to process that information, it was kind of funny. I finally spoke very slowly and the light came on.
Paid for 2 at the sale price and all was right with my world...lol.
In all honesty, I never used to check the receipts so religiously. But I've noticed Walmart is really bad, and Safeway is careless with coding sale prices into the computer.
Imagine how much money has been charged incorrectly since the advent of the scanning systems.
