Finally had Foie Gras, that Karen from France sent me!

Karen/Nookie sent it to me a while back, but just never had the opportunity to share that delicacy with someone until today.

Planning a wedding surprise, so friend came by to help, and I prepared brunch, sparkling apple cider, and for starters the foie gras with fig preserves on good heated wheat rolls that had been torn into bite size pieces.

Can say I have had my first! Delightful experience.

The only hard part was getting that dang tightly sealed lid open. That was a major undertaking :o)

Brian, Yeah, my first attempt didn't go so well either, but my second try was great! All I did was I filled one of those disposable ziploc and seal containers - I dont know if they are ziplock, but they are abut 6 in x6 in and i filled it with 50-60% perlite 50-40% peatmoss (for my second round right now, i substituted seed starting mix for the peatmoss) and I put it on top of a heat mat. (not a seed heating mat, but a generic heat pad that my family has been using for sore muscles) I have the heat mat on about medium. and I watered with a spray bottle. Some of them germinate in 2-3 days, but other take longer. I have them under a fluorescent light in my closet, but that's not as necessary as bottom heat. I just waited until they had their first set of true leaves and put them in their own containers. Does that help at all? Bottom heat/warm soil is KEY good luck - what school do you go to? Wendy, Thank you so much for your box. I recieved it as I was walking out the door heading for my long drive to DC. I hurried and opened it and wrote a note to Jason with directions for the plants. The plants looked great and I love everything else that you sent :) Wendy sent me 4 plants, one that I know is sedum, and maybe a vine looking plant, and the other two I am not sure of. - pot hanger decorations, I do not know the 'real' name of what they are. But they are really cute and will look good on some of the pots that I painted :) -lighthouse statues -little stand with a flag -scrapbooking paper -butterfly windchime... that was my favorite!! If I forgot anything, please remind me! Again, I was on my way out the door, and I am writing from memory. Thank you so much Wendy, I loved your gifts!

Karen sent it to me, after reading a post on froie gras, and watching Curtis Stone, the Australian hunk prepare it, and my saying I had never had any.
She sent it to me, just cause! KT people are so special.

Sent me complete directions on getting it out of the jar, how to slice it, and what to eat with it, and drink as well.

Not the bestest looking, after you take it out of the jar, but it was delightful! Friend and I both enjoyed!

What is Foie Gras?

Foie gras (pronounced fwah grah) is the fattened liver of a waterfowl (either duck or goose, produced by a special feeding process. It results in a luxurious product that is at once velvety and meaty. Historically, foie gras has been cooked in a patÃ© or terrine and served cold. The last decade has seen the gain in US popularity of serving foie gras seared hot with a sweet and tangy fruit garnish.

I have tasted it a couple of times in fancy San Francisco restaurants. It is an artery clogger and has a million calories. After having one taste of it, I give the rest to my dining companion.

Glenda..You lucky duck! (pardon the pun) I am SO envious-I have always wanted to try it as well. I bet the fig preserves was great with it. Wonder how it would taste on grilled or toasted French bread? Think I'd prefer that to contrast the softness of the fois gras. So, once you opened the jar..did you have to use it up all at once? Just wondering what it's shelf life is, once opened. What a thoughtful gesture from Karen!

Fois gras is definately not something we eat every day. It's entirely too rich both for the hips and for the wallet lol. It's normally reserved for christmas and new years. My MIL makes it from scratch and it just melts in your mouth(provided that my FIL doesn't go overboard on the cognac that he adds to it lol)

I was a little nervous that the one I sent would be kinda' gross actually. I'm so used to my MIL's that I hadn't really bought any myslf in awhile. I did buy one for christmas (different brand and cheaper) just to have "whenever" and it was pretty gross. I was dissappointed and then I hoped that the one I sent wasn't the same.
I'm glad that it turned out ok and was good. Don't forget that it goes great on a salade with a vinagrette sauce! You can keep it for up to 2 weeks in the fridge after it's opened.

Karen, being as I never had it before, I really didn't know what to expect.

I liked it, really did!
Wasn't the prettiest looking food I have seen, but got the fat off it, and cut it in thin slices. The fig preserves were really great with it.
