In 1974 my husband built something similar in our previous home for our son, except down below was room for a kid's desk and chair. The problem was he didn't like to sleep up high as it was too hot!

check around on the net for loft bed plans...or if you're anywhere near a college w/dorms you could probably find plans...or a kid who wants to sell one...

Susan's suggestion about checking at a local college is great. When the students leave campus in the spring they leave a lot of good furniture behind. My son wanted to rent a truck and store all the good stuff in a storage unit for the summer and when college started again in the fall he would sell it to the incoming kids. The one he left behind his senior year only cost us $100. and was built very well.

Good idea to look for plans online or for one already made. I commute to WVU each day, I will see what I can find on the campus boards. It is a summer project for me so I will let all of you know what happens.

When I was in Univ. ... I could sleep in a bed at hip level ... or at head level.

Now, I prefer one at hip level. Though, being quite active, even agile, I could mount the higher one if necessary.

After a while ... I'd probably need a ramp - well, maybe a good ladder'd do, for a while, anyway.

I rather like the idea of picking through garbage (sorry, "picking up cast-off furniture") at school-leaving times, to store for the summer - we have a medium-sized Univ. 20 miles away ... and a community college (trade school) a bit farther away. There are some barns and sheds around here: all the storage space necessary, covered with a few tarps (we have birds, too).

Digital cameras being what they are, one could offer a catalogue online, come fall.

Landlord, the sod farmer, is planting minimal grass seed: plant building trucks that used to be called "Freightliner", more recently "Sterling", closing down in St. Thomas, city of 30,000, that he serves ... moving to Mexico ... and they're not bulding new houses, in St. Thomas, these days!

They used to build "Jaeger" concrete mixing trucks in St. Thomas, as well, about 20 years ago - shortly after a strike, weeds were growing in the plant yard: they're building the concrete mixers in Mexico, now.

What're our guys to do?

I had one of the loft beds for my nephew when he lived with us. The bunk was up high; at one end (facing out) was a built-in desk with drawers, bulletin/chalk board and such. The other end had a bank of clothes drawers. I made a curtain to enclose the under bed area (built to slide a second bunk into if wanted); he had a carpet, bean bag chair, reading lamp, etc. in there.

He loved it.

Our bedroom is so small here, I suggested to DH that we'd have a lot more space if we set up bunk beds in there.

He gave me the "my wife's lost her mind, again." look.

I think he was just aggrevated that I insisted on the bottom bunk so I could have a night stand and not have to climb up and down the little ladder.
