Beach, low angled light

Morning:

We were at Myrtle Beach on vacation last month and early one morning I shot these from our 8th floor balcony. The sun was low and subjects were back lit. I shot in color but changed to B&W. Treated like I was printing on high contrast film.

This was interesting

But I like this one better.

I should have stuck with the beach walkers longer than I did but got distracted by the reflections off the waves:

By the way. Kept the last wave in color and played with the contrast and shadow.

I like the second one better, too. I wish I could see it a little smaller; it more than fills my 22" monitor, and I'd a bit of a different perspective on it.

Interesting that the fisherman in pic #1 has his own personal wave rolling in front of him.

Very cool metallic look on the last wave pic.

Aglaonemas/Chinese evergreens do eventually have their lower leaves turn yellow and fall off. Most of the 6" pot size ones I use at work only last for a year or two, the 10" pots I can get maybe 2 or 3 years out of. It seems like the varieties with the big leaves that are bushy hold up longer. Eventually you can whack off the tops, root in water, and replant a bunch of tops together to make a nice new bushy plant. The lower leaves will turn a mushy yellow fast if you keep the soil wet all the time. They like to get dry on top before you water again. But if you let them get totally parched, the leaves will turn yellow too, but more of a dry, dusty yellow.

Thanks arthurm, I am sure you are right, and I think that is a bit too much bother for me too. I have fiddled with the position of this now and think it should be OK. It is my first aerangis, so I am perhaps giving it a bit too much thought. And it seems very happy right now, so I am hoping I can get it to bloom. It is something of a test for me: You have often advised people in this forum to grow what their conditions allow without too much difficulty. I am hoping that if this one does OK, I will be able to add some other aerangis/angs that could also be happy in my home. Cheers and bests, br

Thanks everyone for the suggestions so far! I'll definitely look into them. I saw a beautiful and large philodendron at a fancy grocery store last night with crimson stems and dark glossy leaves (not spilt) - will have to find out what it was. I agree about the sanseverias, I know they need at least some light for photosynthesis, just wasn't sure how much. I might try S. masoniana for fun if I can find an affordable source here. Woodnative, the problem is that most of the "bright indirect light" and morning sun spots are being hogged by the fiddle leaf fig, Hawaiian palm etc. The windows aren't huge either. I do have at least 8-10 hanging spots that I would call bright indirect light but I'm also looking for plants to put on the coffee table, dining table etc which are further from the windows (fern territory I think). I do have pretty dark corners but I know they will remain empty! Aruzinsky, I did think about grow lights of some kind - we already have a large tropical fish tank with two led panels for aquatic plants. They cost a fortune though, I'll have to look around and see if there are cheaper options here, or I could get them shipped I guess. Thanks again :)

I had the exact same thing in mine. we drywalled over it. looks so much better that way. this is an older pic, but where you see the recessed lighting, was exactly what you have now. if you can't do that, then yes,,look on Pinterest for redoing light florescent light boxes. bunch of different ideas. (but the best is to fill it in) this one is a lot of trim work and metal look tiles. you could also do beadboard, reclaimed wood, wood flooring pieces, etc you could make something like this to fit over it,,drill holes for lights

Love the lighting-super like the angled view of the 1st pic with the people doing their thing, seemingly obvlivous to each other, would prefer a little wider but that would be a personal preference-2nd one like he's taking timeout to enjoy the waves and view. The waves are lovely, I can hear them rolling to and fro. The b&w works well. A nice view from the balcony!!! And like Bigack-would love to go the beach, too!!!

Thanks for your comments. I also like #'s 2 and 4 the best. Number 2 is my absolute favorite of any that I took in that session. It is cropped from a much larger photo which you can see more of in shot #1 which is also cropped from the original. 10.1 MP gives you some room to play with when cropping.

By the way, the camera is a Cannon EOS Rebel XS with a 75 to 300 MM lens.

Susan, here is the beach sitter photo reduced in size but I'm afraid its quality isn't as good as the original crop.

Here is the original shot - reduced in size but it gives you an idea of where the cropping was done. I have variations in one form or another that have all figures represented but the Beach Sitter was by far the best.

While the b&w worked on pics 1 and 2 I think now that the waves probably present better in color. I'm going to go back and play with some of them again.

Thanks, but it's still huge. :-)

I clicked on the first posting, and it sent me to your Photobucket account, where I viewed the shot in a small size. Normally, I'd say too small, but it gave me the perspective I was looking for. I had no idea you did so much cropping of that scene. Good eye!!

Early morning or late day sun . . . there's nothing like it for great pictures.

Joan, Thanks. I was very happy with the photos I took that morning. I expect that to try to duplicate the conditions I'd have to stay in the same condo.
