Males can get UTI's also.

Grab a urine sample and take it to the vet. My vote is UTI as well.

Get the urine sample and run it over to your vet in advance of your appointment. It will save time as it can be analyzed right away. Your pet may be in some pain if he has an infection.

I wouldn't wait either. It may not be anything serious, but it could also be kidney disease or cycts in his bladder.
One of DIL's male dog had the same symptoms and he had cancer..........her other dog, same symptoms, had a huge cyst in his bladder.

Don't wait! Although males can get UTIs, my first worry would be cancer in an 8 year old Dobe, especially if he's neutered it could be prostatic cancer. Another possibility is pyelonephritis, which is a kidney infection. My 8 year old lab Max just lost a kidney due to this disease, but is doing well almost 10 months later. Do get the urinalysis done, but don't drop this, keep doing the recommended follow ups. Max suffered for a couple of months before diagnosed because he did have bacteria in his urine, and he was appropriately treated with antibiotics, but he kept getting infections. Eventually he had an ultrasound that looked odd, and he needed surgery to remove that kidney. Luckily it was just pyelonephritis and no cancer. Billy could also have a bladder stone and that may predispose him to a UTI but please do the follow ups! I can't stress this enough. It isn't that common for males to get a UTIs without something else predisposing it.

I went through this last week with my female, 14 month old, Shepard/Hound, only she couldn't hold it (she peed on the front seat of my car from vet excitement).

Urine test confirmed an infection. My advice is run, don't walk a sample to your vet.

Our almost 8 year old male dog had the same symptoms. It was urine crysals and large bladder stone. He had surgery - expensive- and so far is doing fine, escept for the fact that the incision broke open and he had to have more repair surgery. Don't wait, get it checked out.

My 10 year old Yorkie had blood in his urine and it turned out to be stones in his urethra, which required surgery ($$$) to remove. The vet sent the stones out to be analyzed and they turned out to be calcium something, so I had to keep the dog on a low calcium diet (expensive dog food from Science Diet, which he hated ,or Royal Canine, both only available at a vet, by prescription). I supplemented the low calcium food with rice, green beans, oatmeal, anything I could think of that wasn't high in calcium. I also gave him carrots (peeled baby carrots- prepackaged) for treats, and pieces of banana. Unfortunately, the stones came back two years later and he had to have surgery again. Good luck figuring out this problem and get that Dane to the vet ASAP!

Went to the vet. Billy has an enlarged prostate. He is 8 1/2 years old which is old for a dane. There is a growth pushing on the prostate and the colon. the vet wants to neuter him, which I feel is going to be quite traumatic for an old dog. Danes have a life span of 8 to 10 years, some make it longer but the quality of life suck from what I see. I am sure that they can have a good life older thatn 10 years but, I do not see the procedure as good for him. The vet seemed certain that neutering would solve the problem . My question which the vet didn't answer was can't they just remove the growth( syst or whatever it is). FYI this is not his regular vet, as we are 500 km from our regular vet. I will get results for his blood test and urine sample tomorow. My question is there anyone out there who has had this happen with large breed dogs, or any smaller breed? Any vets out there who could answer this would be appreciated. Billy has been with us for 5 years now and I do not want to see him suffernor do I want him to be traumetized.

I may very well be wrong, but it seems much less traumatic to remove something external and easily reached, than something internal that they'd have to slice him open to get to.

Prostatic hyperplasia is probably the best diagnosis you could get! Here's an odd case where it's better that he hasn't been already neutered, because when neutered dogs get prostatic disease it is usually cancer and usually pretty darn bad. Neutering him will cure the problem and it is pretty easy unless he is cryptorchid. It will still be surgery, not to make light of the situation, but if it makes you feel any better I adopted an 8 year old grossly obese Rottie last year after she was spayed by a 3rd year vet student- no complications. She was completely recovered 12 hours later, and spaying is MUCH worse than a neuter. Your guy will probably bounce back in no time! Removing the prostate is extremely difficult and is WAY invasive, especially compared to neutering. The hyperplasia is caused by testosterone, so if you remove the source of testosterone (ie the testicles) then the prostate will return to normal size. If your dog has other issues that are making his quality of life bad, than I can certainly see why you'd hesitate at neutering him. But if this is his only problem, neutering him will cure it he won't have other problems related to this any longer.

I had a collie that had a problem similar to what you are describing. The vet was gung ho on neutering. but in the mean time gave him what I belive was a steroid shot, this was when he was about 8 or so. after 2 shots he stopped peeing and driping a blody solution. he lived 3-4 years before sucumbing to a stroke
