help me choose a BLACK countertop..formica v. granite
Comments (13)"Is it stupid/unclassy to install brand new cabinets and put formica on top?" I don't think so, because we built a whole new house with a grand kitchen (IMO) and most of it has laminate (island has DIY wood, and we have stainless by the rangetop). I have always had excellent experiences with laminate and with all the other expenses for the house, realized that, for me, it wasn't necessary to spend that much money on counters. Granite has just never been one of my dreams or 'must have someday' things. As soon as I, basically, gave myself permission to be happy with laminate and not worry about whether it was right or classless to put it in a nice, new kitchen, I felt much more relaxed and content. Recently my sister sent me an ad for a good price on marble, which is kind of my dream surface, but when I thought about how I can drop stuff, slide my mixer, spill things, etc. on my laminate without giving it a second thought, I couldn't seriously think of changing it. Of course, marble would need to be babied more than I think black granite or soapstone would be, but I think you know what I mean. I don't think you really need to worry about either material you're considering, but you don't need to feel you 'have' to have stone, either. If it were me, I'd choose the soapstone, because like our stainless, some wear and patina is expected in the long run, so I wouldn't worry if it got a mark in it to get, perhaps, a head-start on the 'patina.' :-)...See MoreHorrible Mistake to use Formica 180fx Calacatta Marble?
Comments (65)@Brenda Hagel do you mind me asking what the cost of your countertop was? My kitchen looks like a similar size (maybe a bit bigger), and I love the look of the Calacutta Marble but am worried it will be considerably more expensive than a regular Formica laminate. Does anyone know the difference in cost between regular laminate and the 180fx series? Is the 180fx still a high pressure laminate? Thanks for your help. P.S. I am in Canada, so please specify if talking about USD or CAD, thanks!...See MoreSlate tile vs slate look porcelain tile?
Comments (26)We have a rustic slate bathroom which I love and am extremely happy with. That said many of the comments made here about it are legitimate thoughts to consider. The tiles are uneven, and if a tiler without a lot of experience laying slate does the job, you could have bumps in areas of the flooring that won't appeal to your feet. It can run cold, but that has not been an issue for us even in sub zero weather, it's just not something we care about. It's very hard and can be hard on one's legs if you're standing for a long period of time. The pro's are that it's very low maintenance though, seldom shows dirt and super easy to clean when it does which was important to me. I don't agree with Lakeeffect in that you don't have to get Vermont Slate. If you research it at all, you'll find there are lots of different types of slate that will work fine. We didn't get Vermont slate. I did however take the suggestion of a pro in the bathroom forum and soaked some tiles in a bucket of water for several days to see if they would break down. It didn't and it's done amazingly well in all areas including the shower. These are old pictures from our remodel just after the install and sealant. It's called Indian Autumn and the pictures don't really do it justice. We wanted everything we've upgraded with to be of natural materials and earthy, so we didn't go with a porcelain, but if it's not something you care about, I think that the Daltile would be a good alternative....See MoreIs GE’s “matte black” and “black slate” the same black?
Comments (19)I'm putting in matte black cupboards so I've really been looking to match them. GE's Black Slate is more Deep Matte Charcoal. But GE Cafe series black is the same as GE's matte black and even just "black." I was looking at a dishwasher in "black" and asked the chat person if it was flat black? Yes it is. Can get GE's Profile series in matte black still. I'm taking another in-person shopping whirl with a sample of my cupboards to be safe. Black can vary a LOT. Black stainless looks like metal, not as polished, but dark--very pretty. If I can't totally match the matte black to my cupboards, I'll go that direction....See Morephillyhaus
