Question for the Canadians

Allie's question on the other thread reminded me of something from when I was kid. We went on vacation and travelled from Maine into Canada and drove all over the place. I remember we visited the Gaspe Peninsula and areas all around there. There were women, or their kids, standing alongside their country driveways selling fresh homemade bread, hot out of the oven along with fresh butter. I remember it was cold and rainy and windy, and when we stopped (several times) and bought that hot bread it would steam up the windows of our car. My Mom would tear off chunks and hand them back to us kids, and that bread was the best bread I had ever tasted. We were strictly forbidden from ever having food in the car, and this is the only exception my Dad ever used to make.

We traveled all over the US and Canada when we were kids, as a family in a big old station wagon. I never remember this from anywhere else, except in that Eastern part of Canada. Do you know about these bread making women, and are they still doing this? This would have been back in the late 60s or early 70s.
