You can gently scrape around to locate the roots......or you can get your sturdiest garden fork and heave the whole clump out.....and as you would do well to locate yours to the sunniest possible place, I would be going for the mass digging method. Having exposed your roots, find nice plump ones, at least as thick as a pencil. Direction is important here - keep the plant the right way up and when cutting roots, make the bottom end slanted and the top cut flat across the diameter. of each root. You are looking to get 2inch roots which you place in gritty compost (free draining, but able to hold moisture so leafmould is good if you have any.....or just some nice garden compost if not). Put 5 or 6 roots vertically (in a 5inch pot)in the soil....as if you were planting, rather than laying on the top, and just cover the tops of the rootpieces, leaving an inch for watering. By next spring, these roots will grow vigorously, putting out new leaves. You can replant them when this happens - they will be in full-flower the following season. I love these opulent blooms....but they are fleeting, very elusive, over in a nanosecond, leaving enormous gaps in the border (although you can shear them to the ground and fresh growth will soon fill any gaps). Recently, a new group of poppies have been bred which repeat for another bloom cycle at the end of the summer (although mine don't but it might be because they are overshadowed by taller perennials by then. These so-called 'super poppies' are expensive - anyone else tried them? Do they repeat for you? Or is this another over-hyped nursery fad? I grow mine along the edge of a veggie bed with bearded iris - when all is over and done with, I cut the whole lot to the ground and basically ignore for the rest of the year while they bake in the sun.

Peony poppies are annuals and Oriental poppies are perennials. Oriental poppies do not like to be moved but I've done it many times and if they are kept watered they eventually quit sulking and return. They are prickly tho so it's easiest to plant where they will stay. If I were in your situation I'd plant the seeds directly in the garden somewhere there is a bit of space. Peony poppies are fairly distinctive when tiny, the leaves are frilly and a blue-green. I have some coming up in the weirdest places this year, nowhere near where they were last year. I haven't let the Orientals seed lately but I think the leaves are a bit prickly even when young. One thing I've done is cut gallon plastic bleach bottles in 2" rings, push into the soil in between plants a bit and plant in the ring. That way I know where the seeds are and only have to determine which are weeds within the ring.

Isn't she a sweetie! My three dogs were all adult 'rescue' dogs so I didn't go through the puppy stage with them. But I did keep them in individual kennels (at home) while I was working for the first few weeks. Then I restricted them to a couple of rooms using a pet gate (similar to what you'd use for a human toddler). I walked them before work, then came home for a late lunch and walked them again, then walked them after work and then once more at bedtime. Now I work full time from home and they spend most of the day in the office with me. They make great foot warmers in the winter :-) We still walk (no fenced in yard) three times a day. Before work (about 7 am), early to mid afternoon (2-4 pm), and before bed (any time from 7 to 10 pm). I think it would be very hard potty training a puppy when you can't stay home with him/her. A rule of thumb is that a puppy can handle one hour per month of age. So a 4 month old puppy should be able to go up to 4 hours without having to go out. A six month old puppy can go up to six hours, and so on. One thing I wouldn't recommend is using puppy pads in the house. I had a dog once, that was trained with puppy pads from the time she was tiny. It was an awful process re-training her, and she would still potty in the house years afterward, if the notion struck her.

My main purpose for this thread was for people to be aware of how to do the heimlich on their dog if need be Mrs TLC, I hear you, it just was when you posted the link of the story it totally over shadowed the other. Your post was the first I saw of this, of course it was all over the web which is a good thing as it definitely will not go unnoticed and it shouldn't. I for one felt mortified that a police officer, a public servant in the USA would conduct himself more like KGB. I can't tell you how upsetting I found this to be and still do. When I say my heart really goes out to these owners is an understatement. Anyway just so you know, the Heimlich maneuver is a good thing to know for all pet owners however many owners don't know the difference between difficulty breathing ( such as in Laryngeal paralysis) and choking.If your pet is not really choking, the Heimlich can cause serious injury.My advice is if you actually see the dog/cat eat something it shouldn't or tell tale signs there of than by all means do the procedure.
